Containing rich and detailed accounts of voyages to the East and West Indies, including Du Pont´s expedition to North America. 1605. Paris. Jehan Richer. In 8vo (165 mm x 110 mm). 5 ff. + 499 + 2 ff. Contemporary vellum, spine lettered in ink, ties lacking. Few scattered foxing spots, mainly marginal damp to a few leaves, else very clean and fresh. First edition, second issue(?), a second edition was also published in 1605. An important and considerably scarce work, not mentioned in this edition by Sabin, who only mentions a later edition (1609); additionally, this is a very good copy in its first binding and one of only a few to contain the engraved title page by de Weert (a detail not mentioned either by Alden nor Sabin). Cayet (1525 ? 1610) was a disciple of Pierre Ramée, he converted to Protestantism and eventually became tutor of Henry IV. The work includes details of voyages to the East and West Indies made from 1598 to 1604, dealing extensively with the missionary activities undertaken by the Jesuits in both parts, which includes relevant information on North America and China. Furthermore, it contains one of the first accounts of Champlain´s first voyage to North America ?particularly to Canada-, when he accompanied the Du Pont expedition (1603), organized by Amyar de Chastres, Governor of Dieppe. ?Ouvrage curieux et assez bien écrit? (Brunet). Rare on the market in this condition, only the Parsons ?ex Comly McCoy- and the Streeter copies ?of 1605 editions- have sold in over 20 years at auction, this copy is earlier than either of both.
