Vallée des tombeaux des Rois à Thèbes./ Thal der Königs-Gräber zu Theben.
[Cairo, ca. 1860]. Albumen print. 24 x 31.1 cm. Signed W. Hammerschmidt and numbered N 68 by the photographer in lower right corner in the negative, mounted to original card, printed title in German and French below the image on the mount. A professional photographer from Berlin, Hammerschmidt (active 1860-1870) was one of the first photographers to set up a studio in Egypt. In the 1860s he also ran a shop in Cairo where he sold his own work, photographic equipment and supplies for travelling photographers. His photographs are "of excellent quality in vision, composition, and execution. Judging by these images he can be considered one of the best resident photographers of Egypt" (Perez). "It seems probable that his standard set of larger format photographs were numbered roughly up to 100 and were made at the beginning of his stay in Cairo" (Jacobson). Slight foxing on the original card. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
