"Water & Fire" (the puzzle): five irregular pieces that form an 8.5" square; intaglio prints and handmade paper by Sammy Seung-Min Lee. "Flesh" (book): 5.875 x 7.875"; 28 leaves. Dos-à-dos binding. Handmade papers by Ray Tomasso. Design and binding by Sammy Seung-Min Lee. Text in Korean by OkSang Lim. "Metal" (book): 8.5 x 7.875"; 20 pages. Metal cover and binding by Sammy Seung-Min ee. Art by OkSang Lim and Sammy Seung-Min Lee. "Soil" (box): monotype, mono prints, box design and construction by Sammy Seung-Min Lee. Studio SML/k: "The Soil was created in collaboration with a Seoul-based artist and activist OkSang Lim, best known as a Minjung artist. Minjung art is an artistic reaction against military dictatorship in S. Korea during 1980's. Since then Lim has been working with soil as both subject and artistic material. Through this project, both artists unfold the story of the soil as an elemental form, especially its interconnectedness with four sub elements, which are water, fire, metal, and flesh. "These four elements are represented inside a cubic space that acts as an abstraction of soil. Within, contrasting qualities of water and fire are represented on an intaglio print on hand-made paper while metal and flesh are expressed in the format of codex, each book containing narratives which incorporate Lim's art works and writings. Soil thus acts as a backdrop for all the other elements, providing a metaphorical context as it physically envelops each component. "South Korean artist Lim OkSang is best known for his sociopolitical Minjung installations throughout his native country. Throughout his career, Lim has worked energetically to listen and respond to the morals in nature and history, particularly from his generation. The resulting spirit of resistance in his art has exerted a positive influence on his nation's political maturation. Lim has been widely exhibited and collected in South Korea and around the world.

Picture Windows poems by Thordis Niela Simonsen

Denver, Colorado:: Studio SML/k,, 2011.. Edition of 3. 10 x 10.5", 28 pages. Free-end pages of Illusion Film. Bound in plexi-glass covers with wire edge binding. Intaglio, monoprint, and monotype printing processes. Design and binding by Sammy Seung-Min Lee. Studio SML/k: "Artist book edition about personal perspective, with poems by Thordis Simonsen." Sammy Lee: "Noticing the bold geometric silhouettes on various window coverings, I was struck one day by their alignment with adjacent exteriors ?- how they perfectly echoed shapes on, say, a nearby building or hedge. It was apparent that the artisans behind these grids had methodically created them to resemble existing surroundings, and I wondered if I did something similar when shaping my own outlook. Reminded of routine tendencies to seek the similar, this book thus explores the process of looking beyond traditional confines, searching for the new and unfamiliar.

        When We Were Birds

Denver, Colorado:: Judy Anderson,, 2011.. Second edition of 10. 4 x 6 x 2.5"; 160 pages plus endsheets. Archival full color printing on 190 gsm watercolor paper. Set in Jensen and Frutiger type. Photographic images. Sewn and cased into wood covers. Signed by both artists. Numbered. Image pages feature photographed details from a group of artists' books created by Judy Anderson and featuring poems by Ginny Hoyle. The first edition volumes were bound as wall-mounted sculptures. This second edition is perfect bound with wood covers. Colophon: "We are two women, two friends, moving into our 60s on a tide of energy that feels both fierce and benevolent. We are kindred spirits who share a certain world view and speak of it in distinctly different voices, each one shining a light on the other. There is, for both of us, a sense of heightened clarity, a sharper focus that seems to be feeding our work now. When We Were Birds expresses that energy. We have been collaborating on artist book projects and installations since 1987. When We Were Birds is a shared reflection on the last 25 years, an expression of lamentation and praise for the human condition, as seen through the filter of our eyes and experience." Judy Anderson: "The sculpted books are comprised of fragments of my work, culled from the last 25 years, and rebuilt as sculptural codex volumes that bind together pieces of experience to capture the process of learning and becoming that has made me who I am. There is something freeing about tearing up things you have carefully preserved and making something altogether new from the pieces. The prints and paintings, and the bird books are wholly new, too, alive with light, and in many cases, vibrant color after years of a more somber palette." Ginny Hoyle: "When We Were Birds traces an arc of human experience from birth to maturity ?- Judy and I both turn 64 this year. And on that frame I have placed poems and prose to add texture, music, and narrative relevant to our experience now ?- living, learning, and creating on the other side of 60: 'a time to rise on homemade wings and praise this juicy day. So much to forgive. So much to regret. So much to lose. So much to love before the light fades.

Mountains & Religion wood engravings and book design by Richard Wagener

Petaluma, California:: Mixolydian Editions,, 2011.. Edition of 40. 7 x 11.25 x .5"; 32 leaves. Letterpress printed with Monotype Bembo. Printed on handmade Yamagampi paper. Bound using handmade Lokta paper from Nepal over light boards. Laid in a wrap-around of Japanese silk Genji cloth and Kyoseishi paper. Mountains & Religion, a collection of twenty wood engravings, is based upon a journey to Nepal and Tibet in the autumn of 1995. The images are from the Kathmandu valley, up the Kali Gandaki valley on the Annapurna region of Nepal, then to Lhasa, Shigatse, and the countryside of Tibet. This visual documentation contains the expected mountain vistas, but just as compelling is the architecture of the human spirit - the monasteries, the temples, the public squares. Wagener's choice of slightly cream-colored, velvety paper is an effective for the deep blacks and subtle gradations of tone in his engravings. The supple cloth-like pages are in marked contrast to the solidity of the scenes, but the combination seems apt for a collection titled Mountains & Religions. The engravings are accompanied by excerpts from The Snow Leopard by Peter Matthiesen, My Journey to Lhasa by Alexandra David-Neel, and In the Himalayas by Jeremy Bernstein.

A Gocco printer used for everything but the landscape, which was color-copied. Bound in illustrated cloth-covered boards. Laid in four-fold illustrated black cloth wrap with button and thread closure. Drawn, hand-cut, written, assembled and bound by the artist. Signed and numbered. Lois Morrison, colophon: "This book is based on a fortunate mis-reading of Temple Grandlin's writing about friendships between giraffes, among others, Aeolian. Aeolus is the god of winds so they must be the most delicately beautiful creatures on the African plains. Re-reading the passage, I realized the word was Angolan, but by then it was too late, the image had taken hold.

Oddballs The Remarkable True Stories of Forty Unique, Strange, Peculiar, Extraordinary & Generally Odd People, Told in Prose and Wood Engravings

Vancouver, British Columbia:: Heavenly Monkey Press,, 2011.. Edition of 30 plus 5 hors de commerce copies.. 8 x 12.5"; 98 pages. Etchings printed by Westergard on Zerkall paper, and tipped on to verso pages in the book, with the biographical sketches on the facing rectos. Text set in Dante and Dante Titling and printed (damp) by Rollin Milroy at Heavenly Monkey on dampened Guarro laid paper with a Washington press. Includes, as a frontis, a new self-portrait engraving by Westergard. Bound by Claudia Cohen in Japanese cloth. Introduction by Barry Moser. This is hors de commerce copy #2. Heavenly Monkey Press: "Between 2005 and 2009, Jim Westergard created a series of 40 wood engravings of curious and infamous historical personages, all with his characteristic combination of technical mastery and mischief. Lawn-chair pilot Larry Walters, Pope Joan, Aussie outlaw Ned Kelly, Gunnlaug Wormtongue, George Adamski (kindly appearing opposite) and cannon-fodder Hunter S. Thompson are just a few of Jim's subjects, each portrait accompanied by a brief biographical text written with the same wry sense of humor that informs his engravings." Rollin Milroy: "Although Jim has been making wood engravings for over four decades, and they have been reproduced in numerous trade publications, this is only the second book to feature prints pulled from his original blocks. The first was Mother Goose Eggs, which he published himself in 2003. It was also his crashcourse in letterpress printing, and for a first effort he succeeded admirably. But it also convinced him he didn't want to do it again, which is partly how and why he and heavenly Monkey came together for Oddballs." Barry Moser, introduction: "I don't know how Westergard does it, but he has an uncanny ability to pull humor out of that dastardly valley of shadows. Despite the dark odds against him, he manages, again and again, to wrangle some of the funniest wood engravings I have ever seen.

Vancouver, British Columbia:: Heavenly Monkey Press,, 2011.. Edition of 30. 6.25 x 12.25" closed, opens to 19"; 3 panels. Tri-fold. Set in Dante. Printed in three colors on dampened Arches Cover. Bound in black bookcloth. Edition of 30 with 1 - 10 triptych, 11 -30 broadside. This is the triptych version. Heavenly Monkey Press: "The text used for this broadside was originally written to accompany a catalogue for an exhibition of Atsuhi's work, which did not end up happening. When HM's interest in working with Sylvian was expressed (through the kindness of Harold Budd), he sent Uncommon Deities, and asked Atsushi to create some original drawings for inclusion. The result is [a] broadside, printed in an edition of 30 numbered and 4 A.P. copies. "The sheet measures 22 x 15 inches. The sheets are signed by Sylvian and Atsushi (under their printed names), and numbered by the artist. The first 10 copies in the edition were trimmed into thirds (each measuring 6 x 12.5 inches), and laid into a triptych portfolio case ... made by Claudia Cohen, with two inset labels." David Sylvian (born David Alan Batt, 23 February 1958) is an English singer-songwriter and musician, who records on his own Samadhi sound label. Atsushi Fukui was born in 1966, in Aichi prefecture, Tokyo, Japan. In 1989, he completed his B.A. in oil painting at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Pamphlet: 12.9 x 9.5"; 8 pages; handsewn binding. Prints: 9.5 x 13"; 12 pages; double-sided accordion structure; lithography and woodcut on a Cuban atlas. Wraparound cloth-covered case with magnet closure. Steven Daiber: "In 2010 while working in the Taller Experimental de la Grafica, I overprinted the 1978 Atlas of Cuba, a volume published for the twentieth anniversary of the Cuban Revolution incorporating antique images found on lithographic stones at the taller. These found images are record of both the advertising and the tobacco industry in Cuba at the turn of the twentieth century. "Pages of the accordion book are attached with hinges printed from the Mambi tobacco label celebrating the Cuban Calvary of the 1898 War for Independence (Spanish-American War) along with images from Christmas wrapping paper ?- snow covered trees and all. On the verso, the pages are printed with the soles of shoes found abandoned on city streets. Essay by Norberto Marrero Pírez (English translation by Yudania Monés): "It is neither the bather clinging to the sand, nor the sun radiating tons of silence. It is not even the wind enveloping everything with tits ravenous caresses. It is perhaps the night in which, gagged by the stillness of the stars, that very bather clinging to the sand drinks from a slow and dark stream. Everything is less painful; any defeat is easier to bear within silence. And since all bearable things are eternal, so is the dream of that bather clinging to the sand, his eyes examining the horizon, relishing the calmness of the waters, once again before the immensity of his dream.

I Sail My Ship of Dreams

Redmond, Washington:: Mari Eckstein Gower,, 2011.. One-of-a-Kind. A custom-made book-like structure (6 x 8.5") with tie closure opens to reveal a Moleskine® Japanese Accordion Album (3.5 x 5.625", 32 pages) lying in a cavity. The accordion opens to 10' (pre-folded paper) on which Gower has created original images, using black and colored ink pens. Mari Eckstein Gower: "Unlike most of my book projects, this piece started with words. The phrase, 'I sail my ship of dreams,' embedded itself in my thoughts and refused to leave. Then came the image of a lady of the French court with an abundant powdered wig and sailing ship. Like many dream images, the combination of words and the French lady seemed a logical combination. "At that time I'd chanced upon a vintage book about the history of theatre. The idea of dreams being a theatre - or theatre being a dream - made perfect sense to me. So I let the images unfold and, as with a dream, I trusted that the underlying logic would unfold.

        13 Tattoos

Alstead, New Hampshire:: Bird Press,, 2011.. Edition of 25. 15.5 x 5.25"; 16 leaves. Woodblock prints. Photopolymer letterpress details. Printed on handmade Richard de Bas paper. Bound in red and black paper wraps with handsewn binding. Laid in four flap black and white paper wrapper. Signed and numbered by the artist. Thorsten Dennerline: "Some time ago I suddenly got the urge to make a book about tattoos. I decided to think about tattoos not just as pictures or designs, but to consider them more broadly (scars, living drawing marks, body adornments, rites of passage, magic to improve the body?'s function, ways to relieve or relive pain, signs of bravery, remembrances, cultural signifiers, or tribal/group markings). I also thought of the idea of drawing on skin and marking its surface as a way to be aware of it as a three-dimensional picture plane (with psychological implications). I have to admit that the associations with crime and other 'bad' things was enticing to me as well. This book of tattoo proposals is simply a non-linear document of my own thinking about these ideas.

        Crossing the Tigris

Stevens Point, Wisconsin:: Arcadian Press / sailorBOYpress / Seven Hills Press,, 2011.. Edition of 60. 6.75 x 10.5 x 2" box containing three books each with 36 pages. Letterpress printed. Type: Plantin. Collage and inclusion elements. Handmade paper. Handsewn binding. Four sided drop letterfold container with twine tie closure. Jeff Morin: "A narrative in three books recounting soldier's stories from the Iraq War. This is a collaborative project between Jeffrey Morin, Caren Heft, and Brian Borchardt. The collaborators each found stories in the media that recount horrific situations that are inconceivable to those who work regularly with current or former soldiers who happen to be students or artists." Statement by the presses: "The container for this collaboration is meant to embody the conundrum of this person who transforms into a beast capable of horrendous acts against innocents. The outside of the container is collaged in the same way that a boy might decorate his hiding place for treasures found. The elements, like currency, targets, or stamps, are in the realm of childhood values. The inside of the container sets the stage for juvenile battle. These are the props for pretend war. When confronted with the grittiness of war, do these ill-prepared young men simply break with reality? Are they taught that they are above the law? Or do they learn to devalue what is not obviously American? Neither the container nor the three books answer the questions posed above. We all know young soldiers who have served or those who could serve. This collaboration is intended to catalyze a conversation about the nature of change that allows potentially decent people to commit indecent acts.

Tempe, Arizona:: Cabbagehead Press,, 2011.. Edition of 30. 7.5 x 9.25" closed; 7.5 x 140" extended. Accordion book with leatherbound covers. Letterpress and relief on shaped, variable paper handmade from the clothing of landmine victims, minefield plant fibers, and currency of mine-producing nations. Printed two sides in ten sections. Paper title label on front cover. Signed and numbered by the artist. John Risseeuw: "The subject is landmines and landmine victims. From 2001-2007, The Paper Landmine Print Project involved making paper and printing landmine images, facts, and stories of victims on it. In hand papermaking, we make paper from cotton, linen, or silk clothing - rags - as well as plant fibers and other sources of cellulose. I collected articles of clothing from landmine victims (this means only a representative piece of clothing - something the person wore - not from the accident itself), fibrous plants from mine locations, and shredded paper currencies of nations that use or make landmines. "I visited Cambodia, Bosnia-Herezgovina, and Mozambique to gather background information, interview victims, obtain donations of clothing from some, speak with deminers, and take photographs. Through contacts, clothing and information sent from Northern Iraq, Nicaragua, and Angola were obtained. In addition to fifteen relief prints on handmade paper, a series of dimensional paper pulp castings were made and now this book on paper made from clothing, fibers, and papers left over from the prints. "This artist's book, hand printed on shaped, variable, handmade paper, summarizes and updates the prints with data from the Landmine Monitor and other sources. The twin purposes have been always public education to the problems fundraising for the organizations that assist the victims. Proceeds from the sale of this work have been and will continue to be donated to the Landmine Survivors Network Cambodian Handicraft Association for Landmine and Polio Disable, Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation, Mines Advisory Group, Adopt-A-Minefield, and Handicap International. To date, over $22,000 has been raised.

        Memories of Egypt

Irvine, California:: Amandine Nabarra-Piomelli,, 2011.. Edition of 40. 10 x 8.675 x 1"; 12 pages. Modified double-sided accordion structure. One side has two Italian map folds, each sitting in the valley fold of the main structure. The other side is a more conventional accordion with 6 panels of photographs sitting in the valley fold of the main structure. Printed offset. Both covers treated with a sand texture and embossed. Book in cloth-covered custom box with snap closure and paper title label that contains a smaller hard-sided pop-up holder that book slips into. Colophon: "This book is made of two maps, Northern and Southern Egypt, as well as a photo album of selected views of the Bazaars in Luxor and Cairo. It is based on a fascinating journey through an historical land of sand, desert, and lush river bands, busy cities, and quiet villages." Amandine Nabarra-Piomelli: "It is a book that has no beginning and no end. The reader starts reading turn the book read again and turn it again. The covers of the book are treated so the water is smooth and glossy and the background is like sand. The book is based on two main colors: blue for the Nile river and yellow for the sand/desert. The maps are in origami to give the impression of jumping at the reader (the idea is that it is always a discovery to travel but it is also difficult to understand a new culture/country). "This book tries to convey the explosion of information that overwhelms and fascinate travelers like me who visit Egypt for the first time. The photo-montages as well as the loop structure of the book demonstrate how difficult it is to connect all the information pertaining to the area: geographically (with the maps of Northern and Southern Egypt, made from aerial maps) and culturally (the series of photographs of bazaars). Since the majority of the territory is desert, the book's covers have been treated to allow the reader to feel the roughness of the sand and the smoothness of the water. Memories of Egypt is a yellow (the desert) and blue (the river) book that will carry the reader on a tactile and visual trip along the Nile.

Santa Barbara, California:: Simplemente Maria Press,, 2011.. Edition of 20. 12.5 x 12.5 x 2.5?" with box, book (22 leaves), and chapbook (18 pages). Letterpress printed in Centaur. Printed on translucent abaca paper interleaved with mixed media images of acrylic and pigment on paper. Bound between handpainted covers, textured with hints of a fingerprint, with leather spine. Placed in a wooden box with a tumbled marble lid. Binding and printing by John Balkwill. A poem, paintings and sketchbook ?- an excavation of images and impressions from Patagonia. The larger book, Unearthed, rests in a box of straight-grain pine accented with paduak or wenge wood. The book is covered by a fitted lid of tumbled travertine marble (about 11.5" square). Each book's cover is individually painted and signed. Within the book, the poem ?"Unearthed?" is letterpress printed. a line or three at a time. on sheets of handmade abaca paper plus one sheet of ochre-pigmented kozo paper. These printed sheets are interleaved with eight mixed-media prints from the Unearthed: Patagonia series of paintings. A journal chapbook, notes from below, rests in a niche in the wooden box's bottom. Ink and graphite sketches of vessels accompany journal entries, and are printed on Khadi cotton rag paper hand made in Tamil Nadu, India. The chapbook?'s terra cotta paper cover is imprinted with a line drawing of a fingerprint. Mary Heebner: "The origin of this project began with two consecutive trips to Chilean Patagonia. Riding horses through the rugged terrain of the Patagonian sierra, we came upon middens and petrified remnants of ancient forests. In Last Hope Sound, Puerto Natales, I sketched a collection of messen, indigenous Mapuche amphoras and ceremonial vessels. Later, in my Santa Barbara studio I made two series?' of paintings: 'Below and Beneath' and 'Unearthed.' This book draws upon them and my travel journals.?" Charles Donelan, Santa Barbara Independent, April 5, 2011, "Poetic Pots": "'Geography is fate,' proclaims artist and poet Mary Heebner in notes from below, part two of her new project called Unearthed. It?'s a conclusion that Heebner has come to the hard way, through years of study, travel, art making, and spiritual questing. Rooted in her experiences camping in the mountains of Patagonia on the border between Chile and Argentina, Unearthed combines Heebner?'s skill as a printmaker with her painting. … Offered as a limited edition of 20 in a beautifully handcrafted case, the two artist?'s books Heebner has made out of her paintings, prints, and sketches of messen (indigenous Mapuche amphorae and ceremonial vessels) include her original writing, as well as her art. … 'the earth is a vessel containing everything, even that which is only dreamed or unbuilt.' The text for the smaller volume, notes from below, reflects a lifetime of interest in the deep time of archaeology. For Heebner, the entire project came together through the philosophical interest she found in ancient pots she handled as a visitor to Puerto Natales, Last Hope Fjord, Patagonia. Describing their significance, she elaborated an understanding of human growth as a complex process of balancing inner forces with context, and nature with nurture. Heebner told me that the subject of vessels mattered to her because she wanted to communicate 'the sense that you?'re formed from the inside out and from the outside in. … I imagine it as a kind of pressure ?- just like what a potter does with her hands ?- two forces blending from the inside and the outside simultaneously to force something up.
