E.R. WEISS: THE TYPOGRAPHY OF AN ARTIST

Incline Press, Oldham 2011 - 4to. quarter parchment over paper covered boards, slipcase. 178, (4) pages. First edition and one of 300 numbered copies. Lovers of beautiful books, elegant design, and clear typography will be thrilled with this new volume about the book artist, Emil Rudolf Weiss. Weiss stands high in the pantheon of great book artists that includes William Morris, Bruce Rogers and Francis Meynell, among others, but because his work was mostly in Germany, he tends to be less well known in the English speaking world; certainly not much has been written about him or his work in English since the 1930s. Yet he was sufficiently regarded by Stanley Morison to be a guest designer for an issue of The Fleuron; another issue of which included an essay by Morison about Weiss ornaments. His Weiss-Antiqua typeface was particularly popular in the USA, mainly due to the availability for slug casting through Intertype matrices, and the publicity work of the Bauer Type Foundry office in New York. Today, most of us have, perhaps unknowingly, seen the digital version of Weiss roman, if not the original metal version. It remains a popular typeface, particularly in book work where one of its recent outings was on the dust-jacket of the US edition of The Da Vinci Code, and the UK edition of Revenge of the Mooncake Vixen. Jerry Cinamon studied graphic design at the Yale School of Art & Architecture, and first came across Weiss Initials while working in New York in the early 1960s. He had a long and successful career working at Penguin books, learning German after his retirement to produce his excellent biography of Rudolf Koch (Oak Knoll, 2000). Included are numerious pieces of ephemera and the prospectus. quarter parchment over paper covered boards, slipcase [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Circus The Artist As Saltimbanque

Shanty Bay Press, [Shanty Bay, ON Canada] 2011 - The book is hand-set using Deepdene on 200 gsm Arches cover, it is quarter bound in cloth and Somegami paper and is housed in a cloth-covered slipcase. It has been designed jointly by Janis Butler and Walter Bachinski. Four fill page pochoirs and eight multi-colored linocuts created and executed by Walter Bachinski. Printing on a Vandercook Universal 1 and binding were done by Janis Butler. There were 55 copies published. This one, number 30, signed by Walter Bachinski and Janis Butler on the Colophon page. With the original prospectus laid in; Many artists, writers, dancers, and musicians of the late 19th and early 20th centuries were drawn to the theme of the circus, often exploring the notion of the artist as a performer. Picasso & Cezanne, both of whom have influenced Bachinski, have made great circus paintings. He, himself, has used circus imaginery in many of his pastels and the circus has fascinated him ever since he was a little boy. The book contains a variety of writings from this area loosely based on the idea of the artist and the circus. The authors include Apollinaire, Beaumont, Baudelaire, Miller, Rilke and Twain. The excerpts are different in both style and content; they are funny, surreal, serious and poignant. Together with the illustrations the hope of ths artist was to evoke the richness of the circus experience, where there are three rings of simultaneous activity, within something different happening in each one First Edition; First Printing; Signed by Author [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        A COLLECTION.

1922 - 2011. - A once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire what is thought to be the most extensive collection of Mervyn Peake items in the world. This collection has been formed over a period of more than 30 years and consists of over 500 individual items. Of course, all the published books are represented in 1st Edition, but in addition there are a large number of variant issues, some previously unrecorded and some so far known only by a single example. There are subsequent edition, re-issues, foreign editions, paperbacks, proof copies, etc. This is the collection of a fanatical completist which means that multiple copies of some titles are present with small variances. At some stage even a completist had to stop however; copies of Swiss Family Robinson appear with a wide variety of coloured headbands so I stopped at half a dozen copies. But even some previously unknown variants are present: The Grey Walls Press edition of his Drawings is represented by 3 different issues; the Davis Poynter Edition of Drawings by 2 issues. In addition there are typescripts of three of his plays; The Cave, The Wit to Woo, and Those Wicked Doctors [the only known copy], all apparently agent?s copies. There are inscribed copies of Shapes and Sounds [Walter de la Mare?s copy], The Glassblowers, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, Mr Pye [with a lovely pen and ink illustration of a be-winged Mr Pye looking out to sea], Figures of Speech [with an additional illustration inserted which was not used in the published version], and the only signed copy of the Keepsake Press Poems I have seen, with the added bonus that it was Maurice Collis?s copy [he wrote the introduction], with a charming letter from Collis to his son recounting a meeting with Maeve. A copy of Bleak House [published posthumously], with an original illustration of Mr Turveydrop [actually two illustrations back to back], a variant of that used in the published version. A scrap-book with proof pulls for his illustrations for Grimm?s Household Tales [including three unused illustrations]. The very rare menu for a PEN dinner known in this single example; the rare wartime propaganda postcard, known in only two examples; a rare etching issued as a card known only in this single example; a large sheet of three illustrations printed by Cowell?s of Ipswich as a trial of their ?Plasticowell? process, known only in this example. A very large number of periodicals including his earliest published piece, printed when only 11 years old; rare issues of Pinpoints, Ballet, Eve?s Journal, as well as the more obvious Lilliput, London Mercury, etc. Exhibition catalogues from the 1930s to the present day; a large run of Christmas cards designed by Peake and signed by his wife Maeve; theatre programmes designed by Peake, a mint copy of the only bookplate designed by him; other ephemera. There are mock-ups and proofs for the Libanus Press editions of Alice and The Ancient Mariner and trials for the binding of the facsimile reprint of Captain Slaughterboard. There is not a detailed catalogue or listing available, prospective purchasers are invited to view the collection by prior appointment. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

As with the collages, each box varies in colors, but all are in the blue-purple-green palette. The text is hand- lettered in black Sumi ink in an Italic script by the artist. Both texts - the Emily Dickinson the more well-known - are complementary and both irresistible to any bibliophile. The text of the verse by Emily Dickinson (Verse 1263) reads:There is no Frigate like a BookTo take us Lands awayNor any Coursers like a PageOf prancing Poetry –This Traverse may the poorest takeWithout oppress of Toll –How Frugal is the ChariotThat bears the Human soul. The text of Theodore Parker's "The Book Lover" reads:A great book that comes froma great thinker – it is a ship of thought,deep-freighted with truth, with beauty too. It sails the ocean, driven by the winds of heaven, breaking the level seas of life into beautywhere it goes, leaving behind ita train of sparkling loveliness, widening as the ship goes on.And what a treasure it bringsto every land, scattering the seeds oftruth, justice, love, and piety,to bless the world in ages yet to come! Smoke.

[New York 2011 - Artist's book, one of 10 copies only, all on Somerset paper, each signed and numbered by author / artist, Sarah Plimpton. Page size: 11-3/4 x 15- 5/8 inches; 10pp. including titlepage and colophon. Bound: loose as issued in grey cloth over card stock envelope printed with author and title in dark grey on front panel. The ten pages, which are all original woodcuts, as well as the text printed letterpress in grey ink in Caslon, were accomplished by Sarah Plimpton with the assistance of Brad Ewing at The Grenfell Press. This is a "jigsaw" book; i.e. there are ten "jigsaw" woodcuts printed in pale, ephemeral colors - shades of yellow, grey, sea foam, lavender paper - on white paper. The carved block is cut by a jigsaw and then reassembled on the letterpress bed and printed. The lines seen are the result of the cuts made by the jigsaw. The text reads, "the sky has no top/ in the blue and whit / who would know / standing outside / taking the time / drifting up / smoke from a fire / is lost from sight." Using this challenging method of woodcut printmaking, she has succeeded in creating the concept of incremental change with images to match her words. Her images are "will-o'-the-wisp" - amorphous shapes with the most delicate of boundaries, a thin, white line. An exploration of infinity and the ephemeral by this talented poet / print-maker.         DIVERGENT (True First, ARC, Advance Review Copy Signed By the Author with Her Full Name: "Veronica" Roth)

Harper, Collins 2011 - Roth, Veronica. DIVERGENT. New York: Harper Collins, (dated 2011, but actually released 2010). First Edition, first printing. A Fine copy (complete number line) of the original Advance Review Copy which appeared a full six months before the hardcover first printing was released. This example was signed by the author as "Veronica Roth" before she discovered that she could avoid writer's cramp by signing "V. Roth" and so you have something a little special here. This ARC looks unread but there is a tiny ding to the back panel so we're calling it Near Fine. First book in Roth's trilogy, there were very few ARCs compared to first printings and as far as we can tell from her blog, she didn't make an effort to sign ARCs in advance of her novel's initial publication. This particular copy was signed by her for one of the organizers of her Chicago appearances. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Intimes Retraits.

Verdigris Press, Octon, France 2011 - Artist's book, one of 4 deluxe copies, from a total issue of 40, all on Hahnemulhe paper, each copy signed by the artist, Judith Rothchild and initialed by the author in pencil, as is the numbering. Page size: 6-1/4 x 8-1/4 inches; 20pp; printed on 5 folios. Bound: loose as issued, housed in grey wrappers printed in black, the whole in custom-made burgundy paper over boards clamshell box with black paper edges, title, author, artist, and press printed in black on spine with exposed grey cloth hinges. The deluxe edition contains one of the 4 four original copper plates used for the stunning mezzotints of interior scenes by Ms. Rothchild. Also included in the deluxe copy is an original pencil and ink wash drawing. This interior scene is mounted into the inside front cover of the clamshell box with the original copper plate mounted into the rear inside cover. Both are "framed" with hand marbled paper in deep grey with white inset. Seemingly a simple series of interiors, accompanied by words about the spaces, it is a very powerful "aide-memoire" - visualizing and verbalizing the power of rooms and the objects therein, bathed in their own peculiar light - to elicit memories / sensations all but forgotten. The artist tells us that the images were made from drawings at a friend's apartment. The parents of her friend established a bilingual journal in Paris, creating a literary circle with included Henry Miller and Lawrence Durrell. Temple friendship with the publishers dates from this time and endures through an almost familial relationship with their daughter, the artist's friend, whose apartment is depicted. The original pencil and wash composition is of another location entirely. This is one of the public rooms in the Grand Hotel in Sete, a port on the Mediterranean, about one hour from Octon, the home of Verdigris Press. The text is hand set in Vendome romain and printed letterpress by Mark Lintott, who also made the clamshell boxes. Each of the folios has been marbled in a most subtle shade of blue - delicate and yet full of life with swirls compelling one to open the folio to the mezzotint on the verso. This is a very beautiful book - elegant and restrained - just what one has come to expect from Judith Rothchild and Mark Lintott. See an Image. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

ADEVA Akademische Druck- u. Verlagsanstalt Graz/Austria, 2011. CODEX ROTUNDUS - A unique Book of Hours * To name the size of the Codex rotundus, one can hardly give height x width, but must determine the diameter of its pages. So the diameter (by the way: it is about 9 cm), because the pages and even the text mirrors are nearly circular. A round book - then and now an absolute rarity! * This Book of Hours was created in the form of a bibliophile unicum in the 15th century in Burgundy for Duke Adolph of Cleves and of the Mark (1425-1492). He was the nephew of Duke Philip the Good of Burgundy, married his illegitimate daughter Anne of Burgundy and has been Lieutenant General of the Netherlands for Charles the Bold. A flamboyant character, who lived and worked at the Burgundy court in the centre of the burgundy book painting. Today the manuscript is kept as Hs 728 in the Dombibliothek Hildesheim, Germany. * Title: Codex Rotundus * Owner / Shelf mark: Hs 728 ? Dombibliothek Hildesheim, Basilika St. Godehard (Hildesheim, Germany) * Theme: Private Devotion Books * Style: Renaissance * Date: End of 15th century * Origin: Bruges (Belgium) * Format: 9.3 cm in diameter * Extent: 226 pages * Language: Latin, French * Content: Book of Hours according to the use of Rome. Prayers and devotional texts for the edification of the laity in private use * Artists / Schools: "The painter of the Codex Rotundus", a unknown Burgundian master * Illustrations: Three full-page miniaturesand 30 historicized initials * Patron: Adolph of Cleves, Lord of Ravenstein (1425?1492) was the youngest son of Adolph I, Duke of Cleves and of his wife Marie of Burgundy, a sister of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy * Facsimile Edition * Publisher / Year: Adeva (Akademische Druck- und Verlagsanstalt), Graz - 2011 * Limited Edition: 480 copies * Volumes: Facsimile Edition: 1 volume * Commentary: 1 volume * Commentary: (German) by Dr. Bodo Brinkmann * Publisher's Price: 2,980 EUR * Binding: Hand-made red leather cover with three monogrammed clasps, which show extraordinarily stylized letters * Boxing: The edition is delivered in a joint case with acrylic cover * Condition: Mint copy *.

DER CODEX ROTUNDUS (1 Band Faksimile und 1 Kommentarband) in Schauvitrine - Faksimile der Handschrift Hs 728 der Dombibliothek zu Hildesheim - LIMITIERT auf nur 480 Exemplare

ADEVA Akademische Druck- u. Verlagsanstalt Graz/Austria, 2011.

WHILE MY FLOAT'S STILL COCKED: THE RAMBLINGS OF AN ARTIST-ANGLER.

Coch-y-Bonddu Books. Machynlleth, Powys. - 2011 1st edition de luxe. 4to. Pp160. Full page colour paintings & b&w drawings by the author. Full morocco gilt with handmade float inside. * De luxe Edition limited to 55 copies only, each copy signed & numbered by author. * "While My Float's Still Cocked, by Maurice 'My friends call me Mole' Pledger, is a beautifully illustrated fishing autobiography that is both a witty and whimsical recollection and a record of the successes of Maurice and his friends in pursuit of specimen perch, pike, carp and chub. It is a book about the evolution of an angler, the love of old and eccentric fishing tackle, and the personal quirks and foibles all fishermen suffer from. Above all, it is a book about the fun to be had catching (or just as often not catching) fish." De Luxe Edition - limited to 55 leather-bound copies, (only 50 for sale), signed by the author. Fine in slip-case. With a real float, hand-made and signed by Paul Cook, insert into the hand-marbled end-papers. Absolutely stunning! "The stories from Maurice's boyhood fizz with enthusiasm and there's no doubt that his early experiences and observations were the inspiration for his artistic life. However, what marks this book out as something special is the remarkable series of fish paintings, fish with so much natural beauty and grace that they almost swim off the page." Chris Yates. "All I can say is if you must read one angling book before you die, read this. It's thought provoking and amusing, but most of all, it's amazingly entertaining. A thoroughly good read, get a copy today. It will not disappoint." Jeff Woodhouse, fishingmagic. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
