        'Loading Wool'

A colour linocut on paper (image size 151 x 230 mm; paper size 165 x 243 mm), with the edition number (85/100), title and artist's signature in ink in the lower margin. The paper is moderately foxed, but this is really only noticeable in the narrow margins because of the black, olive green and brown colours of the print; in excellent condition, unmounted as issued. 'In the late 1930s Warner designed a series of linocuts which were cut by his daughter and printed by his son. These works were signed "The Warners"' (from the introduction by Roger Butler, National Gallery of Australia, to the catalogue of works by Warner published by Josef Lebovic Gallery in 2009).

Towards 'an English Fourth' Fragments and echoes of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, 1918-21, copy #100 of the quarter-goatskin limited edition

Fordingbridge, Hampshire: Castle Hill Press, 2009. First and Limited edition. Quarter Leather. This scarce limited edition publishes T. E. Lawrence's early writings about the history of the Arab Revolt. The publisher is Castle Hill Press, the premier editors and fine press publishers of material by and about T. E. Lawrence, founded by Lawrence's official biographer, Jeremy Wilson (1944-2017). Towards ‘an English Fourth' gathers surviving notes, articles and drafts that reflect the two early manuscripts of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, neither of which survives. Specifically, this textually unique volume contains seventeen surviving accounts of the Arab Revolt, or aspects of it, that Lawrence wrote between October 1918 and August 1921. There were only 227 copies of this edition, of which 150 copies were bound in quarter crimson goatskin with cream canvas sides, head and tail bands, and top edge gilt.  The volume was issued in a tan, laid paper slipcase. This copy is #100, hand-numbered thus by the publisher on the title page verso limitation statement. We acquired this copy from the original subscriber and the original purchase receipt is laid in. This copy is in truly fine, as-new condition. The slipcase is mildly sunned but otherwise fine. T. E. Lawrence (1888-1935) found fame as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia." This time defined Lawrence with indelible experience and celebrity which he would spend the rest of his famously short life struggling to reconcile and reject, to recount and repress. Lawrence told the tale of this time in Seven Pillars of Wisdom, a work with a tortuous writing, editing, and publishing history culminating in posthumous publication. (Only a limited Subscriber's edition and a heavily edited and abridged version were published during Lawrence's lifetime.) The title of Towards an English Fourth is taken from a passage in a 26 August 1922 letter from T. E. Lawrence to English literary editor, writer, and critic Edward Garnett: "Do you remember my telling you once that I collected a shelf of 'Titanic' books . . . and that they were The Karamazovs, Zarathustra, and Moby Dick. Well, my ambition was to make an English fourth." From the editor's Introduction: "During the period 1919-22 T.E. Lawrence's intellectual and creative powers were at their zenith. At the Peace Conference, in Whitehall and at All Souls he mixed with some of the most brilliant men and women of his time. His personal outlook was informed by two cultures. His opinions drew on an extraordinary range of experience, and on first-hand knowledge of the peoples of the Middle East. His writings during this period show a breadth of analysis unparalleled in anything he wrote before or afterwards. In Seven Pillars of Wisdom and in essays like 'The Changing East' and 'Evolution of a Revolt' you can see the calibre of mind that impressed contemporaries such as Winston Churchill, Arnold Toynbee and Lionel Curtis. These qualities are surely one of the reasons why Seven Pillars of Wisdom has had such enduring appeal."

A Means to Freedom: The Letters of H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard

Hippocampus Press:, New York 2009 - First editions, Hardcovers, Two volumes, Limited, Fine in dust jackets, "H. P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard are two of the titans of weird fiction of their era. Dominating the pages of Weird Tales in the 1920s and 1930s, they have gained worldwide followings for their compelling writings and also for the very different lives they led. The two writers came in touch in 1930, when Howard wrote to Lovecraft via Weird Tales. A rich and vibrant correspondence immediately ensued. Both writers were fascinated with the past, especially the history of Roman and Celtic Britain, and their letters are full of intriguing discussions of contemporary theories on this subject. Gradually, a new discussion came to the fore-a complex dispute over the respective virtues of barbarism and civilization, the frontier and settled life, and the physical and the mental. Lovecraft, a scion of centuries-old New England, and Howard, a product of recently settled Texas, were diametrically opposed on these and other issues, and each writes compellingly of his beliefs, attitudes, and theories. The result is a dramatic debate-livened by wit, learning, and personal revelation-that is as enthralling as the fiction they were writing at the time. All the letters have been exhaustively annotated by the editors."

'The Mint' and Later Writings About Service Life The finely bound limited issue, hand-numbered copy #18, one of 50 bound thus in full goatskin, with felt-lined slipcase and content exclusive to this full goatskin issue

Fordingbridge, Hampshire: Castle Hill Press, 2009. Hand-Numbered Limited Edition. Full Leather. This Castle Hill Press limited, finely bound, hand-numbered edition publishes the original (1928) text of The Mint, together with significant "Later Writings about Service Life" and additional unpublished material. Of a total edition of 277 printed for subscribers, just 50 copies were issued thus, unique in both binding and content. These 50 are bound in full blue-grey goatskin with raised spine bands, head and foot bands, gilt edges, silk ribbon marker, and dark grey laid paper end sheets with a letterpress seaplane design. The Uxbridge chapters are printed on gray paper, while the Service chapters and the Later Writings About Service Life, and Uxbridge and Cranwell Notes (unique to the full goatskin copies) are printed on white paper. The limitation page is hand-numbered and the publisher's Introduction is hand-signed. The pale blue cloth covered slipcase is lined in dark blue felt. This copy is hand-numbered “18” on the copyright page. We acquired this copy from the original subscriber and the original purchase receipt is laid in. Condition is truly fine, the binding and contents pristine. The slipcase is near fine, with no appreciable wear, marred only by some minor toning. The Mint is T. E. Lawrence's unstintingly candid portrait about life in Royal Air Force ranks. Thomas Edward Lawrence (1888-1935) found fame as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia." This time defined Lawrence with indelible experience and celebrity which he spent the rest of his famously short life struggling to reconcile and reject, to recount and repress. Lawrence told the tale of this time in Seven Pillars of Wisdom, a work with a tortuous writing, editing, and publishing history culminating in posthumous publication. Perhaps equally tortuous is the tale of how this story about the R.A.F. was written and published. In a state of nervous exhaustion following the First World War, his work on the post-war settlement, and writing and re-writing Seven Pillars of Wisdom, in 1922, Lawrence enlisted in the ranks of the R.A.F. under the name of John Hume Ross. He swiftly concluded "there is grand stuff here, and if I could write it..." so he began making notes "scribbled at night, between last post and lights out, in bed." In January 1923 his identity became public and he was discharged from the R.A.F., but allowed to re-enlist two and a half years later, this time using the surname "Shaw", under which he had meanwhile served in the Tank Corps. On re-enlistment, he resumed making notes. In 1927, while serving in Karachi, Lawrence arranged these notes into a manuscript which he circulated to a small number of people, including Air Marshal Hugh Trenchard. As with Seven Pillars of Wisdom, publishers were eager, but Lawrence resisted, in part due to Trenchard's concerns. A saga followed in which efforts were made to control publication via uncirculated copyright editions in both the U.S. and Britain; the book remained unavailable to the public. Lawrence made revisions in the last months of his life with a possible view to publication in a private edition (as he had done with the 1926 Subscriber's Edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom), but the work remained unpublished until 1955, after the death of an officer described unfavorably in the text. Even then, the British edition blanked out objectionable words and substituted name changes to avoid libel. This spectacular limited edition of The Mint is the most comprehensive and elaborate yet published, containing “the full 1928 text of The Mint, together with a selection of Lawrence's later writings about his life in the ranks... The narrative of Lawrence's RAF years therefore begins in 1922 and ends with his retirement in February 1935... The result is a far more interesting version of Lawrence's second book..."

        Three Gorges Dam Migration

JI, YUN FEI. Three Gorges Dam Migration. Woodcut scroll, composition (image): 13 3/8 x 120 11/16" (34 x 306.5 cm); sheet (full sheet): 17 5/16 x 337 3/16" (44 x 856.5 cm). New York: Library Council of The Museum of Modern Art, 2009.The seventh in the series of artist's books inaugurated in 2002 by the Library Council of The Museum of Modern Art, is a hand scroll, the traditional "book" form of old China. This ten-foot-long horizontal image, hand-printed in China from over 500 hand-carved woodblocks, depicts the flooding and social upheaval caused by the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, on the Yangtze River in the central part of the country. A gradually unfolding narrative, Ji's scroll records the sometimes banal, sometimes dramatic effects of social and environmental engineering. The work reflects Ji's ongoing study of the human and environmental loss associated with one of the largest civil-engineering feats of recent times: scheduled for completion in 2011, the Three Gorges Dam will be the world's largest hydropower plant, generating enough electricity to serve four cities the size of Los Angeles. Meanwhile its immense reservoir has displaced at least 1,200,000 people and has submerged thousands of villages, aesthetically resonant landscapes, and valuable archaeological sites. Ji was born in Beijing, in 1963. Both of his parents were absent for much of his childhood-his father was a traveling army doctor while his mother underwent reeducation in a labor camp during the Cultural Revolution-and he was raised by one of his grandmothers in Hangzhou, a capital city of China during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279 A.D.). Visually Ji's work recalls traditional Chinese landscape painting, especially that of the Song period. Even as he mines centuries-old artistic forms, however-forms that fell out of favor during the Communist era of his childhood and teenage years-he confronts contemporary issues: the carefully observed landscape of The Three Gorges Dam Migration is rendered in the early style but includes compassionate images of those dispossessed by the dam project. In Ji's work past and present are continuous; the theme of dispossession appears in historical scroll paintings, and Ji's images feature both naturalistic and symbolic images of "floating weeds"-his term for the displaced, adapted from an ancient Chinese phrase. We also see phantasmagoric depictions of inauspicious beasts, people dancing "loyalty dances" (Cultural Revolution-era replacements for traditional folk dances) expressing allegiance to the government, and officials toppling into high waters. To either side of the image, texts written by Ji in Chinese calligraphy describe China's longstanding ambitions to tame the Yangtze and their present-day outcome. Ji's best-known work is drawing, executed in traditional Chinese watercolor inks and on traditional papers. His art therefore lends itself to the classic Chinese techniques of woodblock printing, which use many of the same inks and papers, in a way that few paintings do. It has been Ji's dream to work with the printing and publishing house of Rongbaozhai, once closely associated with Beijing's old imperial enclave the Forbidden City and in operation at its present site in Beijing since the turn of the twentieth century. Rongbaozhai still makes prints and scrolls following processes developed over a thousand years ago; indeed it has survived China's dramatic changes of the last century by producing magnificent copies of national masterpieces, and several years ago was declared a "rare intangible cultural property" by the Chinese government. MoMA's Library Council is delighted to have been able to engage Rongbaozhai to produce The Three Gorges Dam Migration. For this first collaborative project between the Beijing workshop and a museum outside China, the master carvers and printers of Rongbaozhai have worked closely with Ji to create an edition of woodblock prints, sharing in his exploration and reinvention of the richly historic and still relevant form of the Chinese scroll. In 2008 and 2009, craftsmen at Rongbaozhai produced nearly 500 woodblocks, hand carved from pearwood, that then were used to print multiple impressions in watercolor ink on mulberry paper. To make the scroll, the long printed sheets were mounted by hand onto multiple layers of silk. Each finished scroll is rolled over a glass rod and housed in a handcrafted box. The printed image measures approximately 14 inches x 10 feet (35 x 306 cm). When unrolled to its full length, including silk ends, the scroll extends to nearly 32 feet. The scroll is printed in an edition of 108 copies, 20 deluxe copies, 7 deluxe copies for the artist and the Museum, and 30 artists' and printers' copies. The deluxe edition is presented in a hand-carved wooden box with an additional, original woodblock print.

The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun, Signed Limited Numbered Super Deluxe Edition, with Full Page Sketch of Grani

London: Harper Collins, 2009. De Luxe Edition. Full-Leather. As New/No Jacket, as Issued. Bill Sanderson. Signed by Editor & Illustrator. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun, The number 288 of 500 of the UK Signed Limited Numbered Super Deluxe Edition, published by Harper Collins in 2009, the first publication of a previously unknown work by J.R.R. Tolkien. Copy number 288, edited and signed by his son, Christopher Tolkien, to the Limitation Notice, and has a full page drawing of Grani to the Half Title Page, signed and dated by the Illustrator, Bill Sanderson 5th of May, 2009. The story tells the epic story of the Norse hero Sigurd the dragon slayer, the revenge of his wife, Gudrun, and the Fall of the Niflungs. From the publisher's release statement, "Many years ago, J.R.R. Tolkien composed his own version, now published for the first time, of the great legend of Northern antiquity, in two closely related poems to which he gave the titles The New Lay of the Volsungs and The New Lay of Gudrun. In the Lay of the Volsungs is told the ancestry of the great hero Sigurd, the slayer of Fafnir most celebrated of dragons, whose treasure he took for his own; of his awakening of the Valkyrie Brynhild who slept surrounded by a wall of fire, and of their betrothal; and of his coming to the court of the great princes who were named the Niflungs (or Nibelungs), with whom he entered into blood-brotherhood. In that court there sprang great love but also great hate, brought about by the power of the enchantress, mother of the Niflungs, skilled in the arts of magic, of shape-changing and potions of forgetfulness. In scenes of dramatic intensity, of confusion of identity, thwarted passion, jealousy and bitter strife, the tragedy of Sigurd and Brynhild, of Gunnar the Niflung and Gudrun his sister, mounts to its end in the murder of Sigurd at the hands of his blood-brothers, the suicide of Brynhild, and the despair of Gudrun. In the Lay of Gudrun her fate after the death of Sigurd is told, her marriage against her will to the mighty Atli, ruler of the Huns (the Attila of history), his murder of her brothers the Niflung lords, and her hideous revenge. Deriving his version primarily from his close study of the ancient poetry of Norway and Iceland known as the Poetic Edda (and where no old poetry exists, from the later prose work the Volsunga Saga), J.R.R. Tolkien employed a verse-form of short stanzas whose lines embody in English the exacting alliterative rhythms and the concentrated energy of the poems of the Edda." -- Christopher Tolkien. Features a color frontispiece of a facsimile page from J.R.R. Tolkien's original manuscript. Fully bound in Brown Leather with matching full leather clamshell case, stamped in gold foil with a unique motif of Sigurd's horse, Grani. Printed on superior quality paper and including a silk ribbon marker sewn into the textblock. Matches the recently released UK Signed Limited Numbered Super Deluxe Edition of The Children of Hurin. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. As New / No Jacket, as Issued.
