First Edition. [London], [Christoph Barker], 1589. 22 cm x 27 cm. Titlepage missing, [Only 13 leaves of the 23 leaves of „The Preface to the Reader" present], 496 leaves of the main text complete (!), [3 of 5] pages Table [Index]. Leaves 125 and 423 with a minor lesion. Leaves 282 and 305 slightly stained. Some wormholes in the outer margins only. Faded dampstain. Last 20 pages with some light staining and stronger fraying. Two pages of the Table [Index] missing. The remaining 3 pages of the Index with stronger fraying and some textloss. Leaves 493 - 496 with 9 x7 cm tear to top right corner with text loss (see images). Original full leather of a very likely contemporary 16th or early 17th century century binding. Binding with original endpapers in good condition, though a little shaky but really worth restoring. Spine NOT broken. The missing beginning and end of this rare publication sound dramatic but are worth to be restored. The textblock overall in very good condition and complete (see plenty of images). IMPORTANT: Numeration of textblock is often inaccurate but collation of the 496 leaves is complete. An extremely rare and important publication in any edition. The first edition scarce !! [Roman and italic in various sizes. The Rheims New Testament (1582) and the Bishops' version (1568) in parallel columns, with Rheims annotations and Fulke's confutations].William Fulke D.D.
