San Francisco, CA: Arion Press, 2013. large 8vo. three-piece cloth printed on front and back, gilt stamped spine, slipcase. 204 pages. One of 300 numbered copies, signed by the artist. A special edition of George Orwell's 1945 allegory, with illustrations by Jonathan Hammer (b. 1960), who worked for a time as a bookbinder at the Arion Press. As the Stanford University historian Peter Stansky writes in his introduction, "Orwell is a writer of extraordinary power and this may be his greatest masterpiece, a perfect text. As a fable about human nature it transcends the political era in which it was written. It is in so many ways a despairing book, but it has such compassion and empathy. In the end, there is still a glimmer that possibly some day we might create a better and more equal society." Composed in Monotype Times New Roman and letterpress printed on ivory Zerkall mouldmade paper. The 24 relief prints are letterpress printed from polymer plates made from films scratched by the artist with an etching needle for the black images, and with photo-polymer plates made from overlay drawings in pencil for the red tints. Accompanied by the prospectus.

River Rouge Transfiguration for orchestra. Autograph musical manuscript sketch leaf...

Folio, ca. 300 x 220 mm. 1f. (2 pp.). Notated in pencil on 12-stave music manuscript paper. Dated "01/12/13" and marked "Orchestral sketches." Contains various musical ideas, with textual annotations: "Structure moving to big moment: ... Winds: peter out to bursts... bursts w/ brass high str[ings]: move... start to add 16ths, then totally 16ths..." Accompanied by a 1-page signed autograph statement certifying that the manuscript is in the composer's hand. Slightly worn; small stain to lower edge. A fine example of the composer's working methods. Commissioned by the Detroit Symphony, the first performance was given by the Symphony under the direction of Leonard Slatkin on May 31, 2013. "The biggest news of the night was the world premiere of the DSO-commissioned 'Rouge River Transfiguration,' by Missy Mazzoli, winner of the orchestra's Elaine Lebenborn Competition for women composers... Mazzoli has been widely recognized for an omnidirectional aesthetic that marries her highly refined classical music roots with vernacular influences and a kind of indie-rock identity and attitude... The 10-minute 'Rouge River Transfiguration' takes its inspiration from the way in which artists and writers, among them the early 20th Century photographer and painter Charles Sheeler and the contemporary author Mark Binelli, have often seen Detroit industrial monuments like Ford's River Rouge Plant as secular cathedrals of modern life." Mark Stryker, Detroit Free music critic, in a review of the first performance....

        POSTERS FROM WHITTINGTON, 1996-2013.

Lower Marston Farm: Whittington Press, 2013. folio (20 x 15 in). buckram and paper covered boards with leather spine label, full buckram box with leather spine label. not paginated. 34 posters tipped in plus additional suite of 10 posters in separate portfolio. Limited to 150 copies, of which this is one of 60 copies from the 'A' series. In 1995 the Press published A Book of Posters from the Whittington Press, which contained (in the A edition) thirty-five posters printed between 1974 and 1995, in the same types and on the same papers as the originals - indeed some of them were from the original printings, as are a few in this new collection. At the time, in 1995, the Press had printed some 100 posters, and in the eighteen years since another 150 have been added to the total, and thirty-four chosen here show off a great variety of typefaces on equally esoteric variety of papers from England (some over a century old), France, Italy, Czech Republic, Germany, Japan, and Korea. They include illustrations from linocuts, wood-engravings, and in special copies, pochoir, among a dazzling array of the Press's extensive collection of fonts.Whittington Posters are produced as a distraction from more important projects, usually in small editions of 100 or 200 copies, and given away or sold on open days, but have nevertheless become an important part of the Press's output in helping to spread the message about its activities. By their nature they are occasional and ephemeral, and the only time they will ever come together is in a collection such as this. Also included in the collection are posters by Tom Mayo and Patrick Randle, which add a radical note to Whittington's normal fare. An article describing the background and development of the Press' posters appeared in Parenthesis 20 (Spring 2011).34 posters tipped into each double-page spread, with accompanying commentary. The 'A' series includes an additional suite of 10 posters loosely folded (not creased) in a portfolio. Set in 22-point Caslon and printed on Zerkall mould-made paper.

Idolatry Restor'd Special Edition of 66

Three hands press 2013 - from publisher: The translation of magical power to image is a matter well understood in so-called ‘primitive’ sorcery, in which occurs a mutual embodiment of re-presentation and the Represented. The Fetish, for example, apprehends a reciprocal process between Object and Creator that often begins long before chisels and adzes are set to wood, participating in its own reification. Many of these eldritch forms of image-making were concerned with accessing power, and it was only later, in the context of religious devotion, that their forms densified into ‘mere’ idols. With increasing levels of religious control over art, a Moiré pattern arises between the Artist and the forces of the Divine, which may either suppress individual visionary power in favor of canonized icons, or, when correctly accessed, give rise to an ‘heretical creativity’. Witchcraft, because of its syncretic nature, partakes in multiple infusions of traditional image-making lore, including not only sorcery and religious iconography, but also science, craftsmanship, and the fine arts. However, because much of its images are used privately, and indeed created for a limited set of observers, they participate in a concentrated alembic of exposure wherein all who experience them do so in the context of magical practice and devotion. This intensity of private magical interaction provides a locus which enables the image to transcend its medium —and indeed that fetish known as ‘icon’— and generates living numen. First published as an essay in the British folklore quarterly The Cauldron in 2009,Idolatry Restor’d drew upon the experiential arenas of magical practice and Image-Artistry which came to inform Schulke’s book Lux Haeresis (Xoanon, 2011). Here substantially expanded with illustrations prepared especially for the work, Idolatry Restor’d is a book of engaging fascinum for both Artists and Beholders alike, and strikes at the heart of magical image-aesthesis. Harry Schaack, karlonline Bibliographische Angaben ZustandNEU. Im Originalzustand versiegelt.         Tartaros Special Edition signed

Three hands press 2013 - Special Edition - Bound in Full Antique Grey Goatskin signed 25 numbered copies Following information is from the publisher, and remains the copyright of Three Hands Press: "The magical doctrines of the ancient Orphics and Pythagoreans are poorly understood by modern scholars, in part because they were secretive in their own time. Well-known for speaking in riddles and complex ciphers, its adepts were bound by strict taboo and silence, the breaking of which was punishable by death. The enigma of the cult’s teachings was further shrouded by centuries of suppression, and, in some cases, appropriation or misrepresentation, by the growing forces of Christianity. What remains today are the fragments of its lost books, together with the words of those who, for good or ill, wrote about them. In an original interpretation and synthesis apt for today’s student of ancient mysticism and the occult, August Alm advances a new conception of these ancient mystery-cults and their sublime doctrines of Chaos, Darkness and Light. A foundational part of these ancient Greek mystery-cults was the concept of Tartaros. As the abyss of primeval darkness and chaos, Tartaros was, in its most ancient conception, the birthplace of the human soul and the cosmos itself. This vast and incomprehensible dominion held at its center a great fire, an Axis Mundi about which the universe was arranged. In later eras, it passed into myth as a vast and voidful underworld; a place of binding for condemned souls and the enemies of gods, sealed fast with barriers of bronze and iron. Christians later appropriated it as a partition of their own concept of eternal punishment, a division of hell which constrained no less than the fallen angels. An equally enigmatic Pythagorean cipher is the symbol of the Pentagram, or five-fold star, whose form has been revered in western magic for some three millennia, but whose origins and original attributes are shrouded in mystery. Its attribution to the four elements, joined together with aither, was popularized in the middle ages and is its best-known meaning in modern occult sciences. However, its earlier Pythagorean usage was related to health and well-being, and almost certainly adumbrated another retinue of arcana, one which was ancient even at the time of Pythagoras. Exhuming the scattered fragments of these two elder doctrines of Tartaros and the Pentagram, Alm examines their reverberation as occult –and occluded-- concepts through centuries of philosophical thought, in a line connecting the shadowy teachings of such ‘dark traditions’ as the Orphics and the Pythagoreans, later penetrating the adyta of Neoplatonism. Arguing for a new undertanding of the Pentagram, he connects its fivefold mystery to the great powers of Tartaros, and also to such terrifying gods such as Hecate, Nyx, Erebos, Typhon, Cerberus, and the Erinyes. This strand of mystery touches upon such related concepts as the high theogony implicit within the Platonic Solids, the shadowy influence of the Cult of the Idaean Dactyls on Pythagoreanism, the Light which is rooted in Darkness, and the magical pathology of the ‘Unrooted Tree’. The book is 264 pages, with eight illustrations, including original artwork by James Dunk and Timo Ketola." - Copyright Three Hands Press [Attributes: Hard Cover]

OUP Oxford, 2013. New. This collection addresses all of the areas of international law that the International Court of Justice has addressed with depth and nuance. The topics considered include general principles of law, sources of law, treaty interpretation, substantive issues such as the law of the sea, state sovereignty, and state responsibility, questions of jurisdiction and competence, and questions of the Court's procedure. Since 1989, the author, a former Principal Legal Secretary to the International Court of Justice, contributed frequent articles on this subject to the British Yearbook of International Law continuing the work begun by Sir Gerald Fitzmaurice in 1950.         Esse Momento/ Hitotoki no koto (That Moment).

Halle an der Saale, Germany:: Ayano Mouri,, 2013.. Edition of 35. 7 x 11"; 16 pages. Silkscreen printing. Digitally printed text. Concertina structure. Square embossed on cover and pages. Text in Portuguese and Japanese. Blue paper wrappers with white titles. Includes two English translation items laid in, one the English version of image titles and the second a journal entry. Signed and numbered by the artist on the colophon. The vagaries of naming things by working with Google translator (for instance, working from English to Portuguese and back to English) is part of the fun. The real delights are the silkscreens of Portuguese tile designs. Ayano Mouri: "I was in Lisbon for a few days, and these were unforgettable days for me. I met a man who spoke only Portuguese, so we could talk only with a Google translator. But it was pretty exciting and all the words made by Google translator sounded like a nonsense poem. In that city, I wrote something whenever I saw something that impressed me. Everywhere I saw patterns of tile. I tried to play with Google translator again, naming the patterns that had impressed me.

Page size: 13 x 8 inches opening to 13 x 54 inches; 12pp. Bound by the artist: accordion fold hinged with Japanese paper, laid into custom-made tan cloth over boards clamshell box, by Linda Lembke of Green River Bindery, with black and white monoprint image on front panel. The monoprint images are haunting. Starting and finishing with ink-black pages, a series of images of birds in flight, soaring, sprinting, and diving, at times encircled and at other times, freed. The artist has stated that these images mark the space between having departed and not yet arrived, noting the similarities between humankind and these birds. We cross thresholds, big and small, throughout our lifetimes, often not knowing what lies ahead. We hover between here and there, now and then, today and tomorrow. Cover and colophon are letterpress printed by Valerie Carrigan, who pulled the monotypes at The Vermont Studio Center and Sea Mays Printmaking.

A Pop-Up Culinary Herbal. Volume Two of the Plant Lore of the 21st Century Series

Chicago, IL: Paperboy Press, 2013. Artist's book, one of 30 copies, all on commercial cover paper in various weights from various manufacturers, each copy signed and numbered by the artist, Shawn Sheehy, on the colophon. Page size: 6.5 x 4.5 x 1.25 inches; 30pp, including 12 double-page spread pop-up vegetables. Bound: drab boards with red paper spine, small collaged decoration of maize on front panel. The brightly colored papers serve as base for the double-page pop-ups, each with a small (2.5 x 2.5 inches) green printed folded note held closed with matching tab; common name, Latin name and variety printed on the outside, and brief description of the benefits and habits of the plant. These folio cards are mounted in a corner of each double-page spread, For example, the artichoke (Cynara Cardunculus), Green Globe (the featured cultivar) is cited as having high levels of antioxidants, and cynarine with nutritional values that aid digestion, improve liver and gallbladder function and reduce cholesterol. Printed letterpress in Italian electric by Sarah Vogel from photopolymer plates. The Table of Contents divides the plants into two groups: those from the old world and those from the new world. Mr. Sheehy's essay on plants and plant lore is one page as is the colophon. The plants pictured and described are: cabbage, cauliflower, rhubarb, beetroot, chard, asparagus, artichoke, maize, lima bean, pumpkin, tomato, and potato. The 12 plants pictured and described herein are a delight. Brightly colored and charmingly intrusive, they are inviting and garner attention. Once again, Shawn Sheehy has created a tour-de-force book structure. The vibrant plants jump out at the reader - almost shockingly so - then fold up to hide their beauty until the page is once again opened.
