Farbwechsel: weiß, gelb, grün, blau, rot, schwarz.

Flörsheim, Main, Germany:: Ines von Ketelhodt,, 2011 - 2013.. Edition of 33. 43.7 x 30.7 x 7.4 cm (17.2 x 12.1 x 2.9")'; six books in a printed cloth-covered clamshell box. The six books have an identical format (41.8 x 29.4 cm / 16.5 x 11.6"). White: 56 pages, bound in printed paper over boards with printed linen spine. Yellow: Handset and letterpress, 88 pages, bound in printed paper over boards. Green: 64 pages, bound in printed paper over boards with linen spine. Blue: 32 pages. Red: Photographs printed with polymer plates in letterpress using inks in several "lipstick" colors; 60 pages, bound in printed paper over boards. Black: 32 pages, vat paper, printed paper over boards. Processes: photography; hand composition; polymer plates; letterpress; offset; and digital printing. Signed and numbered. Ines von Ketelhodt: "The project farbwechsel/color change consists of six books … Each book is dedicated to a single color. Starting out from classic color theory I placed the colors yellow, green, blue and red between white and black. The project gave me an opportunity to work on the subject of color in different ways. I assigned appropriate topics, text, and pictures to the individual colors, with photography, printing ink and colored papers playing a role. The six books have an identical format (about 17 to 12 inches), but differ in their handling. Some are horizontal, some upright format, one is a concertina. "farbwechsel: weiß - In Eastern cultures white is the color of mourning and death. The white volume contains photographs and headlines about the tsunami disaster that struck Japan on March 11, 2011. They were taken from international online newspapers and were collected from March 11, 2011 to March 11, 2012. The selection includes many different voices from various countries and languages. The photographs (polymer plates) and handset dates (72 point, condensed Block) were printed in letterpress with white ink on white paper. In spite of the different white shades of paper and printing ink, the monochrome white/white print result is difficult to read. This was obviously my intention and is an important aspect of the book. he twenty-four explanatory headlines of the respective dates, I have used in their different languages, appear together on a spread at the end of the book … "farbwechsel: gelb - The yellow book contains a complete chapter by H. C. Artmann tale Die Sonne war ein grünes Ei ('The sun was a green egg' in German original). It's a funny surrealistic genesis about the creation of the world and its objects. It is about the jealous relationship of sun, moon and a certain object, as well as the genesis of stars and falling stars. As not more than five or six of the large wooden letters fit into a line, I couldn't break the lines by dividing words according to syllables. Printed with yellow ink on yellow paper the text at first sight seems more like a pattern, but it is still legible. It was this ambivalence that interests me in the book: type face as a vehicle for content and type face as pure shape or texture. … "farbwechsel: grün - It contains a text passage by Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse (in English/German) … In the green book I have tried to visualize the topic of dissolved shapes, abstract symbols, the recognition of a letter's shape and the form of words. All letters were cut individually into two parts so that the fragments of each letter look different. Then the two fragment levels were printed digitally in different shades of green onto two transparent foils. Finally in the bound book they are lying over each other, but the fragments are a bit shifted, so the reader can shift the foils until they converge, thus making the text legible. Practiced readers are able to complete even heavily fragmented letter shapes through cognitive supplementation, while reading. "farbwechsel: blau - The blue book contains a poem by Hans Arp 'Himmelblaue Seelen/Sky-blue souls' (in German) and photographs, which were taken with long exposure times in the aquarium of the Frankfurt zoo. Time exposure captures a phase of time that we normally cannot perceive. Movements are blurred, they dissolve in time. Fish that moved slowly or remained in a position, are more easily recognized in the picture, than those, that were swimming fast. Even though the fish were there and swam through the picture, they can sometimes completely disappear, not leaving any 'light'-trace. Their time within the field of view was too short, to form an image on the sensor of my camera. The photographs are printed in offset, the poem in letterpress using transparent ink. So the text gets its color by the underlying photograph. The glossiness of the transparent ink lets you easily read the type face on the photographs. "farbwechsel: rot -Inspired by Giuseppe Tornatore's movie Cinema Paradiso I began collecting kiss scenes for the red book. The movie is set in a small catholic village in Italy during the forties. It is about the history of cinema and movie. And there is this wonderful story about censored kiss scenes. For the red book I took kiss photographs from the television screen. My idea was that in the book all women should kiss all men and all men should kiss all women. New couple combinations are created with Lauren Bacall, Diane Baker, Humphrey Bogart, Charlie Chaplin, Tony Curtis, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Peter O'Toole, Gregory Peck and Elizabeth Taylor ('Some Like It Hot', 'To Have and Have Not', 'How to Steal a Million', 'Mirage', 'The Kid', 'Cleopatra'). "farbwechsel: schwarz - The black book is a concertina (31 feet) printed on both sides. The black-and-white photographs were taken while wandering through the city of Frankfurt, Germany without looking through the view finder of the camera. Chance as well as the trajectory and bodily movement of the stroller define the picture's viewpoint. 'La Notte' a text by Giorgio Manganelli gave me the inspiration for the book. … Said cuboid-shape gave me the idea to print a slightly translucent black letterpress rectangle with a polymer plate onto my offset-printed night photographs. The significantly darker letterpress-black creates a second level on the offset photograph. But the photograph beneath is still visible through the overprint. Manganelli's text (in Italian and German) appears in some of the black rectangles. The type face is negative on the polymer plate and seems on the print sometimes lighter, sometimes darker due to the structure of the photograph beneath, shaped by the picture.

De diebus criticis et ægrorum decubitu libri duo.Padua, Paulus Frambottus, 1652. 4to. With ca. 230 letterpress diagrams in text. Contemporary stiff paper wrappers.

ICCU 002335; Thorndike VII, pp. 122-124; for the author: DSB I, pp. 244-245; cf. Ibn Ezra, Elections, interrogations, and medical astrology (2011), pp. 24-25. Second edition of Argoli's work on astrological medicine, divided into two "books", the first covering the doctrine of critical days -- "The critical days in their Arabic garb had a long life: the doctrine first appears in Kitab ayyan al-buhran (On the Critical Days), which is an Arabic translation of Galen's De diebus decretoriis by Hunayn Ibn Ishaq al-Ibadi, and continues in the medical worjs of al-Razi, Haly Abbas, Avicenna, and others"(Ibn Ezra) -- and the second provides "prognostica" that allowed an astrologer to tell whether a disease would be curable, long, or chronic, based on observations made by the ancients. Argoli often refers to the works of Galen and Hippocrates (Boqrat). With an occasional line underscored and some lines ticked off in the outer margin. Binding slightly soiled, but otherwise very good. Corners of the first few leaves slightly thumbed, a minor waterstain in the last few leaves, and a minor tear in the title-page; a very good copy, wholly untrimmed.

TOOTH FOR AN EYE: A CHOROGRAPHY OF VIOLENCE IN ORLEANS PARISH: THE DELUXE EDITION

Santa Fe, NM: Twin Palms Publishers, 2011. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Santa Fe, NM: Twin Palms Publishers, 2011. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 64 pages. Collection of circular photographs juxtaposed with crime records, presented as an Artist Book. Deluxe Edition of 26 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with the Limited Edition. The Deluxe Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Jack Woody: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial hard boards with titles on the spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Deborah Luster. Text fragments by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, W. G. Sebald, and C. D. Wright appended at the end. Original 16 X 15 inch gallery print-sized gravure print encased in its own black folio and laid into the box. Pale gray pictorial clamshell cloth box. Produced in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Deborah Luster's "Tooth For An Eye". The sequel and companion volume to "One Big Self". If the latter consisted of portraits of criminals/prisoners, the present collection is a record of crime scenes juxtaposed with a description of the crime that took place. If "One Big Self" gave criminals a human face, "Tooth For An Eye" gives the otherwise nondescript crime scene a human trace. Luster reproduces each photograph as every camera actually takes it: A circle that is technically called the iris (as in one's eyes), which harks back to 19th-century portraiture, reminding us that a photograph is first seen by the human eye as round before it is filled out and printed as a square or rectangle. "Explores the city in a new way, creating a compelling portrait in the form of a photographic archive of contemporary and historic homicide sites. Explores the themes of loss and remembrance in a series of photographs that offer an opportunity for the viewer to enter deeper into the idea of the city, a place where life and death coexist, neither free of the other's influence" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Deborah Luster collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Deborah Luster. Laid-in is an original 16 X 15 inch gallery print-sized gravure print, also very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in pencil on verso by the photographer. This title is a contemporary photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Deluxe Edition available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 30 duotone plates, 1 original print. One of the most brilliant American photographers of our time. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER DEBORAH LUSTER TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1931885982.

[5 photographic lantern slides of Mecca and Medina (silver gelatin glass positives), taken in the years 1880 to 1889].Stuttgart, Lichtbilderverlag Theodor Benzinger, [ca. 1910]. 5 glass positive lantern slides (8.5 x 10 cm), each with a black paper mask, paper tape around the edges, a letterpress slip at the foot giving the publisher's name and city, and a slip at the head with the manuscript title. Kept in a contemporary purpose-made wooden box with brass fittings, with the word "Mekka" on the top of the hinged lid.

Cf. D. v.d. Wal, Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (2011); J. J. Witkam, new introduction to the 2007 reprint of the 1931 English translation of Hurgronje, Mekka. Five of the earliest and best photographs of Mecca and Medina, beautifully preserved as silver gelatin glass plates, including the first photograph of the Ka'ba in Mecca's Masjid al-Haram (Great Mosque). Two of the photographs were taken by the first person to photograph Mecca and Medina, the Egyptian Colonel Muhammad Sadiq Bey (1832-1902), who made them in 1880 for the Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamid II. The others were taken by the first European to photograph Mecca, Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje, and Al-Sayyid 'Abd al-Ghaffâr, who worked closely with him. Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936), one of the greatest pioneering Dutch Arabists, converted to Islam and lived in Mecca from January to about July 1885. The photographs by these three men are best known and most often reproduced from the published collotype facsimiles, and the rare surviving early albumin prints are usually faded and often otherwise in bad condition. The present five plates, sold as lantern slides for magic lantern presentations, are therefore of the greatest importance as well-preserved high quality images of these famous photographs, providing the best early images of the mosques of Mecca and Medina. All five slides are in very good condition, with only a bit of dust and an occasional smudge on the glass. They show:1) The Masjid al-Haram in Mecca (the Great Mosque)2) A closer view of the Ka'ba in Mecca3) A portrait of an unidentified Mu'ezzin in Mecca4) A portrait of an unidentified East Indian pilgrim5) The al-Masjid an-Nabawi in Medina (the Prophet's Mosque)

The Holy Land & Egypt and Nubia (Two Volumes: Limited Edition)

Folio Society. Fine. 2011. First Edition Thus. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall Two volumes measuring 20" x 13 ¾". No. 643 of the Folio Society's limited edition of 1000 copies; hand-numbered on a special limitation page in both volumes. Bound in full red cloth printed in black and gold with designs by Neil Gower from Roberts’ originals. Gilded top edges; red ribbon markers. The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea and Arabia: 304 pp; 123 plates, portrait of Roberts and map. Egypt and Nubia: 272 pp; 124 plates and map. Printed by Editoriale Bortolazzi, Verona, on heavyweight Gardapat Kiara paper. Presented in hand-made slipcases bound in cloth and lined with coloured paper, with inserts in the bases to support the weight of the books. David Roberts was the first British painter to make an artistic expedition to Egypt and the Holy Land. The result of his travels was a picturesque vision of the Near East that has been hugely influential ever since. Nearly 200 years later, his work is held in institutions such as the Library of Congress in Washington and London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. Because of its scale, and the scarcity of complete first editions, Roberts’s work has rarely been reproduced in its entirety and never before on this scale. In this Folio Society limited edition, all 247 lithographs have been reproduced from one of the few complete hand-coloured copies, held at the John Rylands Library in Manchester. Two fine copies in fine slipcases, all without defects. Complete and in original FS packaging. Heavy/oversize set which may incur an additional postage cost. .

        Luca Matti. Dodici Volte Luca.

2011 - A cura di Mauro Pispoli. Testi di Enrico Ghezzi e Carlo Frittelli. Firenze, Frittelli Arte Contemporanea, 2011; cofanetto, 12 tavv. col., cm 29,5x42. (Lorand Hegyi in Luca Matti.

Ostensibly writing as a typical correspondent for Gourmet, dispatched to the annual Maine Lobster Festival, an event described by a senior editor of Food & Wine magazine as 'one of the best food-themed galas in the world,' Wallace subverts the gourmet reader's expectation of an appetizing culinary excursion by serving up a critique of the Festival as well as American tourism, and, most notably, invoking both neuroscience and philosophy in an exceedingly close consideration of the ethics of boiling lobsters alive for our, and his own, gustatory pleasure. Matthew Robbins' adroitly cropped and beautifully printed photographs complement Wallace's ruminations with hints of the barbarism on display, which Wallace suggests might be regarded by future generations 'in much the same way we view Nero's entertainments or Mengele's experiments'Ña gleaming, steaming row of efficient lobster cookers deployed for mass cooking, the claw-like hands of a husband and wife tearing at lobster meat, the great gut of an overweight man pushing up against a table of lobsters and fried food. This handsome volume, printed by highly regarded Maine printer Scott Vile and bound by noted Maine bookbinder Gray Parrot, is a fitting tribute to a talented author and his probing and thought-provoking essay on the grim fate of a Maine icon.         WAITS/CORBIJN '77-'11 Photographs by Anton Corbijn Curiosities by Tom Waits

Inbunden bok. Schirmer/Mosel; Slp Ltd edition (December 26, 2011). 1, OUT OF PRINT uppl. 2011. 272 pages, 226 color and duotone plates s. Inbunden. Collector?s Edition of 6,600 copies with slipcase. 36 cmx25,5 cmcm. 3500 gram. Nyskick. Skyddsomslag finns i nyskick. WAITS/CORBIJN ?77-?11 is the celebration of an artistic collaboration that reaches back more than 35 years, to those first black-and-white photographs of Tom Waits taken by a young and virtually unknown Anton Corbijn in Holland in 1977. Corbijn would go on to acclaim for his iconic, enigmatic portraits of musicians and other artists ? from U2 and Miles Davis to Robert De Niro and Clint Eastwood to Damien Hirst and Gerhard Richter ? also becoming a pioneer in music video and more recently, an award-winning director of feature films. By 1977, Tom Waits was already known worldwide for a series of stunning, timeless albums, filled with songs of a noir-tinged Los Angeles that owed as much to writers like John Fante and Jack Kerouac as it did to the jazz, blues, and tin-pan alley that had soaked into Waits? pores from childhood. Ahead of Waits lay his partnership with Kathleen Brennan ? leading to such touchstone recordings as Rain Dogs and Mule Variations ? his film work with the likes of Francis Ford Coppola and Jim Jarmusch, and his stage projects with legendary director Robert Wilson. In those first photographs, then, are the seeds of these two intertwined careers, feeding off each other. Waits? vibrant persona helped Corbijn define his narrative, cinematic style of still photography: images that felt as if you were coming in on the middle of some unfolding drama. In turn, Corbijn helped Waits evolve his visual style into a new theatrical self that synced beautifully with the experimental music he was making with Brennan. And lead him to his own photography, collected here for the first time under the title ?Curiosities,? a visual handle to the artistic intelligence millions of fans know only through his music. Photographs of Tom Waits by Anton Corbijn, photographs by Tom Waits of the vivid quotidian, stretching down through the years, and presented for the first time in a beautiful clothbound book; side by side, these 226 images record one of the longest and most fruitful collaborations in the careers of both artists.         Visions

Massachusetts: Viewpoint Editions, 2011. Hardcover. Fine. Hardcover. Number 13 of 15 copies. This mystical book by the award winning book artist Dorothy Simpson Krause draws upon her work as a painter, collage-maker, and printmaker. The text is from Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem "Kubla Kahn or A Vision in a Dream, A Fragment," composed in 1797 after an opium-induced dream. Krause's imagery creates a vision of a savage place, with holy and enchanted caverns, walls, towers and a sacred river where "the shadow of the dome of pleasure floated midway on the waves." These haunting images of submerged architectural passageways, lit from within, reflect the branches of trees and illuminate floating leaves and flowers. Bound in gold and brown Asahi fabric over boards with gold cloth spine. The title and author are stamped in gold on a gold paper label on the front board. Laserprinted with endsheets of mustard gold Lokta paper. Housed in a gold organza bag with gold drawstring ties. In fine condition. About 5 x 7 inches. Unpaginated. PRI/100312.

The poems have a great deal of space in them, space suggestive of what is missing and of silence, and reflect a feeling of distance from the natural world that seems to be disappearing. ... I created photographs of plants and feathers that reflect the content of the poems. The images were digitally manipulated and separated then printed in tight registration on Rives BFK." All 247 Lithographs In The First Ever Large-scale Reproduction. David Roberts was an artist with ambition. Born in relative poverty outside Edinburgh, he spent years developing his skills as an apprentice and a jobbing artisan, graduating to a career painting backdrops for the theatre, first in Edinburgh and then in London's Covent Garden and Drury Lane. By 1837, he had achieved renown for his landscape paintings of the Rhine and Spain. Unlike most artists, who relied on sketches brought back by other travellers, Roberts had visited these countries himself. His adventurous approach and his technical brilliance would serve him well on the journey of a lifetime – an artistic pilgrimage to Egypt and the Holy Land, the first ever undertaken by a British artist. Because of its scale, and the scarcity of complete first editions, Roberts's work has rarely been reproduced in its entirety and never before on this scale. In this Folio Society limited edition, all 247 lithographs have been reproduced from one of the few complete hand-coloured copies, held at the John Rylands Library in Manchester.
