JOYCE, James.
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
London: Egoist Press, 1916. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles in blind to upper board and to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a dark blue quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Some minor browning to endpapers but an exceptionally fresh copy in the restored dust jacket. The bulk of the restoration was to replace the lower 6 cm (2 1/2 inches) of the spine panel and to reassemble the remaining and original panels, the only facsimile work being the publisher's name at on the spine panel. Of the utmost rarity. We have seen just 3 examples of the UK issue of the first edition and know of just a couple more. First edition, English issue from American sheets. Joyce's first novel was published in America by Huebsch from whom Harriet Shaw Weaver, the proprietor of the Egoist Press, purchased "not more than 750" sets of sheets, issuing them here a year before her own UK printing of 1917. Copies in this condition are very uncommon. Slocum & Cahoon A12. [Attributes: First Edition]
Bookseller: Peter Harrington. ABA member [London, United Kingdom]
