Letter to the American Congress: 1779 Copy Letter from Lieutenant Colonel Archibald Campbell of the 71st Regt. of Foot. [AND] May 22, 1779 Letter by Archibald Campbell to John Stuart Esq., discussing his recent imprisonment and treatment by the Rebels in America, requesting a new position in the King's Army, and interest in volunteering for service in India
[London], 1779. Manuscript letters. The first letter contains 6 pages. Approx. 9.5" x 7.5". First 4 pages folded. 5th and 6th page on one sheet. Letter is addressed to "Gentleman". At the top right corner of the first page is written - "Copy Letter from Lieutenant Colonel Archibald Campbell of the 71st Regt. of Foot To the American Congress". Signed "A.C." at the end of the letter. The contents of the document are most likely not written in the hand of Campbell. No authentication of the initials "A. C." are made. This letter is a contemporary copy. Paper is of high quality with a variant English Crown watermark. No original document or other contemporary copies of this letter have been found during internet research. No record of this document found being delivered to the American Congress. Campbell was released from captivity in 1778. The letter is dated 1779. Could this letter possibly have been prepared for publication in a newspaper? On the first page of the letter Campbell sarcastically alludes to now leaving, "Being now to depart from under your benign authority, it would indicate the highest inattention in me to omitt a Just tribute of Thanks for the discharge of your Honour in that respect." The second letter is 2 pages. Approx. 9" x 7" paper. Paper is chipped on the edge in three spots with minimal loss of text. Some brown spots or toning to the upper right and left corners of the paper. There are a few faint words on page 2 upper edge. This letter was written in London and addressed "My Dear Sir."
