Vatican: Archivio Segreto Vaticano, 2004 Chosen for its special value among those conserved and relative to the Veneto area, the original parchment dated 1586 has been kept in the Vatican Archives safe for centuries. This document (archive reference A.A., Arm. I-XVIII, 1302) was offered by the Venetian Doge Pasquale Cicogna (1585-1595), brave man of business and arms, Duke of Candia and Rector of Cyprus, in the name of the Serenissima Senate to Pope Sisto V, as magnificent residence of its “orator” in the Venetian Government, the palazzo owned by the Gritti family, previously residence of Doge Andrea Gritti (1533-1538), "in contrata Sanctae Iustinae, penes ecclesiam Sancti Francisci super Campo" where the Papal Nuncio lived in Venice (in just a small part). This exclusive, unique edition will guide its lucky owners on a journey back in time, to the Venice of the Doges. The finely illuminated document has been chosen for its exceptional artistic work, and is corroborated by the splendid gold seal of Doge Pasquale Cicogna; the precious critical edition will give the fortunate owner of the "Exemplar" a chance to see the histori … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPENDER, Humphrey
Lawford, Essex; Fox Ash Press. 2004. Limited edition; 4to; original boards. Edition of 300 this is one of 20 containing a modern archival photographic print of Humphrey Sender's self portrait, hand-printed on fibre-based paper from the original 1934 negative and signed by Spender, plus a slip case. David Jury, who established the Fox Ash Press in 1998, was engaged to photograph the entire contents of Spender's studio in 1997, and discovered in a draw, a large paper envelope with the words Moroccan Diary scrawled across it. It was found to contain a type written diary. The original hand written diary was also soon discovered. Jury found the diary to be a 'blunt, unreserved and compelling description of an alien world by a young, privileged, upper-middle class Englishman'. Spender had travelled to Morocco in the 1930s and he found his attempts to survive and assimilate the experience something of a challenge. Spender made the typed version on his return to England and it includes edits and revisions as he had the idea of trying to get it published. In this book both versions of the texts have been arranged side by side to allow comparison. 80 pages 32 black and white photographs by Spender, tipped in. Original prospectus. Fine in slip case. ISBN: 0954845900.

(SOTH, ALEC). Soth, Alec, Patricia Hampl & Anne Wilkes Tucker
(SOTH, ALEC). Soth, Alec, Patricia Hampl & Anne Wilkes Tucker. ALEC SOTH: SLEEPING BY THE MISSISSIPPI - FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER. Signed by the Photographer. Gottingen, GERMANY: Steidl, 2004. First Edition, First Printing. 4to. Pictorial Boards. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. np (120pp), 46 color illustrations + covers. Designed by Steidl Design. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "Evolving from a series of road trips along the Mississippi River, Alec Soth's "Sleeping by the Mississippi" captures America's iconic yet oft-neglected "third coast". Soth's richly descriptive, large-format color photographs present an eclectic mix of individuals, landscapes, and interiors. Sensuous in detail and raw in subject, "Sleeping by the Mississippi" elicits a consistent mood of loneliness, longing, and reverie. "In the book's 46 ruthlessly edited pictures," writes Anne Wilkes Tucker, "Soth alludes to illness, procreation, race, crime, learning, art, music, death, religion, redemption, politics, and cheap sex". Like Robert Frank's classic "The Americans", it merges a documentary style with a poetic sensibility. The Mississippi is less the subject of the book than its organizing structure. Not bound by a rigid concept or ideology, the series is created out of a quintessentially American spirit of wanderlust". A pristine copy of the 2004 first Steidl printing featuring a detail from the image "Cape Girardeau, Missouri" on the front cover (cited on page 50 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A … [Click Below for Full Description]

Verdigris Press. Verne, Jules.
Octon, France: Verdigris Press, 2004. One of 38 copies only, all on Hahnemuhle paper, each copy hand-numbered and signed by the artist Judith Rothchild and the printer, Mark Lintott. Page size: 11-3/4 inches x 5-15/16 inches; 4 leaves + colophon printed on gray paper mounted on inside rear cover. Bound by Mark Lintott: leporello style, but on the vertical, original screen prints by Judith Rothchild in subtle shades of gray on the front and back boards, with gray silk ribbon pull at bottom of front board, housed in publisher's clamshell box of gray paper, title printed in black on front panel, lined with screen prints made by Rothchild in shades of gray, fine. Jules Verne's poem was written in 1848 when the author was just 20. The poem literally passes through a storm before reaching safe haven on the other side. The text is superimposed on a series of four of Rothchild's ominous mezzotints which start with a threatening sky, go to the complete blackness of the storm and then to clouds quickly moving to sunlight. The text is hand set and letterpress printed in Vendome romain on an Albion press by Mark Lintott. Considering world events of 1848, Verne shows himself to be an optimist with this moving verse admirably served by Rothchild's handsome images which really give a sense of the speed and drama of the storm. Meticulously crafted, this is a lovely book. Selected for inclusion in Wellesley College exhibition and catalogue, RESONANCE AND RESPONSE (2005).

Utah:: Wormwood Press,, 2004.. Edition of 88. 11.5 x 14"; 22 pages. Designed, handset, and printed by the artist in 18 point Caslon Old Face on Kochi paper. Calligraphy on the title page hand brushed by Toshiko Yoshizaki. Stab binding with exposed thread. Bound in blue linen. Eight etchings by Chris Young. Standard version in handmade linen box. In this re-telling of a Japanese folktale, a young boy, Michan, searching for a lost doll's head, is captured and enslaved by a clan of Oni-women. He escapes with a magical cooking-stick and with the aid of some inspired ingenuity — how else to describe his trouserless dance that convulses the pursuing Oni-women with laughter — returns safely to the home of his grandfather. A hint of Jack and the Beanstalk, of Alice down the rabbit-hole, and perhaps of Cinderella caring for the hearth. But the somber tone of Young?'s etchings reflects the disturbing surreal impact of the tale. Stunning etchings, with printing and design to match.

An impeccable first edition, first printing in As New condition in alike dust jacket. This copy has been SIGNED by AUTHOR Philip Roth on the title page. A most collectible copy, rather scarce in signed condition; With "The Plot Against America", Roth enters the area alternate history with aviation hero Charles A. Lindbergh defeating Franklin Roosevelt by a landslide in the 1940 U. S. Presidential election. Not only had Lindbergh, in a nationwide radio address, publicly blamed the Jews for selfishly pushing America toward a pointless war with Nazi Germany, but upon taking office as the thirty-third president of the United States, he negotiated a cordial 'understanding' with Adolf Hitler, whose conquest of Europe and virulent anti-Semitic policies he appeared to accept without difficulty. Mission, British Columbia:: Barbarian Press,, 2004.. Regular Edition of 150. 13 x 9.5" 150 pages. Quarter bound by Rasmussen Bindery in cloth and printed paper over boards, printed label on spine. Hand set in Bembo and Fairbanks italic with Bembo and Castellar for display. Facsimile text of earlier edition printed in offset facsimile from the original pages. Numerous tip-ins and illustrations, from wood engravings to pages from the original press runs of books. Slipcased. Barbarian's first bibliography, Utile Dulci: The First Decade at Barbarian Press 1977-87 has long since been out of print. Fifteen years passed. Barbarian celebrated twenty-five years of printing. To commemorate such a wonderful history of printing a new bibliography was embarked upon. Because much has happened since the original bibliography it would be easy to issue a further bibliography to mark the press's silver anniversary. Instead of having two volumes distinct from one another Barbarian has elected to incorporate the earlier bibliography into this one in order to provide a complete picture of the press's books to date. It is indeed a beautiful anniversary commemoration.

McMurtry, Larry
2004 New York, Simon & Schuster. First Edition Limited/Numbered. Signed by Author Cloth. Folly and Glory is the fourth and final volume of the series titled The Berrybender Narratives. There were seventy-five copies of this novel that were numbered and signed by Larry McMurtry. This copy is numbered 67 of seventy five. The book is in Very Fine condition with no flaws whatsoever. This is a very scarce book and it represents a wonderful investment in the most important writings of Mr. McMurtry since Lonesome Dove. The sweep and depth of the story of each of these narratives really defies description and although the entire series is one epic drama it would require a synopsis of each volume to share with you the excitement and adventure contained here. The tetralogy basically chronicles the adventures of a Great English sporting family, the Berrybenders, as they make their way through the American West in the years 1832-1836. Each individual novel is set on or beside the four Great rivers along which the family travels. These are the Missouri, the Yellowstone, the Rio Grande, and the Brazos. The journeys of Lewis and Clark are still a living memory. We meet Kit Carson as well as the great painter George Catlin. We encounter mountain men and trappers, fearsome Sioux warrior chiefs, slave traders and virtually any sort of character that you might imagine from the Old West. This novel is written with the wit and sagacity that only Larry McMurtry can muster and this signed numbered edition will be a terrific acquisition for the serious collector. There is humor, love, violence, in … [Click Below for Full Description]
