Caspar Contareni
De Republica Venetorum Libri quinque.
Leyden Elzevier 1628 Second edition. 24mo (11,1 x 5,5 cm). 431, (1) pp. Contemporary overlapping full vellum, spine with handwritten title. Illustrated with an engraved title page depicting a bird's eye view of the town and harbour of Venice and 11 decorated 4-line woodcut initials. With the Privilege dated 15 may 1626. Contarenus [Gasparo Contarini, 1483-1542] was a Venetian diplomat and was made a cardinal in 1535, although still a layman. Although he idealized the reality of the Venetian politics, it still remains the most important source for the study of Venice's unique system of government during the 16th and 17th century. It was published for the first time in 1543 in Paris by Mich. Vascosan. This is the second, enlarged edition which contains 10 traits, that have most probably been compiled by Johannes de Laet. A very fine and remarkably fresh copy. For a full description and more images please visit: .
