        Lullaby.

Stonington, Maine:: Anne-Claude Cotty,, 2012.. One-of-a-Kind. 1.75 x 2.5 x .375" pendant with book. Pinhole images (silver gelatin prints). Materials: Japanese papers, silk, silver, copper. Miniature accordion book attached to back of pendant. Signed and dated by the artist. Lullaby is wearable art consisting of a miniature book attached to a metal pendant. The mixed metal pendant features a toned pinhole image of a harbor. Text and photography by Anne-Claude Cotty. Reminiscent of the time when books were worn around the neck. Text: "Weary warrior, the sea returns, takes shelter among immutable piers. While it rocks itself to sleep, my questions rise and fall unanswered." Anne-Claude Cotty: "My cameras are ordinary cardboard boxes that have, in most cases, multiple apertures. What they 'see,' however, is anything but ordinary: they can animate simple subjects - lobster traps, buoys, fishing piers down the street from my studio, or a series of 'elements on snow' - and seem to create form and movement. They can take the viewer beyond object or landscape to a place of poetry and metaphorical process."

Die Küste Coromandel.[Zürich, 1803]. Pen drawing (10.3 x 6.3 cm) in grey ink with washes on paper (12.5 x 8.5 cm), signed by the artist in the lower right corner of the illustration and with the title in pencil in the lower margin. The whole mounted on a larger paper leaf (with notes: "dessin no 522" and "Lips f." in ink), with a passepartout and in a gilt wooden frame.

Cf. Andreas Klein, Johann Georg Jacobi (2012), 359; Nagler VIII, pp. 555-558; Thieme & Becker XXXIII, p. 279. Skilfully executed pen and ink drawing by the notable Swiss draughtsman Johann Heinrich Lips (1758-1817), showing a naval officer on a tropical beach on the Coromandel Coast, being welcomed by four half-naked local women with their five children. In the background are three native men in a small rowing boat touching the beach. The present drawing was made for an illustration in Johann Georg Jacobi's Iris. Ein Taschenbuch für 1804 to accompany a text by Franz Xaver Schnetzler titled "Le Vaillant und Mungo Park" (pp. 157-184). The illustration was engraved by Lips himself and contains, besides the caption "Die Küste von Coromandel", the subtitle "Au seiner französischen Handschrift", suggesting the drawing was made after one found in a French manuscript.Slightly browned along the edges of the paper (covered by the passepartout) and a few tiny specks. Otherwise in very good condition.

typo bilder buch / type picture book

Basel, Switzerland:: Studio for Design,, 2012.. Standard: Edition of 65. Deluxe: Edition of 7.. 9.5 x 10.5"; 58 pages. Letterpress printed on a hand proofing press. Printed in four colors (blue, black, red and yellow) on paper towels. Approximately 190 Printing forms and runs. Sewn binding. Letterpress printed pastedowns and free end pages. In letterpress printed dust jacket. Edition: 65 numbered copies plus an additional 7 numbered copies made from proofs and superimpositions from selected printing forms, each page of these 7 books is unique. These are then available in two packages. Standard Edition: one volume from the edition of 65, number 8 through 65. Deluxe Edition: two volumes in a cardboard slipcase, one of the edition of 65, numbered 1-7 and one of the unique books with a corresponding number (e.g., 1/65 and 1/7, 2/65 and 2/7). [This is a standard copy] Romano Hänni, Pictorial Supplement with Translation in American English: "Since the invention of script and the printed word, we have lost access to pictorial statements: we have become character devout. Nonetheless, we still read images. Fluent reading is based solely on prejudices. Teh konwdlegealbe rdeaer deos not pecie toghteer indaidviul chaearcrts to from wrods but peircvees wrod imeags in tiehr etitrney. However, when reading images, signs and symbols, we seem to struggle, even though they also represent a source of information with a simulatneous effect on various levels. Initially, our visual perception looks for symmetry and a human face?. "Page format [of typo bilder buch] was determined by the paper: Paper towels, maxi roll; composition: 100% oxygen-bleached pulp, wet strength additives, agents; roll length: 62.1 m +/- 2%, sheet size: 23 x 26cm, +/- 2%, paper from responsible sources [approved by the Forest Stewardship Council]?. "The design and sequence of the pages were intended to develop during the work process. The first printing forms were blue lines and linear frameworks at the bottom of the pages. New ideas developed during the unrolling and tearing off of double pages of paper towel as well as during composition, setup, printing, and removing of the type. The printing workshop represents the available raw materials: Lead characters, synthetics and wood, brass lines and signs, typographic sign and lead symbols. The typo pictures were composed from individual parts and printed on the hand proofing press; some of them were superimposed in several printing cycles. They are intended to mutually influence and merge into each other and to display an inner connection. The body of the book was bound by hand with thread. Overall production time was approx. 600 hours. This picture book would be delighted if it were used as inspiration to tell a spontaneously made-up story." Supplement: "The purpose of this book is its purposelessness ? superficially speaking.

Judith Fitzgerald Presents II: Six of One

[Toronto]: [Rampike]. 2012. A collection of six limited edition broadsides, plus a biographical page, from seven Canadian poets: Leonard Cohen, George Bowering, Daphne Marlatt, Marty Gervais, Karl Jirgens, Maxine Gadd, and Judith Fitzgerald, with artwork by Cohen and by Alison Dilworth. This is copy No. 6 of 52 numbered sets, which were issued as a fundraiser for BookFest Windsor, a literary festival in Ontario, Canada. Signed by Cohen and Fitzgerald on the broadside of their joint contribution, entitled "Blood Culture," and also stamped with Cohen's personal chop, and embossed with his "Order of the Unified Heart" logo. Additionally inscribed by Fitzgerald on the biographical page. Cohen's biographical statement reads, "Leonard Cohen is." Judith Fitzgerald was a highly respected Canadian poet, and one of the organizers of BookFest Windsor. She and Cohen were longtime friends, and Cohen's allowing her to use his artwork and print a poem as a fundraiser was a way for him to contribute to the festival. The sets were issued unsigned; this is one of four that were signed by Cohen, according to a Fitzgerald email. She called it "the second rarest set," because of the additional stamps, not to mention her own inscription. A unique item as such, and a rare signed Leonard Cohen piece. Together with a review copy of Fitzgerald's last book, Impeccable Regret, which includes a poem she co-wrote with Leonard Cohen. All broadsides fine, 11" x 8-1/2", in a hand-crafted Dilworth envelope; the book is fine in wrappers. First Edition. No Binding. Fine.
