The History Boys. An original hand-corrected script for the very first production of Bennett's multi-award-winning play

2004. Ninety-two loose-leaved hole-punched sheets printed on rectos only. The cover sheet shows the printed text "Typed 13th January 2004 / Revised 20th January 2004 / Revised 18th February 2004" and then in Bennett's hand "Revised 16 March 2004" - just two days prior to the opening night. There are corrections and alterations in Bennett's hand on almost every page, some in pencil and others in red ink, including the replacement of a number lines by much lengthier monologues, this new text occasionally written onto the adjacent versos. In other instances replacement sheets with new dialogue have been taped over the original text or onto the versos, and some of these revisions then subsequently altered. Also included are two copies of the actors scripts, unbound A5 format, printed on both sides; the first a printed version dated 13th January 2004, and the second a photocopied typeset undated version, but clearly one of the first two revisions and including further printed alterations. These scripts came from the collection of Andrew Speed, Stage Manager of the National Theatre who occasionally appeared in certain performances as and when stand-ins were required. Almost anybody connected with the production could be called upon at any time to make up the numbers of the non-speaking cast - all that was needed was a white shirt, black trousers and the Cutlers' Grammar School tie. Andrew's prop school tie is included with the scripts. A unique and very desirable item. The play opened at the Lyttelton Theatre in London on 18 May 2004 where it played to sell-out audiences and its limited run was frequently extended. Winner of the Evening Standard Award for Best Play and Best Actor (Richard Giffiths) with subsequent productions winning both a Laurence Olivier Award and Tony Award for Best Play.. No Binding. Very Good.

        Munificentia Venetiarum

Vatican: Archivio Segreto Vaticano, 2004 Chosen for its special value among those conserved and relative to the Veneto area, the original parchment dated 1586 has been kept in the Vatican Archives safe for centuries. This document (archive reference A.A., Arm. I-XVIII, 1302) was offered by the Venetian Doge Pasquale Cicogna (1585-1595), brave man of business and arms, Duke of Candia and Rector of Cyprus, in the name of the Serenissima Senate to Pope Sisto V, as magnificent residence of its “orator” in the Venetian Government, the palazzo owned by the Gritti family, previously residence of Doge Andrea Gritti (1533-1538), "in contrata Sanctae Iustinae, penes ecclesiam Sancti Francisci super Campo" where the Papal Nuncio lived in Venice (in just a small part). The golden seal of Doge Pasquale Cicogna is joined to the document by a red silk thread run through with gold threads. For centuries kept in the Secret Archives, the famous collection of Vatican gold seals is among the most important in the world. Kings, Princes and Emperors have sent their messages to the Popes over the centuries, corroborating the documents with their seal in a sign of devotion, which was made of gold on special occasions. This exclusive, unique edition will guide its lucky owners on a journey back in time, to the Venice of the Doges. The finely illuminated document has been chosen for its exceptional artistic work, and is corroborated by the splendid gold seal of Doge Pasquale Cicogna; the precious critical edition will give the fortunate owner of the "Exemplar" a chance to see the historic-political history of the Serenissima Republic and the richness of the Doges correspondence and the extensive value and preciousness of its contents. // Printed in May 2004 by "Art Color Printing", Rome, Italy on Magnani di Pescia Acqueforte paper 200 g.         The (Mis) Behavior of Markets: A Fractal View of Risk, Ruin, and Reward

New York: Basic Books, 2004.. First edition. Octavo. Inscribed by Benoit Mandelbrot, "For William, with the compliments of the senior author Benoit Mandelbrot". Fine in a fine dust jacket. “The deepest and most realistic finance book ever published.” (Nassim Nicholas Taleb) The (Mis)Behavior of Markets, Mandelbrot joins with science journalist and former Wall Street Journal editor Richard L. Hudson to reveal what a fractal view of the world of finance looks like. The result is a revolutionary reevaluation of the standard tools and models of modern financial theory. Markets, we learn, are far riskier than we have wanted to believe. From the gyrations of IBM's stock price and the Dow, to cotton trading, and the dollar-Euro exchange rate--Mandelbrot shows that the world of finance can be understood in more accurate, and volatile, terms than the tired theories of yesteryear. The ability to simplify the complex has made Mandelbrot one of the century's most influential mathematicians. With The (Mis)Behavior of Markets, he puts the tools of higher mathematics into the hands of every person involved with markets, from financial analysts to economists to 401(k) holders.

Taken together, these materials offer an incomparable guide to early Texas history. Indeed, C.W. Raines, the state librarian, praises Gammel in the introduction, noting "these volumes are in the nature of original evidence for the student of our jurisprudence, and that nowhere else can it be so well studied as to its origin, character, successive changes, and its present status as a blended system of the Roman Civil Law and the Common Law of England (Volume I, v). Published over one hundred years ago, it remains an invaluable resource. In Basic Texas Law Books, Jenkins says it is "the most valuable compilation of early laws of Texas, and still the most useful" (69).

Magneticall Aduertisements: or divers pertinent obseruations, and approued experiments concerning the nature and properties of the Load-stone... most needfull for practise, of trauelling, or framing of Instruments fit for Trauellers both by Sea and Land.1616: Edward Griffin for Timothy Barlow, London.

First edition, very rare, containing Barlow's fundamental discovery, the directional properties of the compass-needle. In this book the English word magnetism (and also magneticall) is used for the first time (OED). Horblit 83; Streeter 19 [same copy]. <br/><br/> Barlow "designed navigating instruments, polar charts, and compasses. He explained the difference between iron and steel needles; improved the needle's shape; made an easily removable card so the needle could be easily remagnetized; gave instructions as to the best method of remagnetizing the needle by stroking it with the lodestone three or four times from the needle's center to the ends, using the north end of the lodestone for the needle's north end, and the south for the south. He also designed an azimuth compass for measuring the variations which happened to be an improvement on the instrument designed by Norman and Borough; it was a compass with sights and a verge ring marked in degrees, the first such compass, and was to be used by grateful seamen for over two hundred years" (Gurney, <i>Compass, a Story of Exploration and Innovation</i>, New York, 2004 p.64). <br/><br/> Barlow's interest in magnetism, which had begun some forty years before the publication of this book, involved him in relations with William Gilbert (1540-1603). Gilbert's <i>De magnete</i> (1600), which was written in Latin, discussed magnetism at length, but he took the Copernican heliocentric view whereas Barlow, as a good churchman, stuck to the geocentric view. Barlow writes in English, and he acknowledges (on A2v) the influence of Gilbert: 'before, and also after the setting forth of D. Gilberts booke: And none more earnest herein that D. Gilbert himselfe, vnto whom I communicated what I had obserued of my selfe, and what I had built vpon his foundation of the Magnetisme of the earth.' We learn also that he had in 1609 ('about seauen yeeres since') given a copy of the manuscript for Prince Henry (whose chaplain he was) to Sir Thomas Challenor, chamberlain to the prince. Challenor lost or mislaid the manuscript, as he did a second copy, so that although he had undertaken to see the book into print, it was left to Barlow himself, after Challenor's death in 1615, to make sure it saw the light of day. It was dedicated to another important scientific figure interested in magnetism, Dudley Digges (1583-1639), who had for many years urged Barlow to publish on this subject. <br/><br/> The book brought Barlow into conflict with Mark Ridley, formerly physician to the tsar of Russia, who had published his own <i>Magnetical Bodies and Motions</i> in 1613. The two men then engaged in a pamphlet war: Ridley accused Barlow of plagiarizing <i>Magnetical Bodies</i>; Barlow accused Ridley of having surreptitiously gained access to his manuscript when it was in the hands of Challenor. "Ridley then claimed that Barlow had simply copied from <i>De magnete</i>, although Barlow had annexed in Advertisements a letter which he had received from Gilbert referring to their shared ideas, and praising Barlow's scientific achievements" (ODNB). <br/><br/> STC 1442 (copies in USA at Boston Public, Folger, Huntington, Pennsylvania, U.S. Naval Academy Nimitz, Wisconsin-Madison, Yale); Taylor, Mathematical Practitioners 129. <br/><br/> The Horblit-Streeter copy was auctioned in 2007 for $36,000; Wheeler Gift 89; Andrade 27; Penrose 19; Honeyman 214.. Small 4to (181 x 130 mm), pp [xvi] 86 [2: letter from Gilbert] (without the errata leaf), 2 full-page woodcuts of compasses, several woodcut diagrams in text, 3 cm closed tear to A4 (no loss), latter half calf over marbled boards, with the Macclesfield book plate to front paste down, a very good copy
