FAIRHURST, Angus; HIRST, Damien; LUCAS, Sarah [MUIR, Gregor; WALLIS, Clarrie].
London: Tate Publishing, 2004. Square, glossy, colourful pictorial soft covers with flaps. Boldly SIGNED on the half title by Fairhurst, Hirst, and Lucas. The artists, close friends since their Art course days in the 1980's, came to present their work together at the Tate Museum in 2004, in an exhibition by that title - 'a mutated pop reference to the classical theme of the Garden of Eden - taken from the 1968 recording of the psychedelic rock band Iron Butterfly'. A record of this unique event, this book contains 'pages from their sketchbooks, working drawings and original artists' texts, as well as lucid essays on their work by the exhibition curators'. A fine copy. Gregor Muir is Kramlich curator of Contemporary Art of Tate. Clarrie Wallis is a curator at Tate Britain.

BIALOBRZESKI, Peter
Ostfildern-Ruit: Hatje Cantz Verlag, 2004. Limited edition of 25 copies of an original Type-C print, signed, titled "Shenzhen, 2001" and numbered (this being #5/25) in black ink on verso by Bialobrzeski (image size 10-3/4 x 13-3/4 inches, paper size 12 x 16 inches). Originally published to accompany the limited edition of the book Neon Tigers, this print does not include the book. Fine. From the publisher: "In Neon Tigers, [Bialobrzeski] merges the seven Asian cities of Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Jakarta, Singapore, and Shenzhen into a virtual megatropolis. His photos present an image of a world that no longer seems real but appears instead as a series of dream-images of an eccentric film architect or computer-game producer. Their references to reality evoke a sense of conflict in the viewer, as appreciation for the beauty of the absurd competes with recognition of an irreversible process of change in urban living space. They expose two different growth models: unscrupulous, uncontrolled expansion, as in Bangkok, and totally controlled, yet equally unscrupulous growth in a city like Shanghai. Bialobrzeski's photographs are full of conflicting signs and symbols that are often indecipherable for Westerners-a kind of semiotic overkill that is held in check only by the picture frame." Signed by Author. Fine. No dust jacket as issued. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Jun Takahashi, Hiroshi Fujiwara; Vivienne Westwood, Malcolm McLaren
No Publisher (Jun Takahashi / Undercover) No Date (ca 2004), No Place (Tokyo) - Folio. Unpaginated. Black cloth in Pin up Slipcase. Reputedly printed in an edition of 1000 copies. No Text. Phenomenally scarce inventory of Sex, Seditionaries, Let it Rock, Vivienne Westwood/Malcolm McClaren clothing. Page after page after page of original garments flat photographed, probably the only record of a lot of the garments. The publicity shy Takahashi of Undercover fame has probably the biggest collection of early Westwood, and this book documents all of it. Apparently McClaren flipped his wig and thought it had to be the collection of either Rei Kawakubo or Yoji Yamamoto, as they were the only two people he remembered buying one of everything in each colour. An underground legend. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Schönau: Verlag Norbert Hethke 2004 - Pro Band 120 Seiten, Fadenheftung, Format 17,5 x 24,9 cm, hartgebundene u. glanzkaschierte Original-Pappbände. * Durchgehend mehrfarbige Comics. Baum, L. Frank
Great Barrington, MA: Michael McCurdy, 2004. Quarto. One of eight copies. A suite of twenty-five laser prints of drawings by Michael McCurdy, each hand-colored, signed, and numbered by the artist. The drawings were originally done by McCurdy at the request of the University Press of Kansas, which commissioned the artist to illustrate its Kansas Centennial Edition of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1999. McCurdy's drawings are bold and strong, yet still dream-like, providing a new interpretation of Baum's classic children's tale. The prints are carefully hand-colored with subtle tints and tone. The prints are housed in an emerald green clamshell box, together with a copy of the book, which is signed by the artist with an original drawing of the Scarecrow. In addition to McCurdy's illustrations, the Centennial Edition features a Foreword by Ray Bradbury. Extremely fine.

Asparagus Valley (Hadley): Double Elephant Press, 2004. 7 1/2 x 10. 16 leaves, 6 of which fold out plus a coded spinning wheel. Printed throughout with woodcuts and chiaroscuro woodcuts in several colors on Japanese handmade paper. Bound by Mark Tomlinson in Shannon Brock's flax fiber wraps printed with a woodcut & wood type. The turned in covers sport a die-cut question mark & exclamation point revealing red flyleaves beneath. In a red flax chemise with ivory ankh, whose staff slides to open the case. Fine. Laid in are the Operating Instructions, a large Key to the Wood Type, and the 10 x 29 inch broadside prospectus. One of 150 copies. A marvelously inventive, colorful, exuberant work. The book opens with double spreads depicting the answer to a familiar riddle, to which the reader is invited to guess the answer. Others reveal geometry most likely used to construct the great pyramids. Illustration on p. [19] has three flaps that open to reveal letters that change as the paper wheel within the double leaf is turned. The text, impeccably printed by Art Larson, is set in 19th century wood type from his collection. Book, Art, Object page 154.

He also edited his own magazine, The Conservative (1915-23), filling it with additional essays. In these articles Lovecraft discusses the conflict between the United and the National Amateur Press Associations; the "halcyon days" of the amateur movement (1885-95); and the "needs and betterment" of the amateur cause. We read of Lovecraft's bitter feuds with his fellow amateurs; his exhaustive critiques of their writing; and, most poignant of all, his touching affirmation of "What Amateurdom and I Have Done for Each Other," in which he concludes simply: "What Amateur Journalism has given me is—life itself." --LITERARY, 280 pages - Lovecraft's writings in the realm of literary criticism are unfailingly acute and cover a surprisingly wide range. Besides his authoritative early essay on "The Literature of Rome" (1918), other works condemn free verse and simple spelling, and devote attention to neglected poets.
