London: T. Becket & P. Elmsly, 1777. First Edition. Full-Leather. Good+. 3 vols. iii, lx, 656 [640]; ccviii, 495; iii, lxviii, 696 p. Vol. 3 has three plates and one fold-out inscription, all engraved by E. Malpas. Edges of boards worn, corners bumped. Vol. 1's front board is detached and spine ends chipped. Vols. 2 & 3 have tender front hinges with inside repairs. Minor dark mark on front board of vol. 3. Front pastedowns have bookplates from University of Aberdeen and some tiny ink notes. Endpapers have moderate foxing. Occasional thumbing within. Vol. 1 has ink inscription from 1780 across from title page and inscription at top of title page. Vol. 2 has worm holes in front endpapers extending to p. iii. Vol. 3 especially stained on pages 692-693. Selected pieces from the "Histoire et Memoires de l'Academie," a massive collection of French-language commentary and criticism on Greek and Latin classics. The printing of the "Histoire" began in 1717 and ran through 1809, with the total number of volumes coming to 51; this compilation offers some especially noteworthy treatises from the beginning of the series to 1763.
