Out of print (sold out upon release). Very scarce. As New (book, print and slipcase all in flawless condition). Rineke Dijkstra might be the most important photographer of portraits alive today. She channels August Sander through her own poet-soul photographing youth with brutal, unyielding generosity. Her people emerge from beaches, hospital rooms, indefinable space, to haunt us with their imperfect beauty and their fierce necessity of existence. These photographs heroicize individuals in a brazen way. Dijkstra isn't content with confirming that banality is truth. She gives us the truth of fiction, the theatrics of the psychological complexity. She lets us way, way inside. The smudged blood on the collar of a bullfighter is in dialogue with the thin stream of blood running down a new mother's leg as she clutches her hours-old infant with an uncertainty that is astonishing. From Rineke Dijkstra: "In the end, it's the individual that I'm after."From the publisher: "Rineke Dijkstra is renowned for her uncanny and thoughtful portraits series of teenagers and young adults: girls and boys of various nationalities at the beach, children of Bosnian refugees, Spanish bullfighters straight out of the arena, Israeli youngsters before and after military service, and here, documented for the first time, her series of photographs taken of aspiring, young ballet dancers. Her subjects are shown standing, facing the camera, against a minimal background. Formally, the images resemble classical portraiture with their frontally posed figures isolated against minimal backgrounds. Yet, in spite of the uniformity in the photographer's works, there is a marked individuality in each of her subjects. Dijkstra often deals with the development of personality as one moves from adolescence to adulthood, or through a life-changing or potentially threatening experience such as childbirth, or a bullfight. Portraits includes the photographer's new Ballet School series." Signed by Author. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Taliesin and the Mockers [DESIGN BINDING - Paul Delrue]

[Monmouthshire]: The Old Stile Press, 2004. Limited Edition. Leather. Fine. Cour, Glenys. Signed by Author of Afterword, Artist, and Binder. Folio - over 12" to 15" tall. 56 pgs. Limited edition of 225 copies, this no. 195, signed by both author of the afterword and by the artist. This copy in a custom binding by Paul Delrue, done in 2014, who also has signed on the colophon page. ***ABOUT THE BINDER: Paul Delrue (b. 1944) bound his first book at the age of 15 in 1959, and knew he had discovered his calling. He became an apprentice at the University College, London from 1961-64 and worked there as a binder until 1971, when he set up his own bindery. In 1981 was elected a Fellow of the Society of Bookbinders, having founded and served as chairman of the Chester and North Wales branch in 1979. Paul has earned numerous awards and honours, including the Silver medal and three other awards in 1991 in The Bookbinding Competition. He was elected a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in the same year; the following year he was awarded two Bronze medals in the prestigious Prix Paul Bonet. Paul invented the lacunose style of binding which he has taught to other binders, although he uses other methods as well. His work is highly prized and springs from within him; as he writes on his web site, "A book and its binding are inextricably linked - the one complements the other in a way which creates something more than just a book with an attractive cover. My design bindings draw on what a book says to me and how it inspires me emotionally". ***ABOUT THE ARTIST: Glenys Cour who, with her sculptor husband, Ronald, was part of the famous group in Swansea that included Vernon Watkins and his close friend Dylan Thomas. Her richly powerful collage images help to make a journey through this large format book an extraordinary experience. She is, still today, a near neighbour in Swansea of Gwen Watkins who has given so much kind encouragement to the project and, in the Afterword, has written compellingly about her husband's life and work (N.B., info on artist from website of the Old Stile Press). ***DESCRIPTION: Custom binding in full leathers of blue, grey, black and tan, inlaid and embossed, the title of the work on the front with a seagull flying across a sun, the author on the back with the silhouette of a new moon, evoking thoughts of creation appropriate to the poem; Paul has used multiple and varying endpapers and flyleaves, ranging from a mottled grey, to black, blue and purple. The text was produced by the Old Stile Press, title page in blue and black, the images by Glenys Cour in black, text of the poem in blue; of the book, only 225 copies were printed, this being no. 195; the author of the Afterword and the Artist have both signed the colophon page; additionally, Paul Delrue as the binder for this copy has signed below with the date of 2014; the book is slightly oblong, the text block being just over 13" tall by 13.5" wide; unpaginated with 28 leaves; Omega type on Fabriano Tiziano. The book is protected by a custom box also made by Paul of blue linen cloth decorated simply but in a style which echoes the binding, gilt lettering on the front and spine, lined with natural linen. ***CONDITION: Both the book and the box are fine, as new; we acquired the book directly from the binder, it is pristine having come directly from his bindery. ***POSTAGE: Please note that due to the size and weight of this work additional postage may apply; we are happy to ship at cost to both domestic and international customers, please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         ARCHIV PETER PILLER: Von Erde Schöner

(Frankfurt am Main): (Revolver), (2004). First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. Square 4to. Tan cloth with stamped lettering in glossy photographic dust jacket. Very mild, small dent to bottom edge of pages, and light crinkling to two corners of jacket; else a fine copy in like DJ. Unpaginated. Text in German; from an edition of 800 copies. A selection of images from a photo archive procured by Piller, consisting of about 20,000 aerial photographs of homes taken between 1979 and 1983 by a company whose intention was to sell the images to the homeowners. Piller's selections are divided into 23 categories, each focused on various details: pools, cars being washed, birds in the frame, laundry hung out to dry, graveyards near the homes, lawns being mowed (one homeowner looks puzzledly up at the plane), etc. A profound and fascinating series with uncommon perspectives on the prosaic, suburban context.

Testament of Cresseid, A Retelling of Robert Henryson's Poem by Seamus Heaney [DeLuxe Edition, with Prospectus]

(London): Enitharmon Editions (2004) [designed and printed at the Rampant Lions Press], 2004. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. O'Donoghue, Hughie. No. 2 of 75 of the de luxe edition (total edition 475), with a signed and numbered original etching, Folio - over 12 to 15" tall. 43 pp., Signed by Author and Artist. Robert Henryson (ca. 1420-1490) was a Middle Scots poet whose existing work is comprised of three long poems and a few shorter works. This work imagines a tragic fate for Cressida in the medieval story of Troilus and Criseyde which was left untold by Geoffrey Chaucer in his version. Seamus Justin Heaney (1939-2013), a Nobel Prize-winning author in his own right and considered by many as the greatest poet of the 20th century, was also a noted translator (his version of Beowulf was considered groundbreaking in its use of modern language melded with the original Anglo-Saxon "music"). In his introduction to this work, he warns the reader that he "must be prepared to go on a strange journey". The selection of this poem was his, as a fitting complement to the artwork of Hughie O'Donoghue (b. 1953), for, as Mr. Heaney says in the close of his introduction, "this artist has a mastery and gravitas, a combination of detachment and answerability, of intimacy and bigness, that are reminiscent of Henryson" (N.B., above info from Wiki and book's introduction). ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in evergreen cloth, small pictorial pastedown inset to the front board, paper spine label, fore-edge uncut, title page in green and black, six illustrations by Hughie O'Donoghue tipped onto pages bound within the text; text designed and printed by Sebastian Carter of the Rampant Lions Press, types Perpetua and Golden Cockerel Roman, paper Arches Velin, small folio in size (just over 12.25" tall), pagination: (1)-41, blank (42), colophon (43); limited edition of 475 copies total, of which 75 are the de luxe version with a signed and numbered original etching by Hughie O'Donoghue, this no. 2, signed on the colophon page by both Seamus Heaney and Hughie O'Donoghue. Loosely laid into the book is the publisher's prospectus, a single sheet printed on both sides. The separate, signed print is tissue-guarded and contained within a wallet of heavy ivory cardstock, this number 2 of 75. The matching publisher's slipcase is covered in the same evergreen cloth, paper label on the front. ***CONDITION: Fine, the binding clean and unrubbed and the green colour deep (no sunning), the front pastedown perfect with no edgewear, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings. The prospectus is near fine with a couple of shallow bends along the edges. The separate signed print and its wallet are also fine, with no edgewear or creases. The slipcase is fine as well, strong and sturdy, the cloth binding unrubbed, the pastedown clean and free of edgewear. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         To the Place of the Emerald Buddha, Images in Pochoir and Etching with Pages from a Thai Book [SUSAN ALLIX, No. 2 of 5]

[London]: Susan Allix [2004], 2004. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. 35 p. Signed by Book Artist. Limited edition of only 5, this no. 2 of 4 offered for sale, signed by Susan Allix on the colophon page. Susan was inspired to create this book during a trip to Australia, during which she stopped in Bangkok to see the city. As with other Indian cities, it has an "engagement with colour and life that overflowed from the streets to the temples and the river". She found the text, which would only stretch to five books, on a pavement shop in a street market and the seller seemed uninterested in it and only said it was "about Buddha" but wouldn't elaborate. During the trip she planned the book using watercolours and local silks for sewing; upon her return to England she used pochoir for the plates because the book had evolved with that sort of identity. The text is part of a book printed by letterpress in a delicate Thai script, which is now old and fragile. Although "about Buddha" its exact meaning is left mysterious, for this is an evocation of atmosphere and place rather than a written record, which combines the unfamiliar, the remnants of age and tradition and the present visual reality (N.B. The above information from Susan Allix). ***DESCRIPTION: The binding has three panels of natural goatskin; two remaining panels on front and back boards are covered in golden satin, overlaid with shapes of transparent acetate incised with fine lines and inked in black. Beige, red and green paper onlays, graphite and watercolour are added. The images were made by pochoir from original drawings and overprinted with finely textured etchings. The pages were then laced together with orange or green silk, reminiscent of the garlands of marigolds and lotus buds around the temple. The images, on Saunders mould made paper, and the printed pages are mounted on beige hand-made paper; titles are printed in Granby. The endpapers are golden Washi and the fly-leaves sand-coloured hand-made. The interleaving is conservation glassine. Enclosed in a ivory cloth box lined with emerald felt, with paper labels on the spine and front. Quarto size (just under 12" tall), 35 pages, text pages in Thai. ***CONDITION: Fine, in a fine box. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Hoi Barbaroi, a Quarter-Century at Barbarian Press (De luxe Edition)

(Mission, British Columbia): Barbarian Press, 2004. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Evans, David (Photographic Essay). Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. 149 p. Signed by Author(s). No. 26 of 60 of the de luxe edition (total edition 180 copies), bound in quarter black morocco, with specimens in a portfolio, both encased on a slipcase, SIGNED by Jan and Crispin Elsted on the colophon page. The Barbarian Press may be best known today for their presentation of "major texts beautifully interpreted and illustrated by artists at the top of their form" (from the essay by Jan), usually illustrations which celebrate the art of wood engraving. The accompanying folder presents approximately 27 pieces of original ephemera, ranging from wine bottle labels to catalogues. ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in quarter black morocco with gilt lettering on the spine, printed paper sides, fore-edge uncut, black laid paper endpapers, title page in teal and black, four of their wood engraving publisher's devices in red and one in black, chapter titles in red, photographic essay of black and white photos, bibliography presented in two parts with the years 1977-1987 reprinted in facsimile from "Utile Dulci: The First Decades at Barbarian Press" followed by "The Bibliography Continued" with this section containing tipped-in samples; types Bembo roman and Fairbanks italic, papers Heine mouldmade, Mohawk superfine, and Vintage Velvet, folio size (approximately 12.5" tall), pagination: (i-x), (1)-137, blank (138), colophon (139) ; this no. 26 of 60 deluxe copies, total edition of 180.         Reflections on a Cardboard Box Illustrated by Henrik Drescher

Mount Hebron, Wisconsin:: The Perishable Press,, 2004.. Edition of 100 . 35 x 18 x 0.8 cm (9.75 x 7 x 0.25"); 32 page surfaces (30 printed). Printed in reds, blues, browns, greens, and greys. Titled page calligraphed by the illustrator. Hand-bound by the printer. Printed cloth spine with Sugikawa over thin boards. Box certificate on cover reading "Auster-Drescher Container Corp., Hay Hollow, Wisconsin". Press numbered. Signed by Auster and Hamady. Hamady's signature dated "6 VII 17." Hamady (7/6/1917): "These books ae pristine, as issued by the printer/publisher. Unlike the secondary market they are somehow of a better upbringing. Juxtamorphing (the) space (in) [catalog for exhibition "Juxtamorphing Space," James Watrous Gallery of the Wisconsin Academy, 7 October through November 20, 2005]: "This is the first collaboration with this author and the third with this artist. As in all creative endeavors, this one, almost Ouija-like, took guidance from the text, including custom-made papers (from Twinrocker and St. Armand) to evoke a corrugated cardboard box. Gill Sans Bold seemed appropriate to the toughness of topic and was reset with paper and copper thins to ease the reader's eye, the opposite effect of Drescher's imagery." Alastair Johnston, "Life & Death in Driftless, Wisconsin": "So often Hamady has used the binding to extend the meaning of the book - such as Auster's Reflections on a Cardboard Box (illustrated by Henrik Drescher, 2004), Perishable's 129th title. It has an entirely calligraphed title-page by Drescher printed in six colors, which has a cover stamped with the kind of seal you see on actual cardboard boxes (the Container Corp in this case is a container of art and ideas)." Paul Auster is an American novelist, essayist, translator, and poet. He has been awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature, the Prix Médicis étranger, an Independent Spirit Award, and the Premio Napoli. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and is a Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Henrik Drescher Wikipedia (accessed 7/16/2017): "In 1967 Drescher and his family emigrated to the United States. Drescher began studying at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston but quit after one semester to become an illustrator. While travelling in North America and Europe he kept journals of notes and drawings that informed his later work. Drescher's editorial illustrations appear regularly in The New York Times, the Washington Post, Newsweek, Time, and Rolling Stone. He has also written and illustrated several books, including books for children." Selected by The American Institute of Graphic Arts for "50 Books/50 Covers 2004 Show.
