[Flanders, Belgium?], ca. 1540. [Flanders, Belgium?], ca. 1540. Small 4to (27.5 x 20 cm; 10,75" x 7.75"), 2 ff. These two consecutive leaves contain the text of Matthew 2:1–11, the birth of Christ and the arrival of the Wise Men. The first page is elaborately decorated with a => large, four-line, painted and illuminated initial “C” and its text is surrounded by a four-part border of flowers, leaves, vines, and grotesques in shades of green red, yellow, brown, and orange. The text itself is accomplished chiefly in black with two lines in red, introduced by an => illuminated initial “I,” all in a standard gothic hand. According to provenance notes of the former owner, the manuscript from which these leaves originate was made for the use of the Chichester Cathedral. This may mean that the leaves were once part of the manuscript fitting this description sold at Sotheby's on 29 June 1938, as lot 528, the manuscript having 54 leaves. The Evangelia Festivalia were the Gospels for the Feast days of the year. Provenance: Chichester Cathedral (?); Vic-Wells Fund (?); lot 528 Sotheby's auction on 29 June 1938 (?); Ex–Allyn K. Ford Collection, Minnesota Historical Society, recently deaccessioned. Very good condition, irregular along the left margin from removal from its binding.
