ARCANUM BESTIARUM. Of the Subtil and Occult Virtues of Divers Beasts. With Original Woodcuts by Liv Rainey-Smith. DELUXE LEATHER EDITION, one of only 49 copies, with original woodblock print by Rainey-Smith.

Three Hands Press [Xoanon], California 2012 - Octavo, original full brown antique skiver (sheepskin leather). 272 pp, printed in two colour ink on heavy stock, and illustrated with fifty-five original woodcut designs by artist Liv Rainey-Smith. This is the Deluxe Edition in full brown antique skiver, hand-marbled endpapers, with a unique hand-numbered woodblock print by Liv Rainey-Smith created especially for this edition, limited to 49 copies. Written in the great tradition of the medieval bestiaries, Robert Fitzgerald's long-awaited new work Arcanum Bestiarum re-imagines the animal menagerie in the context of bestial mystery and atavistic power. Written for the modern magical practitioner and zoophile, the work examines the occult virtues and totemic majesties of fifty animals, theriomorphs, and their kindred. Correspondences with deific powers, atavistic wisdom, and mythopoetic emanation are examined, especially in light of the tutelary powers all animals possess. The Tetramorph – essentially an animalic ‘crown of creation’ – is here transformed into the far broader and innovative concept of the ‘Theriomorph’, or, the Zodiak Entire of Creation as an apotheosis of the animal form and zoötype One of the greatest of virtues possessed by the Human is its bestial heritage, both spiritually and genetically. These attributes are often seen as primitive, chaotic and dangerous to civilized culture by the custodians of moralism and religion today, but the fact remains that it is our animal heritage that makes us what we are, or, more accurately, what we should and can be. Special attention is given to the zoomorphic aspects of alchemy, which historically used the bestial emblemata as veils of the stages of the Great Work, as well as shamanism and witchcraft, bodies of knowledge particularly rich in the lore of animals as spirit-helpers. The work is an emergent strand of magical investigation long part of the author’s private life, where he has worked in the ecological field of wildlife rehabilitation, especially raptors. The original woodcut illustrations were prepared especially for this title in close collaboration with the author. Amongst the more ambitious renderings in the work are the occult cryptofauna Homunculus, Manticore, Ouroboros, and Basilisk, as well as animals prominent in the ancient dawn of magick: the Bear, Goat, Viper, Peacock, and more. Completing the design elements is an original typeface designed for the work by calligrapher Gail Coppock, serving to illuminate this grimoire of the Magician’s Primal Eden. Working from an original edition, The Folio Society has created an exquisite facsimile of this masterpiece of the private press movement. The Canterbury Tales is a glorious expression of Eric Gill?s genius. In this varied, vibrant work, Gill displayed his artistic versatility, and succeeded in marrying the illuminated manuscript tradition with a Modernist aesthetic. For this facsimile edition, The Folio Society has created an exquisite binding based on Gill?s own designs for the Physician?s and the Summoner?s tales. The work itself is represented in a meticulously exact facsimile, created directly from an original copy. Copies of the original print run of 500 very rarely reach the open market, and one of the few examples in recent years sold for $9,000. This beautifully produced facsimile represents an outstanding opportunity to own this work at an affordable price. A landmark of English poetry, The Canterbury Tales has appeared in many illustrated editions over the centuries. The Golden Cockerel Press edition of 1929-1931, illustrated by Eric Gill, is among the most remarkable. It is one of the most beautiful books produced in the twentieth century, a triumph of the art of the private press. Gill?s powers of imagination can be seen in many individual touches. Into the title illustration he has incorporated a cockerel, symbol of the press. The General Prologue is illustrated with the martyrdom of Thomas à Becket, whose shrine at Canterbury was the pilgrims? goal. The opening illustration to ?The Man of Law?s Tale? (below right) depicts Constance, the Christian daughter of a Roman emperor, cast adrift by her father. Gill shows her carrying her child, who appears only later in the Tale ? thus creating a visual reference to the Madonna and Child. The curved timbers of the boat fuse with the swirling waves, creating a harmonious design full of tender beauty. Gill?s illustrations for The Canterbury Tales were rich indeed: half-page illustrations, tail pieces and initial letters for each of the tales, and copious borders which he designed as pairs throughout the book. Blue and red initial letters are used at intervals to add variety ? an inspired, thoroughly modern response to the medieval manuscripts Gill admired.
