Contemporary black half calf with red marbled boards, red morocco label lettered in gilt to spine, spine gilt to compartments, red marbled edges and endpapers, text in double columns. Illustrated frontispiece, vignette to title page, 15 steel engravings. Bookplate to pastedown and ownership inscription to title page of Thomas William Kough. Small amount of loss to gilt at foot of spine, corners very slightly rubbed, frontispiece laid down, occasional slight foxing, closely cropped at times not affecting text, top corner of page 299-302 slightly torn affecting pagination. Bound without the 32-page catalogue at the end. An excellent copy. An attractively rebound copy of this edition, which was published in paper covers a few days prior to the completion of Lea and Blanchard's serialized publication of the novel in parts. One of three American editions of Dombey and Son which were published in 1848.
