[Flanders, Belgium?], ca. 1540. [Flanders, Belgium?], ca. 1540. Small 4to (27.5 x 20 cm; 10,75" x 7.75"), 2 ff. These two consecutive leaves contain the text of Matthew 2:1–11, the birth of Christ and the arrival of the Wise Men. The first page is elaborately decorated with a => large, four-line, painted and illuminated initial “C” and its text is surrounded by a four-part border of flowers, leaves, vines, and grotesques in shades of green red, yellow, brown, and orange. The text itself is accomplished chiefly in black with two lines in red, introduced by an => illuminated initial “I,” all in a standard gothic hand. According to provenance notes of the former owner, the manuscript from which these leaves originate was made for the use of the Chichester Cathedral.
