Strauss, Johann II. (1825-1899) - Autograph letter signed In vain is death - Also known as Johann Strauss Jr., the Younger or the Son. Austrian composer of light music, particularly dance music and operettas. In his lifetime, he was known as "The Waltz King" and was largely responsible for the popularity of the waltz in Vienna during the 19th century. One of his most famous works is "The Blue Danube". Autograph letter signed "Johann Strauss". 4 pages, bifolium, 5.5 x 8.5 inch, Paris 1867 May 18. A fine combined letter to the wife of his friend, the music publisher Gustav Lewy (1824-1901), who had accompanied him to the Paris World Fair. Strauss had been able to win the conductor Benjamin Bilse and his orchestra for joint performances. Page one and two are handwritten by Lewy, page three and four are handwritten by Johann Strauss. Lewy reports in the introduction on Strauss's reception "with the Princess Metternich, which is intriguing to him in a truly enchanting way and promises a colossal success but he has to play at her ball festival on the 28th ." In Strauss's hand, in parts: ".durch die Versicherungen der Fürstin . und Versprechungen von andren Seiten unser Unternehmen fördern zu wollen - Courage gefasst somit wenn Gott will - wir Beide mit Geld nach Hause kommen - was denn eigentlich die Ursache eines solchen Plagens sich zu unterziehen bildet.
