KENT, Rockwell.) MELVILLE, Herman.
Moby Dick or The Whale.
Chicago: The Lakeside Press, 1930 - 3 volumes, large quarto. Original black cloth, bevelled boards, titles and vignettes to spines in silver, abstract design and volume numbers within simple frame to front boards in silver, top edges black, others uncut. With the original clear plastic dust jackets with paper flaps. Housed in the original aluminium slipcase. Illustrations faintly offset, mild adhesive staining to vol. 1 pastedowns from dust jackets; the dust jackets slightly yellowed on spines, and rubbed and cockled overall, with mild chipping to outer corners, a sliver of loss to the bottom edge of vol. 1 rear panel, old tape repair to the head of the front flap of vol. 2 (with concomitant trival marking to the board), vol. 3 jacket with a short split on spine and the front flap secured by tape; mottling to underside of slipcase. A superb set, extremely well-preserved owing to the unusual survival of the dust jackets and the slipcase. Wood-engravings throughout by Rockwell Kent. First Rockwell Kent edition, limited to 1,000 sets, rare in this condition, unusually retaining both the dust jackets and the slipcase.
