YOSHIMASU, Todo
Iji Wakumon [trans.: Questions & Answers on Medicine]
28; 31 folding leaves. Two vols. Large 8vo, orig. blue wrappers, orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers (rubbed), new stitching. [Kyoto?]: Heian Shorin, 1769.First edition and a very rare book. Yoshimasu (1702-73), was one of the innovative practitioners of his time. While beginning his career as a surgeon and obstetrician, he began to question established medical hypotheses of his time, especially those which came from China. He ultimately embraced the original teachings of the ancient Chinese physician Henjaku (or in Japan Katsu ju or Hakunin) as expressed in his book Nan kiyo (or Hachi ju-ichi nankyo or Nankyo hongi). He also wrote an extremely influential book Ruishu-ho [trans.: Indications of Kampo Prescriptions] which circulated in manuscript before its posthumous publication in 1799.Written at the end of his career, the Iji Wakumon is a summary of the author's medical beliefs and is somewhat more philosophical than practical. In this work, Yoshimasu argues that the human life span was decided by the gods, criticizes the speculative approach of the Goseiha School, stresses abdominal palpation therapy and the use of strong purging methods. He believed that all diseases came from one poison that could affect different sites to produce various symptoms.Fine copy.
