Notebook for a Transformation

[New York. 2009]. Unique artist's book / wall hanging with bas-relief sculpture and manuscript notebook, collaged with images and text on each page, signed, with the title and date, by the artist / author on the back of bar from which the notebook hangs, "Sandra Jackman." Size: total dimensions of piece are 11 x 11.25 inches, about 2.5 inches deep; the notebook itself is 4 x 6 inches and including covers has 22pp. all of which have been painted and / or collaged. Bound: purchased spiral-bound notebook covered with hand-made paper and collaged with found materials on the front and painted gold with green and yellow on the back, suspended from a wood bar which had been painted and collaged and serves as base for white paper collage of head of angel / demon, with dried pieces suspended from other side of bar in beaded netting. While the bar has mounts on the reverse to facilitate hanging, it is also housed in a black cloth over boards fold- open box measuring 13 x 12 x 3 inches. The text is troubling. A fragment reads, "None the wiser each side dies believing in the sign..." and we understand that religious fanaticism has caused endless pain and destruction throughout human history. Images are not overt. Well-known religious paintings are covered, mutated, transformed, as is the message of goodness and love that marks most of the world's religions when fanaticism takes over. Disturbingly compelling, this angel and it's book are spectacular. See an Image.

        In The Distance

Eugenie Torgerson Niles, MI: Eugenie Torgerson, 2009. UNIQUE ARTISTS' BOOK. Eugenie Torgerson is a book artist, photographer, printer, and illustrator from Michigan. She has been represented by art galleries across the U.S, and her work can be found in many corporate collections. In her artist's statement she says: "I build book and box forms with traditional bookbinding materials and methods. These sculptural objects contain my own pastel drawings and imagery generated from my own photographs. The stories they tell are contained in my words and the poetry of Kevin McCue. My subjects are the allure of the horizon, the power of the land, the experience of loss, and the sweetness of redemption." This exceptional book object comprises three individual parts. There is a small illustrated book with short poems that rests open on a box stand. The book and stand are covered by a box with a glass window on the top. Each object has been meticulously and creatively designed and produced using Ms. Torgerson's art, photography, and writing. The book is 3 inches wide x 4 inches tall x 3.5 inches thick. The poems are printed on vellum paper and coated with shellac, and the images are printed on various interesting papers. The book is bound in silver cloth with silver metal medallions on the front and back, and black and white beads around the edges. The spine is of brown suede and also has small beads sewn on. The book rests in a cradle at the top of its box stand. The stand is 5 inches tall and 9 x 10 inches at the base. The cradle is covered in green/gold cloth and decorated paper. There are the same small beads which are seen on the book cover, and there is also a medallion in the middle. The sides of the box have beautiful landscape images which are printed on Yupo synthetic material and waxed. The box base has two levels, one covered in orange cloth and the other with cloth in a gold and black design. The cover is 8 inches x 9 inches x 9 inches. The top and base are covered in decorated cloth. Each side is covered in brown cloth and has a landscape image printed on Yupo synthetic material and waxed. It has a window on top which allows one to look in at the book. This singular, stunning book object perfectly reflects Ms. Torgerson's creativity and artistry. In fine condition. Transitions. Chromogenic Prints by Judith Turner

Vincent FitzGerald & Co. [New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Co.. 2009. Portfolio of ten chromogenic prints on metallic paper, one of 20 copies only, each print numbered and initialed in pencil on the reverse by the photographer, Judith Turner, who has also signed her name on the colophon in pencil. Page size: 4-15/16 x 4-15/16 inches, 10 individual prints. Bound: loose as issued and housed in clear plastic box with front cover sliding out by Just Plastic. Titlepage / colophon page letterpress printed by Kelly-Winterton in black on gray paper. Judith Turner, noted New York photographer, took these haunting images over a period of six months. They were photographed under water, chronicling the life and death of a plant. Noted for her images of architecture, published in trade books since 1979, and by the private press, Vincent FitzGerald & Co., since 1990, she brings a solidity of shape and concreteness to the transitory water lily. The use of Kodak's silver paper for these images presents an illusive shimmer to the plant in water - suggesting the play of sunlight that would occur in the plant's natural habitat. Ms. Turner's photography is held by many institutions including the Canadian Center for Architecture, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Japan, Tel Aviv Museum, Tel Aviv, Israel, and the International Center for Photography and the Brooklyn Museum, among others. She has received numerous awards and grants including in 2007 a Star of Design Award in Photography by the Design Center of New York and in 1994 the American Institute of Architects Award.

Doors to the Saints: the edition

Boston, MA. 2010. Artist's book, one of 20 editioned copies, 12 in each set, each saint behind a "door" or cover which opens to reveal an image of the woman, with the biography on the back of the image, printed on an Epson Stylus Pro 3800 printer in Lucida calligraphy 12 and 14point, on Rising Stonehenge white paper, 245gsm, signed by both artists, Mary McCarthy and Shirley Veenema, on the printed colophon page laid in at the back. Page size: 8.5 x 6 inches; each woman saint with the month of her martyrdom on black label collaged to front of folio booklet, the first page a "door" to open to the image of the saint, with her name and of whom she is patron saint, for example, January is Elizabeth Seton / Patron to the Loss of Parents or Children. Bound: each fascicle is hand-sewn and is composed of collaged images. The set of 12 women saints are housed in a tan cloth over boards box of tan Commodore KCT cloth over binders board, lined with Ingres paper that has collaged paper and acrylic paint bas relief of resembling heavy medieval door, fastened with matching tie closure and toggle on side of box. & Ms. McCarthy and Ms. Veenema created two unique three-dimensional books exploring the lives of women saints while visiting New Mexico in 2009 - with Ms. Veenema photographing doors and Ms. McCarthy exploring stories of the saints. They started working together to create the calendar / story of women's lives from the first to the twentieth century. For this edition, they photographed the two unique sets of three- dimensional books and collaged the printed images adding printed text where the hand-written text appeared to make this printed edition of 20. Each saint's image has additional handwork; each door is cut to reveal the underlying image of the saint. Art and dress of the time of each saint was used as reference for design images. Their stories vary. Some were treated badly because of their faith. Others were treated badly because they were women. Some were beautiful and wealthy and unwilling to succumb to the wishes of men. All were willing to sacrifice their life for their faith. Their stories are the stories of women's lives over the past two millenium. Among those included are Mother Seton, Brigid of Kildare, Joan of Arc, Mary Magdalene, Hildegarde of Bingen, Winefride, and Catherine of Siena. A fascinating and beautiful story of women's lives of the past two thousand years.

        TRINIDAD: 44 PHOTOGRAPHS

London, England: Nobody Books, 2009. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. London, England: Nobody Books, 2009. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 45 pages. Artist Book. One of Stephen Gill's finest achievements. Limited Edition of 115 numbered and signed copies. The first and only edition. There is no ISBN. A stunningly beautiful production by Stephen Gill: Regular-sized volume format. Gill "scooped out" copies of Dr. Eric Williams' "British Historians And The West Indies" (published in 1964 in Port-au-Prince, Trinidad), turning it into an integral element of his Artist Book. Photographs by Stephen Gill. They are 4 X 6 inch photographic color prints encased in three envelopes that are encased within the book. Original 4.5 X 6.5 inch etching mounted on the back. In publisher's original shrinkwrap. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Stephen Gill's memento-photographs of Trinidad, the former British colony in the West Indies. Readers of the imperious (but truly great) V. S. Naipaul will have a pretty good, if colored, idea of the island. Sir Vidia's "The Killings In Trinidad" is a high spot of modern literature, one of the greatest narrative essays of our time. If Naipaul's view of Trinidad is tragic, Stephen Gill's is ambiguous (starting with his blurred photographs' muted and understated palette). The Artist Book shows the astonishing range of Gill's singular artistic project: Establishing a tangible relation between an object (the photograph) and its source/place (by merging it with a book about Trinidad that he found in Trinidad). Just as important, Gill's unpretentious and elegant gesture of complementing his photographs with an original work of art somehow honors a place that he knows will rightly never be "owned" by him (in the way that it once was by the British and in the way that photographs make us feel we "own" something, including a place). The book that Gill found is not just any book but a real scoop: Dr. Eric Williams just happens to be "the first Prime Minister of the country he has led successfully from colonialism to Independence" (Publisher's blurb on the Back Cover). A "must-have" title for Stephen Gill collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Edition, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page, and is very prominently and beautifully signed in pencil by Stephen Gill. It comes with an original 4.5 X 6.5 inch etching that is also very prominently and beautifully numbered, titled, and signed in pencil on recto by the photographer: "_ /115. Port of Prince. S. Gill". This title is now collectible. This is one of very few copies still available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap, and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. A very scarce signed copy thus. 44 original color prints, 1 original etching. Stephen Gill's "Hackney Wick" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the most brilliant living photographers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER STEPHEN GILL TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).
