        Animal Dreams

Susan Allix, London 2011 - Hardcover. Number 14 of 15 copies. Numbered and signed by the artist. The noted English book artist Susan Allix began making books in 1973 and has created over fifty books during the last forty years. This is a collection of whimsical poems about thirteen animals with charming full page, full color illustrations of each. Featured animals include the cormorant, squid, hedgehog, platypus, elephant, and more. One of our favorite poems is about the hedgehog "A hedgehog's not the thing for me, with spines to fear and dread; though if I went to India, they might think I'm a bed." Each animal has its own introductory title page set in a typeface to match its character. Bound in yellow cloth with paper title label and illustration to front cover. The text is letterpress printed on Somerset mould made paper in Bell type. The illustrations are printed digitally with archival inks from Susan's original colored pencil drawings. Housed in a black corrugated folder with paper title label to spine. In fine condition. Unpaginated [61 pages]. ARTB/032613. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

New. * "The best and last [edition], which has superseded all older ones, is in English; the whole thirteen Parts in 6 vols. 8vo. London, 1826." Wallace 194-195. This edition is also noteworthy for the inclusion of Coke's complete prefaces. Sir Edward Coke [1552-1643] was considered to be the greatest legal practitioner of his day. Written between 1572 and 1616, The Reports are not reports in the conventional sense but highly detailed anthologies of precedents organized according to the cases they consider. In each instance Coke assembled a large body of cases, outlined their arguments, and explained the reasons for the judgment, using it as a basis for a statement of general principles. They are, in effect, a series of treatises on the points of law adjudged, and not merely notes for citation. Taken together, The Reports form the most extensive and detailed treatment of Common Law pleading that had yet appeared. A work of immense authority, it was often cited as The Reports, there being no need to mention the author's name. His accounts, especially of pleadings, were applauded for both their clarity and usefulness as stylistic models for students. And his selection of cases, cited frequently in subsequent years, has served as the starting point for numerous decisions. He also attracted some powerful enemies, however, principally James I, who was angered by some of his opinions concerning royal prerogative.       [New York 2011 - Artist's book, one of 15 copies only, all on Somerset black paper, each signed and numbered by author / artist, Sarah Plimpton. Page size: 11-3/4 x 15-5/8 inches; 9pp. including titlepage and colophon. Bound: loose as issued in tan cloth over card stock envelope printed with author and title in black on front panel. The nine pages, which are all original woodcuts, as well as the text printed letterpress in Caslon, were accomplished by Sarah Plimpton with the assistance of Brad Ewing at The Grenfell Press. This is a "jigsaw" book; i.e. there are nine "jigsaw" woodcuts printed in white on black paper. The carved block is cut by a jigsaw and then reassembled on the letterpress bed and printed with white ink on black paper. The lines seen are the result of the cuts made by the jigsaw. The text reads, "Storms / open each door / now / to see / walking through / the wind / will slam / them shut / behind." Using this challenging method of woodcut printmaking, she has succeeded in creating the concept of incremental change with images to match her words. Her images are swirls - whirl pools and circles looping back on themselves, lines denoting negative space, paired with stops, the text in between these swirls. Ms. Plimpton has made common occurrences in the natural world a parable for human emotions with this book, which is at once deeply personal yet detailing a universal experience. See an Image.         Aeolian Giraffes.

[Leonia, NJ 2011 - Artist's book, one of 25 copies, on various papers, including Bristol Board Masa, Mulberry, Strathmore 400 and Crown Point Synergy, each numbered and signed by the artist / author, Lois Morrison. Page size: 4 x 8 inches, boards 5-1/2 inches wide to accommodate giraffes' necks which protrude beyond page size; 12pp. Bound: by the artist leporello style in accordion fold with boards covered in white book cloth with outline map of Africa in gold gilt, the book housed in fabric case of black cloth with the same gold gilt map of Africa. The text is hand lettered by the artist. The giraffes themselves are printed on interference-splattered frosted plastic. The artist / author has used a Gocco printer for all, and has hand-touched all with Pigma pens, except the landscape which was color copied. She explains in the artist's statement that, "the book is based on a fortunate mis-reading of Temple Grandin's writing about friendships between giraffes, among others, "Aeolian". Aeolus is the god of winds so they must be the most delicately beautiful creatures on the African plains. Re-reading the passage, I realized the word was "Angolan", but by then it was too late; the image had taken hold." The resulting fantasy is this book. The giraffes themselves are collaged in three-dimensional "pens" that all the reader to see several at once, along with the requisite collaged binoculars and cameras necessary for any African photo safari. The necks of the giraffes extend beyond the pages so that all are visible once the front cover is opened, poking majestically out from the folded pages. A wonderfully whimsical book, an homage to an elusive creature. See an Image. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

TOOTH FOR AN EYE: A CHOROGRAPHY OF VIOLENCE IN ORLEANS PARISH - Deluxe Clamshell-Box Edition With Original Gallery Print-Sized Gravure Print

Santa Fe, NM: Twin Palms Publishers, 2011 - 1st Printing. Signed. 64 pages. Published in 2011. Artist Book. Collection of circular photographs juxtaposed with crime records. Deluxe Edition of 26 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with the Limited Edition. An austerely elegant production by Jack Woody: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial hard boards with titles on the spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Deborah Luster. Text fragments by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, W. G. Sebald, and C. D. Wright appended at the end. Original 16 X 15 inch gallery print-sized gravure print encased in its own black folio and laid into box. Pale gray pictorial clamshell cloth box. Produced in the United States to the very highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents the sequel and companion volume to Deborah Luster's "One Big Self". If the latter consisted of portraits of criminal/prisoners, the present collection is a record of crime scenes juxtaposed indispensably with a description of the crime that took place. If "One Big Self" gave criminal/prisoners a human face, "Tooth For An Eye" gives the otherwise nondescript crime scene a human trace. Luster reproduces the photographs as every camera actually takes them: A circle called the iris (as with one's eyes), which harks back to 19th-century portraiture (and even cinema), reminding us that all photographs are taken as the eye sees it before it is filled out and printed as a 4 X 5 square. "Explores the city in a new way, creating a compelling portrait in the form of a photographic archive of contemporary and historic homicide sites. Explores the themes of loss and remembrance in a series of photographs that offer an opportunity for the viewer to enter deeper into the idea of the city, a place where life and death coexist, neither free of the other's influence" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Deborah Luster collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Deborah Luster. Laid-in is an original gravure print, also very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in pencil on verso by the photographer. This edition is an instant collectible. This is one of very few copies still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A very scarce signed copy thus. 30 duotone plates, 1 original print. One of the greatest living American photographers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER DEBORAH LUSTER TITLE IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 1931885982.         Visions. Text of "Kubla Kahn or A Vision in a Dream, A Fragment. Images by Dorothy Krause.

Viewpoint Editions, Marshfield Hills, MA 2011 - Artist's book, one of 15 copies, all on Mohawk Superfine 80# coverstock, each signed and numbered on the last page by the artist, Dorothy Simpson Krause. Page size: 7 x 5 inches; 32pp. Bound: sewn in case binding of Asahi fabric over boards, tan cloth spine, title and author gold-foil stamped on gold oriental paper on front cover, endsheets of Lokta paper, housed in gold organza bag with gold drawstring ties. Coleridge's text is printed with an HP Indigo 5500 by Acme Bookbinding in Lucinda Handwriting font and Mistral for the cover. The artist's statement tells us that Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem, KUBLA KAHN OR A VISION IN A DREAM, A FRAGMENT, was composed in 1797 after an opium influenced dream. Ms. Krause has informed and captured the "vision" of the poem with a series of images of submerged architectural passageways, lit from within. They reflect branches, illuminate floating leaves and flowers and reference Coleridge's cataclysmic vision. The book is often dark - but shot with streaks of light, mysterious and romantic enough for even Kubla Khan. See an Image. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Aesop's Fables. Illustrated with Architectural Adornments on New York City Buildings.

Red Angel Press, Bremen, Maine and New York, NY 2011 - Limited edition, one of 50 copies, all on Nideggen paper, each signed and numbered by the artist / printer, Ronald Keller. Page size: 9-1/2 x 9-1/2 inches; 14pp. Bound by the artist: tan cloth over boards with cast paper bas relief of "Aesop" on front cover, author's name printed in black on spine. Hand set and printed letterpress in American Garamond 648 by Ronald Keller. The selection of AESOP'S FABLES is based on the architectural elements that are represented in the bas reliefs. The animals portrayed are to be found on buildings in the Borough of Manhattan as an integral part of the facades - not as subsidiary features or stand-apart sculpture or plaza decoration. The animals portrayed are the Lion, Rat and Elephant, Bull, and Bear. Each bas-relief image faces its page of appropriate fables. These open first to the left, then top, bottom, and lastly, to the right, so that all images may be seen when the book is fully opened. The street address where the Lion, Rat and Elephant, Bull and Bear reside is printed below the cast paper bas-relief. A beautifully constructed book, with images of the familiar creatures of these fables that amuse as well as bring the stories to life. It is quite a task for a bas-relief, but these white paper casts are more than up to it as they fit so perfectly on the tan paper and are set off by the black ink. See an Image.       Incline Press, Oldham 2011 - 4to. quarter parchment over paper covered boards, slipcase. 178, (4) pages. First edition and one of 300 numbered copies. Lovers of beautiful books, elegant design, and clear typography will be thrilled with this new volume about the book artist, Emil Rudolf Weiss. Weiss stands high in the pantheon of great book artists that includes William Morris, Bruce Rogers and Francis Meynell, among others, but because his work was mostly in Germany, he tends to be less well known in the English speaking world; certainly not much has been written about him or his work in English since the 1930s. Yet he was sufficiently regarded by Stanley Morison to be a guest designer for an issue of The Fleuron; another issue of which included an essay by Morison about Weiss ornaments. His Weiss-Antiqua typeface was particularly popular in the USA, mainly due to the availability for slug casting through Intertype matrices, and the publicity work of the Bauer Type Foundry office in New York. Today, most of us have, perhaps unknowingly, seen the digital version of Weiss roman, if not the original metal version. It remains a popular typeface, particularly in book work where one of its recent outings was on the dust-jacket of the US edition of The Da Vinci Code, and the UK edition of Revenge of the Mooncake Vixen. Jerry Cinamon studied graphic design at the Yale School of Art & Architecture, and first came across Weiss Initials while working in New York in the early 1960s. He had a long and successful career working at Penguin books, learning German after his retirement to produce his excellent biography of Rudolf Koch (Oak Knoll, 2000). Included are numerious pieces of ephemera and the prospectus. quarter parchment over paper covered boards, slipcase [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Circus The Artist As Saltimbanque

Shanty Bay Press, [Shanty Bay, ON Canada] 2011 - The book is hand-set using Deepdene on 200 gsm Arches cover, it is quarter bound in cloth and Somegami paper and is housed in a cloth-covered slipcase. It has been designed jointly by Janis Butler and Walter Bachinski. Four fill page pochoirs and eight multi-colored linocuts created and executed by Walter Bachinski. Printing on a Vandercook Universal 1 and binding were done by Janis Butler. There were 55 copies published. This one, number 30, signed by Walter Bachinski and Janis Butler on the Colophon page. With the original prospectus laid in; Many artists, writers, dancers, and musicians of the late 19th and early 20th centuries were drawn to the theme of the circus, often exploring the notion of the artist as a performer. Picasso & Cezanne, both of whom have influenced Bachinski, have made great circus paintings. He, himself, has used circus imaginery in many of his pastels and the circus has fascinated him ever since he was a little boy. The book contains a variety of writings from this area loosely based on the idea of the artist and the circus. The authors include Apollinaire, Beaumont, Baudelaire, Miller, Rilke and Twain. The excerpts are different in both style and content; they are funny, surreal, serious and poignant. Together with the illustrations the hope of ths artist was to evoke the richness of the circus experience, where there are three rings of simultaneous activity, within something different happening in each one First Edition; First Printing; Signed by Author [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

1922 - 2011. - A once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire what is thought to be the most extensive collection of Mervyn Peake items in the world. This collection has been formed over a period of more than 30 years and consists of over 500 individual items. Of course, all the published books are represented in 1st Edition, but in addition there are a large number of variant issues, some previously unrecorded and some so far known only by a single example. There are subsequent edition, re-issues, foreign editions, paperbacks, proof copies, etc. This is the collection of a fanatical completist which means that multiple copies of some titles are present with small variances. At some stage even a completist had to stop however; copies of Swiss Family Robinson appear with a wide variety of coloured headbands so I stopped at half a dozen copies. But even some previously unknown variants are present: The Grey Walls Press edition of his Drawings is represented by 3 different issues; the Davis Poynter Edition of Drawings by 2 issues. In addition there are typescripts of three of his plays; The Cave, The Wit to Woo, and Those Wicked Doctors [the only known copy], all apparently agent?s copies. There are inscribed copies of Shapes and Sounds [Walter de la Mare?s copy], The Glassblowers, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, Mr Pye [with a lovely pen and ink illustration of a be-winged Mr Pye looking out to sea], Figures of Speech [with an additional illustration inserted which was not used in the published version], and the only signed copy of the Keepsake Press Poems I have seen, with the added bonus that it was Maurice Collis?s copy [he wrote the introduction], with a charming letter from Collis to his son recounting a meeting with Maeve. A copy of Bleak House [published posthumously], with an original illustration of Mr Turveydrop [actually two illustrations back to back], a variant of that used in the published version. A scrap-book with proof pulls for his illustrations for Grimm?s Household Tales [including three unused illustrations]. The very rare menu for a PEN dinner known in this single example; the rare wartime propaganda postcard, known in only two examples; a rare etching issued as a card known only in this single example; a large sheet of three illustrations printed by Cowell?s of Ipswich as a trial of their ?Plasticowell? process, known only in this example. A very large number of periodicals including his earliest published piece, printed when only 11 years old; rare issues of Pinpoints, Ballet, Eve?s Journal, as well as the more obvious Lilliput, London Mercury, etc. Exhibition catalogues from the 1930s to the present day; a large run of Christmas cards designed by Peake and signed by his wife Maeve; theatre programmes designed by Peake, a mint copy of the only bookplate designed by him; other ephemera. There are mock-ups and proofs for the Libanus Press editions of Alice and The Ancient Mariner and trials for the binding of the facsimile reprint of Captain Slaughterboard. There is not a detailed catalogue or listing available, prospective purchasers are invited to view the collection by prior appointment. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Page size: 11-3/4 x 15- 5/8 inches; 10pp. including titlepage and colophon. Bound: loose as issued in grey cloth over card stock envelope printed with author and title in dark grey on front panel. The ten pages, which are all original woodcuts, as well as the text printed letterpress in grey ink in Caslon, were accomplished by Sarah Plimpton with the assistance of Brad Ewing at The Grenfell Press. This is a "jigsaw" book; i.e. there are ten "jigsaw" woodcuts printed in pale, ephemeral colors - shades of yellow, grey, sea foam, lavender paper - on white paper. The carved block is cut by a jigsaw and then reassembled on the letterpress bed and printed. The lines seen are the result of the cuts made by the jigsaw. The text reads, "the sky has no top/ in the blue and whit / who would know / standing outside / taking the time / drifting up / smoke from a fire / is lost from sight." Using this challenging method of woodcut printmaking, she has succeeded in creating the concept of incremental change with images to match her words. Her images are "will-o'-the-wisp" - amorphous shapes with the most delicate of boundaries, a thin, white line. An exploration of infinity and the ephemeral by this talented poet / print-maker.         DIVERGENT (True First, ARC, Advance Review Copy Signed By the Author with Her Full Name: "Veronica" Roth)

Harper, Collins 2011 - Roth, Veronica. DIVERGENT. New York: Harper Collins, (dated 2011, but actually released 2010). First Edition, first printing. A Fine copy (complete number line) of the original Advance Review Copy which appeared a full six months before the hardcover first printing was released. This example was signed by the author as "Veronica Roth" before she discovered that she could avoid writer's cramp by signing "V. Roth" and so you have something a little special here. This ARC looks unread but there is a tiny ding to the back panel so we're calling it Near Fine. First book in Roth's trilogy, there were very few ARCs compared to first printings and as far as we can tell from her blog, she didn't make an effort to sign ARCs in advance of her novel's initial publication. This particular copy was signed by her for one of the organizers of her Chicago appearances. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
