Torgerson, Eugenie
Niles, MI: Eugenie Torgerson, 2009. Hardcover. UNIQUE ARTISTS' BOOK. Eugenie Torgerson is a book artist, photographer, printer, and illustrator from Michigan. She has been represented by art galleries across the U.S, and her work can be found in many corporate collections. In her artist's statement she says: "I build book and box forms with traditional bookbinding materials and methods. These sculptural objects contain my own pastel drawings and imagery generated from my own photographs. The stories they tell are contained in my words and the poetry of Kevin McCue. My subjects are the allure of the horizon, the power of the land, the experience of loss, and the sweetness of redemption." This exceptional book object comprises three individual parts. There is a small illustrated book with short poems that rests open on a box stand. The book and stand are covered by a box with a glass window on the top. Each object has been meticulously and creatively designed and produced using Ms. Torgerson's art, photography, and writing. The book is 3 inches wide x 4 inches tall x 3.5 inches thick. The poems are printed on vellum paper and coated with shellac, and the images are printed on various interesting papers. The book is bound in silver cloth with silver metal medallions on the front and back, and black and white beads around the edges. The spine is of brown suede and also has small beads sewn on. The book rests in a cradle at the top of its box stand. The stand is 5 inches tall and 9 x 10 inches at the base. The cradle is covered in green/gold cloth and decorated paper. 2009. In Gold, dynamic photographs capture the spirit that led to the triumph and glory of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey team, images that transcend their frozen moment in time by allowing us to recall the energy and excitement of those magical days in Lake Placid. Then, through personal thoughts and quotes gathered more than thirty years later, we are allowed a glimpse into the minds of the young American men who carried the nation to new heights. We come to know how those experiences shaped these men and their perspectives on life, culture and history. Gold is not a play-by-play account of hockey games played decades ago, nor is it a narrative crafted from the point of view of any one player or commentator. It is, rather, an insightful recounting of a very special moment in the history of sports. It is a series of thoughts and reflections that define the meaning of those games, of those times, as told by those who were the closest to the action: the players themselves. Their thoughts, and those of sportscaster Al Michaels in his Introduction and President Jimmy Carter in his Afterword, cast this event in an important new light. While the players and the culture have changed drastically in the years since 1980, the recollection of those days remains as sharply focused as ever. Gold reveals how the tremendous cultural impact of that particular Olympic victory still resonates with us, articulating clearly just what that moment in the nation's history really meant. Gold is a hand-crafted, fine press book published by Legacy Editions, a sister imprint of 21st Editions. It is me … [Click Below for Full Description]

San Diego: Bay Park Press / False Bay Editions, 2009. Number 12 of 20 copies. An exquisite production fr. Hardcover. Number 12 of 20 copies. Founded by Sibyl Rubottom and Jim Machacek in 2000, the Bay Park Press produces artists' books, offers classes, and holds book arts' exhibitions. Their books address a wide range of subjects from the universe to gardening to opera to Yiddish and more. Most are letterpress printed, many have moveable pieces, and all are illustrated. It includes 14 unbound folded folio sized leaves that are housed in a folding case. Twelve of the leaves are dedicated to different types of gardens, each in a different color, with designs and writings to reflect that garden. The gardens are: Japanese, butterfly, desert, night, orchid, primordial, mystical, rose, water, Eros, secret, and herb. Each features a poem or prose by such writers as John Milton, Rumi, Homer, Lord Byron, Robert Frost, Oscar Wilde, Frances Hodgson Burnett, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. The two other folded leaves are for the title and for the colophon. Printed on Fabriano Rosapina Blanco paper in Venus, Edwardian Script, and Palatino typefaces using letterpress, monoprint, and intaglio techniques. Satin, Claire Jeanine
Dania Beach, FL, 2009. Artist's book, unique, part of an on-going series of unique books called PENTIMENTO, referencing interpenetration, transparency and indeterminacy. This book printed on acetate with silver, gold, and neon cerise ink and metallic overprinting. Page size: 11 x 8.5 inches; 40pp; (10 sheets). Bound by the artist: 32 pieces of clear monofilament with attached glass and metal beads (2 strands through each of 16 holes) and letters in acetate or metal spelling MARKING TIME, monofilament at spine; monofilament untrimmed and about 6 inches long; small (1-3/8 x 1-1/8-inch acetate card lettered by artist with title and signed and dated; attached with monofilament; housed in custom-made black cloth over boards clamshell box made to house book open. Due to the use of transparent pages, all pages are presented simultaneously, resulting in the reader / viewer seeing the entire book at once. The book is meant to be displayed standing up with pages fanned out rounding the book's shape. The text and images are generated and manipulated images from an 1880's experiment in a physics book. Numbers morph into letters which, in turn, form sayings about time (Time Is Money, Time Warp, In Record Time, etc.) as a result of "passing through" scientific equipment. Each page is ringed with sayings which also appear coming out of glass beakers etc. Small clocks with various times surround the pages as well. The fleeting and ephemeral nature of time is made palpable with the artist's images and words. A work of imagination that entices the reader / viewer to reconsider the meaning of … [Click Below for Full Description]

TASCHEN, 2009. Condition: Like New. Book Condition: Fine/ExcellentClamshell Case: Fine/ExcellentOriginal shipping box is available. Limited edition monograph of works by Christopher Wool. This is #0416 in an edition of 1100 copies (Includes Art Edition of 100 copies). The book is numbered and signed by Christopher Wool. The monograph was published in 2008 by TASCHEN. The book is in Fine/excellent condition as is the the custom clamshell case. From the publisher: "Best known for his text-based paintings including Trbl and Riot, Christopher Woolmade his name in the '80s and hasn't looked back, constantly expanding his repertoire of verbal possibility, patterns, and media. With more than 500 pages, this sizable monograph includes production Polaroids, installation shots, and impeccable artwork reproductions to document his upfront and ever-inquisitive oeuvre. In your face, achingly simple, deceptively frank, the work of Christopher Wool is so very New York. Though he owes a debt to Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art, he completely transcends these genres. Whether it's a text-based painting or an abstract spray-painted piece, Wool questions painting, like many other artists in his generation, but he doesn't provide any easy answers. As one piece proclaims, "The harder you look the harder you look." Wool became known in the mid-1980s through all-over paintings produced with rubber rollers commonly used to simulate decorative wallpaper patterns on walls. By 1988 he had hit stride with his dry, dead-pan word paintings ("Trbl," "Riot," "Sell the House, Sell the Car, Sell the Kids") … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stegner, Wallace; Berry, Wendell (Dedication); Stegner, Lynn
Red Butte Press, 2009. Moser, Barry. Limited Edition. Hardcover. No. 60 of 125 copies, folio size, 23 pp. Fine. Wallace Earle Stegner (1909-1993) was a novelist, short story writer, and enviornmentalist; often called "The Dean of Western Writers", he was a member of the faculty at Stanford University and founded its creative writing program. The Stegner Fellowship program at Stanford was named in his honour, and he is a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in 1972 and the U.S. National Book Award in 1977. First published in "The Atlantic" in 1959, "To a Young Writer" is an essay in which Stegner offers courage to writers beginning in the field, and offers an assessment of the difficulties and rewards of serious writing. In the essay, he writes, "You are scheduled -- doomed -- to be a serious writer regarding life seriously and reporting it to a small audience." This is not meant to scare new writers away from writing, but rather to encourage writers in their calling, in their craft, and to continue the lineage of great writing like those that have come before. This gorgeous publication by the Red Butte Press includes a dedication by American novelist and poet Wendell Berry (b. 1934), a recipient of The National Humanities Medal, much of whose fiction centres on a small, fictinalised, Kentucky town (in a similar vein to William Faulkner), and an introduction by Lynn Stegner, daughter-in-law of Wallace Stegner, a novelist herself who provides well-articulated insight to the life and beliefs of Wallace Stegner, as he spent his life as a devoted teacher and writer. Included also are … [Click Below for Full Description]

It is me … [Click Below for Full Description]

de Cervantes, Miguel; Grossman, Edith (Translator); Wiley,
The Arion Press, 2009. Wiley, William T. Limited Edition. Leather. Volumes I and II, number 28 of 400 copies, 1208 pp. total, signed by artist William T. Wiley in both volumes, with both prospectuses. Fine. The story that many consider to be the earliest novel written and a seminal work of Western literature, the tragi-comical figure of Don Quixote and his faithful companion Sancho Panza have become part of our culture, as has the phrase "tilting at windmills". First published in 1605, "Don Quixote" has been printed throughout the centuries; this magnificent edition by the Arion Press "stands as one of the major accomplishments of the Press" (n. b., from the Arion Press web site). Lavishly illustrated by William T. Wiley, who has exhibited at the Venice Biennial, the de Young Museum (San Francisco), and the Corcoran Gallery of Art (D.C.) - for this set, Wiley produced forty-two illustrations for volume I and fifty-five for volume II. The Edith Grossman translation is considered to be the unsurpassed version in English. The work required to produce this work must have been intensive; in his cover letter to subscribers, Andrew Hoyem wrote "Please be patient. Cervantes has had to wait over four hundred years for this treatment of and homage to his masterpiece. You will not have to wait that long." Accompanying this set are the prospectuses for both volumes ("Prospectus for a deluxe limited edition of Don Quixote..." and "Announcing the completion of..."), the cover letter which accompanied the initial prospectus, and a card, in colour, that shows an extra print by William T. W … [Click Below for Full Description]
