C Plinii Secundi [Pliny the Elder]
Naturalis Historiae
Cologne: Eucharius Cervicornus, 1524 A rare copy of the 1524 edition of Pliny's work, which was first printed in 1469, but written in AD 77-79. This is the first edition by Johannes Caesarius (1468-1550) produced as a single folio volume. This copy has been rebound probably in the early 1800's and the binding is in extremely poor condition with both boards adrift and most of the leather from the spine absent. It is lacking the title page and dedication and the final page - page 311 has some loss. It is possible to see however from the colophon on the reverse that this work is the 1524 edition. There are some small worm holes which affect the initial pages of the index - these are holes rather than tracks so there is minimal impact on the text. There is a brown stain which first appears faintly in the gutter of p292 (about 2 cm in diameter) and which then becomes larger and darker but not really intrusive until the end of the work. The remaining pages have some browning and the occasional mark but are generally in good and clean condition. The woodcut headpieces and initial capitals are of high quality. This copy has been priced to take account of condition and is an opportunity to acquire a very rare work at a much reduced price.
