London: George Allen,, 1894. With a Preface by George Saintsbury and illustrations by Hugh Thomson. Tall octavo. Original brown cloth, titles to spine gilt, top edge trimmed, others untrimmed. Frontispiece and illustrations printed on china paper by Hugh Thomson. Single sheet from a 1927 auction catalogue laid-in. Spine and head of front cover faded, very slight rubbing to extremities, top edge dust toned, light foxing to edges and endpapers; an excellent copy. First illustrated edition, large paper issue, one of 250 copies released in England; a further 25 copies were released in the US. Thomson's "light touch and feeling for period manners provide a charming and accessible gloss to the author's work" (ODNB). This was the first edition to feature illustrations accompanying the text; Bentley's 1833 edition and subsequent printings had featured only a frontispiece.
