John Speed
The Historie of Great Britaine under the Conquests of the Romans, Saxons, Danes and Normans. Their Originals, Manners, Habits, Warres, Coines, and Seales: with the Successions, Lives, Acts, and Issues of the English Monarchs from Julius Caesar, unto the Raigne of King James, of famous Memorie
Popes-head Pallace, at the signe of the White Horse: George Humble, 1632 A good copy of the 3rd edition, 'revised, enlarged, and newly corrected, with sundry descents of the Saxons Kings, Their Marriages and Armes.' In full leather binding which has been rebacked fairly recently retaining the original boards and adding a new spine and endpapers. The spine has a black gilt tooled title label, raised bands outlined in gilt and blind tooling. The boards appear contemporary, and, although rubbed and scuffed have elaborate blind tooling and the remains of a gilt border. Lacking the frontispiece portrait but otherwise complete. This work continued Speed's 'Theatre of Great Britaine' - and the contents listing refers to the first 4 books which were part of the Theatre, although this work (books 5 - 10) is complete in itself. With numerous woodcut illustrations and tables and head and tailpiece decorations. There is some light staining - mainly affecting the lower margins at the front of the book, and the bottom outer corner towards the end of the book. There is a small repaired tear on p 845 which has left a tiny hole, and an internal tear to one of the contents pages. There is occasional marking and browning but overall this copy is in good to very good condition with good paper quality.
