The German scientist J.R. Forster, one of the most important naturalists of the eighteenth century, travelled on Cook's second voyage. This is the first French translation, based on the English edition of 1786, of Forster's work which originally appeared in 1784, Geschichte der Entdeckungen und Schiffahrten im Norden, a comprehensive history of exploration in regions north of the 50th parallel, concentrating on Asia (Siberia, Tartary) and northern Europe. A single copy recorded in Australian collections (National Library of Australia).
