        Fragments of Prayers #3

Pasadena, MD. 2009. Artist's book, unique copy, the third of three in a series each in a different format, of Sanskrit mantra, Om mani padme hum, on heavy-weight St. Armand paper, with artist's statement printed out on separate sheet and enclosed with book. Page size: 6.875 x 8 x 6.875 x 6 inches; 60 leaves. Bound by the artist: Photo Carousel style binding using black paper and housed in custom-made box of tan and black paper over boards, as the pages do not lie flat nicely like those in FRAGMENTS OF PRAYERS 2, and the artist wanted them to look like a slide carousel so they are housed in a round box inspired by a CD container. bound with black grosgrain ribbon with the title painted and lettered on another piece of St. Armand heavy weight paper, FRAGMENTS OF PRAYERS #3, in black ink, set into tan label attached with black grosgrain label and signed Elizabeth McKee and dated 2009. The text, Om Mani Padme Hum, has been painted and hand-lettered in gesso, sumi, walnut ink and white gouache with sixty different tools, thirty on each side on a sheet of white heavy-weight St. Armand paper. The artist then tore the sheet into sixty pieces for binding. The chant, Om Mani Padme Hum, is particularly associated with the four-armed Shadakshari form of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Mani means "jewel" and padma means "the lotus flower" the Buddhist Sacred Flower. The chant is commonly carved into rocks - called "mani stones" - or written on paper and inserted into prayer wheels. When the wheel is spun, it is said to have the same effect as reciting the mantra as many times as it is duplicated within the wheel. Talented book artist and calligrapher, Elizabeth Mckee's own aesthetic has enabled her to create a completely contemporary version of this ancient form for presenting a text.

Modena: Franco Cosimo Panini, 2009. Bound by hand (gilded silver binding covers and spine), clamshell case. 105363|105364|35852|45528/NE. Illuminated Manuscripts. Large Miniature. Bound by hand (gilded silver binding covers and spine), clamshell case. 30 pages, 333 pages. Facsimile with accompanying hardcover commentary. One of 980 copies. With its extraordinary binding and highly elaborate illumination work, while very small, this precious Book of Hours must be considered an absolute masterpiece. The Commentary: The work is accompanied by a book with commentary, edited by Pier Luigi Mulas, with writings by Marco Collareta, Jean-Baptiste Lebigue and Monica Visioli. Facsimile is present with the accompanying commentary and a clamshell case. The Torriani Book of Hours is just one of a small handful of manuscripts of this period which still have their original bindings. It is therefore an exceedingly rare item. The two binding covers, with their gilded silver filigree work, are adorned with cameos representing Saint Catherine and Saint Lucy. Inside the binding covers, we also find 14 enamel inserts representing the Kiss of Judas, the Way to Calvary and twelve busts of saints. The wealth, luxury and refinement of the times is clearly illustrated by the Torriani Book of Hours, alongside other devotional works of this kind produced by the jewellers workshops of Milan under the House of Sforza. Thirty illuminations adorn this small devotional codex. Twelve are Calendar illustrations. For the eighteen Offices of the Virgin we find six full-page illuminations and twelve pages with illuminated initials featuring architectural and floral motifs, putti, birds and rabbits. The illustrations for the Torriani Hours may be ascribed to the Milanese bottega (workshop) of the great Giovanni Ambrogio de Predis. This leading workshop operated in full awareness of the latest developments in the field of painting in Lombardy at the close of the fifteenth century, and, in particular, of the art of Leonardo da Vinci (with whom de Predis worked in 1483, on the Virgin of the Rocks). The embellishments of the borders, with their markedly naturalistic representations of animals, jewels and floral sprays, are the work of the young Matteo da Milano one of the leading illuminators of Milan who received commissions from the most important Houses of Renaissance Italy. The codex was commissioned by the Milanese Della Torre or Torriani house, an illustrious family of Lombardy which, for some time, ruled over Milan. Further confirmation of the Milanese origin of the work is to be found in the inclusion of certain features such as local saints, in the Calendar, and the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, Milans old cathedral, surmounted by a statue of Saint Ambrose (the Patron Saint of Milan). However, the identity of the lady for whom the codex was made, perhaps a lady of the court of Ludovico Sforza, is unknown.

        Seven Stories

Göttingen: Steidl Verlag, 2009. First edition. 7 volumes with the original slipcase. Signed twice by Robert Frank, once in volume 1 and on the front of the slipcase. Each volume is in fine condition, as is the box. Seven Stories brings together sequences of single images Frank has been compiling to create books of new work. As always the photographs and stories relate to Frank's life and milieu, his homes in Mabou and New York, or a trip to China or Spain. This collection of small books is a new stage in the practice of this remarkable artist who continually challenges the limits of photography and film and strives to avoid repeating himself. Robert Frank is the photographer of the classic work The Americans and has been compared to a modern-day de Tocqueville for his original perspective of American society. He was born in Switzerland, and though he was initially optimistic about United States society and culture, Frank came to believe the fast pace of American life derived from an overemphasis on money. His photography is an honest portrayal of an often bleak and lonely urbanized country.

Along the way he captured some of the most intriguing moments of his generation with a keen and intuitive eye. From a selection of images compiled by Hopper and gallerist Tony Shafrazi - more than a third of them previously unpublished - this extensive volume distills the essence of Hopper&#146;s brilliantly prodigious photographic career. Also included are introductory essays by Tony Shafrazi and legendary West Coast art pioneer Walter Hopps, and an extensive biography by journalist Jessica Hundley.       (APOLLO 11). Mailer, Norman, Colum McCann & Buzz Aldrin. MOONFIRE: THE EPIC JOURNEY OF APOLLO 11 - FIRST LIMITED EDITION WITH A SIGNED PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT. With a Photograph Signed by Buzz Aldrin. Koln, GERMANY: Benedikt Taschen Verlag, 2009. First Edition 1/1969 Deluxe. Folio. Cloth in a Plastic Case. Photography Monograph. As New/As New. 350pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "To commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing, Taschen has paired Norman Mailer&#39;s seminal text with spectacular photography from the archives of NASA, LIFE magazine and many other sources to create a unique tribute to the defining scientific mission of our era. It has been called the single most historic event of the 20th century: On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins met John F. Kennedy&#39;s call for a manned Moon landing by the end of the 1960s. A decade of tests and training, a staff of 400,000 engineers and scientists, and a twenty-four billion dollar budget climaxed with the launch of the most powerful rocket ever built, and an unprecedented event watched by millions the world over. And nobody captured the men, the mood, and the machinery like Norman Mailer. One of the greatest writers of his generation, Mailer was hired by LIFE to cover the Moon shot. His three-part feature, the longest nonfiction piece LIFE had published, was later developed into his book "Of A Fire On The Moon". This seminal work of cultural analysis and philosophy is reproduced here for the first time ever, and Mailer&#39;s provocative and trenchant insights remain unsurpassed in defining this epochal event. Illustrating Mailer&#39;s gripping text are hundreds of the greatest photographs and film stills from the NASA vaults, magazine archives, and private collections. Many previously unpublished, these images trace the development of the agency and its mission, from early experimentation to that breathtaking instant when Man first stepped on the Moon s surface, and the world&#39;s jubilant reaction. An original introduction by Colum McCann and captions by Apollo 11 experts explain the history and science behind the images, citing the mission log, post-flight interviews with the astronauts, and publications of the day. Each copy includes a Plexiglas-framed, numbered, ready-to-hang, archival-quality photographic print signed by Buzz Aldrin produced using the revolutionary new Skia printing technique. This shot of Aldrin standing on the Moon with fellow astronaut Neil Armstrong reflected in his helmet&#39;s visor is the definitive image of the Apollo 11 mission, and one of the most famous and iconic photos ever taken". A pristine copy (#0452) of this extraordinary, no longer available from the publisher undertaking limited to one thousand, nine hundred and sixty-nine copies unopened in Taschen&#39;s printed shipping carton, as issued. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. 3-8365-1179-7 Inventory Number: 021260&

Loket, Czech Republic Jan & Jarmila Sobota 2009 - 35pp. From an edition of twenty copies, this is an artist's proof signed by Jan & Jarmila Sobota, who designed, published, and bound the book. Poe's tale of a murderer who cannot escape his guilt, in a creative and dynamic presentation. The text is printed in purple ink on pink paper. The book is bound in black paper-covered boards with a black leather spine. On the cover is the design of a cat's head with fiery eyes and a mouth open wide, revealing sharp fangs, composed of a black leather onlay, printed paper, and painted details. The book is attached to a spring, which coils inside a hinged box. The lid of the box is painted to look like a brick wall, and the cat springs forth when the lid is unclasped. Extremely fine.         The Topography of Home

Oakland: In Cahoots Press, 2009. Hard Cover. Fine. Hard Cover. Macy Chadwick formed the In Cahoots Press in 2002. Her work often addresses memory, communication, and connections between people. She is currently teaching book arts and letterpress at the Academy of Art University, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the San Francisco Center for the Book. 2 of 50 copies. Signed and numbered by the artist. "The Topography of Home is the artist&#39;;s attempted reconciliation of living in the present while longing for the remembered feelings of the past, embodied in her childhood hometown. Imagery of letterpress printed maps convey a more emotional than geographical terrain; events and places are recorded and revisited, worried over and longed for. The book&#39;;s pages are punctuated with silk tissue apertures, allowing the viewer to look ahead to a piece of the imagery on the next page, and then, as the page is turned, to look back at a small part of the image on the page before. This sequential aspect of the book literally and metaphorically has the reader both seeing the past through the present and looking forward through history&#39;;s gauze" (Macy Chadwick). Fine in blue paper covered boards with title pastedown to front board. Printed with pressure prints and polymer plates on Mohawk Superfine and French&#39;;s Extra Blue Butcher paper. The window images are hand-stenciled on Silk Tissue. [21 pages.] ARTB/043009.

Berkeley: Del Milion Editions, 2009. Square octavo. (48)pp. One of 45 copies. Printed by Peter Koch and illustrated with digital pigment prints of seven photographs by Karen Filter. The photographs depict scenes that could have been taken straight from film noir, with gun-wielding men wearing fedoras and women in slinky dresses. Fitting to accompany Spillane&#39;s work, the photos were selected from Filter&#39;s "B-Movie Series" and "Detective Series."       Bologna, Italy: Editore Damiani, 2010. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. Bologna, Italy: Editore Damiani, 2010. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 280 pages. Retrospective collection of all-male portrait-photographs. One of the most beautiful collections of its kind ever published. Limited Clamshell Box Edition of 60 numbered and signed copies. The limitation is indicated not on the book but on the archival print that was produced by Greg Gorman specifically for the edition. Should not be confused with the 2009 Hardcover Edition. A stunningly beautiful production by Greg Gorman and Editore Damiani: Oversize-volume format. Photographs by Greg Gorman. Essay, "The Moment of Beauty", by Peter Weiermair. Inner linen clamshell cloth box, which contains the book in the recessed center. 13 X 17 inch gallery print-sized silver-gelatin print of Christopher Atkins is encased in its own black folio, which is also laid within the box. Outer cardboard box, which protects the easily soiled linen cloth box, but is missing in many copies of the Limited Edition. Printed on glossy stock paper in Bologna, Italy to the very highest standards. In pictorial DJ with gilt titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Greg Gorman&#39;s alluring eighth collection, a celebration of masculine beauty at its absolute peak, that is, "in their youth". "Comprises over 200 of the photographer&#39;s previously unpublished portraits from the last three decades, featuring famous actors shot when they were still unknown young men, from teen years into their early twenties [teen = eighteen and older; all of the models were of legal age] . Gorman&#39;s intimate celebrity portraits hinge on the sense of his subjects&#39; vulnerability" (Publisher&#39;s blurb). "I decided to do a project that expressed my infatuation with male beauty, especially in terms of youth. The portraits don&#39;t have lots of backgrounds, they&#39;re straightforward. It&#39;s really about the person, not the elements. It boils down to the graphics of the individual more than the graphics of the setting" (Greg Gorman). They are all here, today&#39;s biggest stars, and the starlets who would give them a run for their money if looks were the sole measure. An absolute "must-have" edition for Greg Gorman collectors. <b><i> This copy is one of the Limited Clamshell Box Edition, indicated as such on the gallery print-sized silver-gelatin print that is very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in pencil on verso by Greg Gorman. It is also very prominently, beautifully, and uniquely signed by Christopher Atkins. Gorman did not sign the book itself, which is still in the publisher&#39;s original shrinkwrap. This title is now highly collectible. This is one of very few copies still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. The print alone ensures that this edition&#39;s value will keep and keep going up. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> 200 plates, 1 original print. One of the finest living American photographers.         The Compendium Finale of Contemporary Jewellers 2008

Darling publ. 2009. hardcover, 2 volumes, 2400 pag. ! 13.55kg. . Most important contemporary of jewellers of 2008 !! very good edition with illustrations on each page in color. A totally fantastic experience showing this colossal workThe Compendium of Contemporary Jewellery Makers in two Volumes, Part One, 2008 This 13,5 Kilo, 2400 pages Opus Maximus was released 14 March 2009 during the International Schmuck 2009 Fair and already nicknamed by many jewellers as "the Messiah" as it was eagerly awaited since a year and was expected to bring great relief in the sleepless nights of jewellers from 54 nations. At the Compendium Party during the release, over 1000 visitors could catch a glance at the most rumoured and gossiped about publication of 2008, and managed to empty over 180 bottles with alcoholic content within a couple of hours (at daytime!). 132 lucky jewellers could carry their boxed copies home (although quite many of them somehow underestimated the physical weight of 14 kilos!). During the waiting time for the rest of the edition to be bound (by hand!) it is expected that the nickname "Messiah" will be still valid, although a big difference is that The Compendium did show up.The Compendium will show on a never done before scale and manner what is happening in 2008 in the entire worldwide Contemporary Jewellery scene. Jewellery Artists from 54 nations has been nominated by Jewellery Artists. The 1st purpose of Andy Lim, the publisher and editor, is to try to establish Contemporary Jewellery as an equally respected art form in the Contemporary Art and to create a platform, not to be neglected, which will be reached already by its sheer volume and power of 1044 artists, united in one single publication. It is not only a book about 1000 jewellers, it is a book created by 1000 jewellers, as every jeweller have the full freedom of a 2-page presentation a person. The alphabetical order of presentation secures a non hierarchical and non political ranking. The publishers 2nd purpose is to discover beyond the already wellknown and established artists (ca. 300) interesting positions of contemporary jewellery. And who are better talent scouts than the artists themselves Who are more aware than anybody else of what collegues are doing They are at the cradle of the work process. And as 3rd, but not least goal: to present an astonishing bibliophile book in an unsurpassed quality of the highest standards in the Art of Bookmaking. - 2 Volume Hardcover in the Lim-slipcase with separate pull out system. - Bound in the Final Edition of the stunning Techno Fabric. - Print and handbinding entirely in Germany, as always with Darling Publications. - A stunning book where you discover everything your heart desires and covets. - An already legendary reference book, and that´s why a MUST for libraries, museums, galleries, design lovers and the serious art and book collectors. As Bruce Metcalf explained to somebody during the making of the Compendium: "It&#39;s true there&#39;s no overarching curatorial viewpoint - by design. Lim wanted to make the selection process more open

From the publisher: "Over the course of his long career Bruce Davidson has travelled the world making reportage stories both on assignment as a member of the Magnum agency and on subjects of personal interest. A few years ago he returned to his archive of negatives housed in a room in his Manhattan apartment and began a ritual of revisiting each and every one of the stories he had made, from his work as a student in 1954 to his urban landscapes in Los Angeles in 2009. Printing in his darkroom alongside the archive, he began to elaborate a very personal selection, discovering forgotten images and throwing new light onto some of his most famous series. Outside Inside is the result of this work, a sumptuous three volume box set with fifty-three chapters over 800 pages. Each chapter is introduced by a short text written by Davidson himself. The result is a celebration of the development of a master of the medium and an autobiography, a photographer's life seen through his work." Signed by Author [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
