MERCURIALIS, Hieronymus.
De Compositione Medicamentorum Tractatus, tres libros complectens... Eiusdem de Oculorum, et Aurium affectibus praelectiones seorsim editae... Omnia primùm a Michaele Columbo...edita...
Francofurdi [Frankfurt]: apud Joannem Wechelum, 1591. Second edition. See G&M 3343 (first edition of 1590, the first work cited under otology and audiology). The treatise on the ear contained in the second part of this book represents the first "clinical" manual on diseases of the ear. It is combined with a treatise on the diseases of the eye, which is one of the earliest ophthalmological works written by a learned physician (as opposed to unlearned practitioners). The first part of the book is on pharmacology. Stevenson & Guthrie, History of Oto-laryngology, p. 29: "...one of the first exponents of the practice of otology." See Albert, Norton & Hurtes 1547 for the ophthalmological treatise.2 parts in 1 volume, 8vo, pp. (viii), 312; 192. Separate title-page to the second part, woodcut device on both title-pages. Modern vellum over boards, paper label on spine, red edges. Title-page to the second part slightly soiled, but a very good copy. Bookplate of Richard J. Bennett.
Bookseller: Nigel Phillips [United Kingdom]
