MONA KUHN: PHOTOGRAPHS: THE DELUXE EDITION

Gottingen, Germany: Gerhard Steidl Druckerei Und Verlag, 2004. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. Gottingen, Germany: Gerhard Steidl Druckerei Und Verlag, 2004. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 108 pages. Collection of male and female nudes. One of the most beautiful erotic art photography titles of our time. Deluxe Slipcased Edition of 100 numbered and signed copies. None of the copies was sold to the public. The Deluxe Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Mona Kuhn and Gerhard Steidl: Oversize-volume format. Cloth boards with green titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Mona Kuhn. Text by Kai and Luzia. List of Plates and Acknowledgments appended at the end. 10 X 10 inch original color print mounted on the back, encased in its own glassine sheet, and laid into the book. Matching cloth slipcase. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Gottingen, Germany to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents the Brazilian photographer&#39;s nude portraits in solo, duo, and group shots. The debt to the work of Jock Sturges is unmistakable, and Kuhn thanks him in her Acknowledgments. Still, these are about the beauty of the human body as the starting point in Mona Kuhn&#39;s quest to capture a timeless and otherworldy state of grace. "Evokes states of being that are at once foreign and familiar. When I first saw her images, I felt the dislocation of a time traveller encountering a realm that we, in modern life, have almost lost through our carelessness or consciously abandoned with our callousness. In that far-off place, figures sit or stand or lie together with natural grace, resembling the Greek gods that Roberto Calasso reminds us have never left the world even though we have overlooked their presence here. In her photographs, Mona enables these archetypes to spring into physical form once again from deep within our psyches" (Darius Himes) . Kuhn has exhibited in the United States and Europe extensively, and her work has been championed by Sir Elton John, who owns the single largest collection of her work. A lyrical and sensual collection, this is an absolute "must-have" edition for Mona Kuhn collectors. <b><i> This copy is Number 36/100, indicated as such on one side of the slipcase, and is very boldly and beautifully numbered and signed in black pen-marker on the title page by the photographer: "Mona Kuhn 36/100". Laid-in is a 10 X 10 inch original color print that is also very prominently and beautifully titled, dated, numbered, and signed in pencil on verso by the photographer: "Mona Kuhn 2003/03. 36/100. &#39;Merle, 2003&#39; limited book edition". The print is of the cover portrait itself, something rarely done. This edition is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> 20 color, 33 tritone plates, 1 original color print. One of the most brilliant living photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER MONA KUHN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3865210082.

        Morocco: A desert adventure

Lawford, Essex; Fox Ash Press. 2004. - Limited edition; 4to; original boards. Edition of 300 this is one of 20 containing a modern archival photographic print of Humphrey Sender's self portrait, hand-printed on fibre-based paper from the original 1934 negative and signed by Spender, plus a slip case. David Jury, who established the Fox Ash Press in 1998, was engaged to photograph the entire contents of Spender's studio in 1997, and discovered in a draw, a large paper envelope with the words Moroccan Diary scrawled across it. It was found to contain a type written diary. The original hand written diary was also soon discovered. Jury found the diary to be a 'blunt, unreserved and compelling description of an alien world by a young, privileged, upper-middle class Englishman'. Spender had travelled to Morocco in the 1930s and he found his attempts to survive and assimilate the experience something of a challenge. Spender made the typed version on his return to England and it includes edits and revisions as he had the idea of trying to get it published. In this book both versions of the texts have been arranged side by side to allow comparison. 80 pages 32 black and white photographs by Spender, tipped in. Original prospectus. Fine in slip case.

Itinerarium Portugallensium e Lusitania in Indiam et inde occidentem et demum ad aquilonem.[Milan, J. A. Scinzenzeler], 1508. Folio (25 x 19.5 cm). Title-page with woodcut map (second issue, with "Arabicus" replacing "P[er]sicus"). Early 20th-century red morocco, gilt edges.

Borba de Moraes, p. 580; Harrisse 58; Sabin 50058; cf. PMM 42; Romano, Historical atlas of the United Arab Emirates (New York, 2004), 26. First Latin edition of the most important and "earliest printed collection of voyages and discoveries" (PMM). Also the only edition of this collection of travel reports to include the map showing Africa, Arabia and part of Europe, illustrating for the first time the new discoveries in the eastern hemisphere. This map, not included in the original 1507 Italian edition or any subsequent edition, is the earliest to show Africa completely surrounded by seas and, as one of the first non-Ptolemaic maps to include Arabia, definitely the earliest "modern" printed map to show Mecca. Published in 1508, it raises a controversy still with us more than 500 years later: it labels the Red Sea and the Gulf as a single body of water and calls it the Gulf, but in the first state of the block it was called the "Persian Gulf" ("Sinus Persicus"). For reasons unknown, the editor revised the block with a patch to rename it the "Arabian Gulf" ("Sinus Arabicus"). The map therefore exists in two different states in copies of this edition. Ours is the rarer second one, with "Sinus Arabicus". From the famous collection of Dr. Samuel X. Radbill. Foot of map creased as folded for binding, head of first 3 leaves with a stain and last 5 leaves with corner stains, binding slightly rubbed. Overall a very bright and clean copy.

With 1 engraved plate (portrait of the author), 17 full-page engravings (ca. 16 x 11.5 cm.) by Dirk Volkertsz. Coornhert after designs of the monogrammist CVSK and a full-page woodcut of an obelisk at the end, signed with the monogram 'HE'. With: (2) NOOT, Jan van der. Lofsang van Braband. ... Hymne de Braband. Antwerp, Gillis van den Rade, 1580. With 4 full-page woodcuts (portrait of the author, allegorical illustration, arms of Brabant and the other 16 provinces, and an obelisk). (3) NOOT, Jan van der. Verscheyden poeticsche werken. ... Divers oeuvres poetiques. Antwerp, Gillis van den Rade, 1581. With full-page woodcut portrait of the author, and a full-page woodcut obelisk at the end. 3 works in 1 volume. Folio. All 3 works with text in Dutch and French. Early 18th-century gold-tooled mottled calf.

Belg. Typ. 4625 (ad 1), 4626 (ad 2); 4632 (ad 3); Hollstein (Dutch and Flemish) IV, p. 231, 260-76 (ad 1); Vermeylen, Leven en werken van Jonker Jan van der Noot, pp. 63-72, 87 ff. & bibliography: p. 147, III, A. 1 (ad 1); IV (ad 2); V, B. 22 (ad 3); Werner Waterschoot, ''Rond een convoluut van Jonker Jan van der Noot'', in: E Codicibis Impressisque. Opstellen voor Elly Cockx-Indestege (2004), vol. II, pp. 425-36. Ad 1: Rare first edition in the original Dutch (a German translation appeared in the same year at Cologne) of one of the most important poetical works by the Dutch Renaissance poet Jan (Baptist) van der Noot (ca.1539-ca.1595) illustrated by the famous engraver and theologian, Dirck Volkertsz. Coornhert (1522-1590). The 17 finely engraved illustrations show episodes from the 12 books of the poem. Two bear the signature of the engraver Dirck Volkertsz. Coornhert, the latter, depicting Van der Noot's conversation with Theude, dated 1571. This shows that Van der Noot was already working on his Olympia epics by that time and that Coornhert, Hendrick Goltzius's master, engraved the plates while living in exile in the German Rhineland. The work was probably largely finished at that time. The woodcut with the allegorical obelisk with "hieroglyphs" (pictorial images in a wholly Western style) is one of the earliest examples of mystical interest in ancient Egypt.Ad 2: First and only edition of a poem glorifying the Duchy of Braband. Ad 3: First edition of a collection of laudatory poems in honour of Van der Noot's patrons, originally meant to serve as some kind of prologue to the Cort Begryp and Lofsang (ad 1 & 2). There are no page numbers or quire signatures, and Waterschoot notes, "For each new buyer Van der Noot arranged the leaves differently" (E Codicibis Impressisque, p. 436).Slightly thumbed in places, binding worn. Very good copies of three rare and important poetical works.

Hayes, Genius of Arab Civilisation, Source of Renaissance, pp.168-169.16th century printing of Avicenna?s Canon of Medicine [al-Qanun fi?l-Tibb], the most important medical textbook ever written which dominated medical teaching for six centuries. First printed in Strasburg before 1473, several incunable editions followed. The Canon was first printed in Arabic at the Medicean Press in Rome in 1593.Ibn Sina (980-1037), known in the West as Avicenna, physician and philosopher, poet, courtier and politician, had perhaps a wider influence in the Eastern and Western hemispheres than any other Islamic thinker. The Al-Quanun is a compendium of Greek and Muslim medical knowledge of Ibn Sina?s time, co-ordinating the teachings of Galen, Hippocrates and Aristotle, and describes Syrio-Arabic and Indo-Persian practices and includes Ibn Sina?s own experiments. It was accepted by the Islamic medical world as its major reference work until the 19th century. The West used the text for more than five hundred years, and in its latin translation it became the authoritative book in all Universities. It contains many original observations. Ibn Sina was the first to describe meningitis and pleurisy, and discovered the contagious nature of tuberculosis. He described the disease causing jaundice, studied the thorax and accurately described brain haemorrage and ankylostomiasis. The book contains on pp.1-1039 Liber Canonis in 5 books [Primus-Quintus] translated from Arabic into Latin by Gerard of Cremona [ca 1114-1187] and notes by Benedetto Rinio [1485-1565]; Libellus de removendis nocumentis quae accident in regimine sanitatis translated by Arnold of Villa Nova [ca 1240-1211]; Cantica Avicenne pp.1059-1082 by Armengaud Blasius; Libellus Avicenne pp.1083-1104 by Andreas Alpago [fl.early 16th century]; Andrea Bellunensis Arabicorum Nominum...         Magnum Founders: In Celebration of 60 Years (Signed BAT with 16 Platinum Prints)

Santa Barbara: Verso Limited Editions , 2009. Limited Edition . Hardcover. Fine. In 2009, fine press photography book publisher Verso Limited Editions released Magnum Founders: In celebration of 60 Years: Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, and David Seymor. Limited to 75 copies worldwide, the hand-bound collection contains sixteen original platinum prints (twelve bound prints - three from each photographer - and four free-standing that are suitable for framing - 2 by Henri Cartier-Bresson and one each from Robert Capa and George Rodger). Each print is estate stamped and designated as the BAT with the Henri Cartier-Bresson signed in full on the recto by Martine Franck, the widow of Henri Cartier-Bresson. This is the only copy signed by Martine Franck. The Cartier-Bresson stand alone prints were not included in the offering. These prints were presented to Stan Klimek, the platinum printmaker of the edition by the publisher after the edition was released. The Cartier-Bresson prints in Magnum Founders as well as the two free standing prints are the only authorized prints from the Cartier-Bresson estate issued since his death in 2004. Commissioned by Magnum Photos, the book was published in cooperation with the estates of the four photographers and contains a foreword by Elliott Erwitt, renowned photographer and past president of Magnum Photos. The book and prints measure 14 x 16 inches (portrait). All images in Magnum Founders were hand printed in platinum by Stan Klimek on Fabriano Artistico, a traditional 100% cotton watercolor paper. Each print is then individually stamped by the photographer\'s estate with the Cartier-Bresson prints signed by Martine Franck on the BAT copy. The text of Magnum Founders is composed in Walbaum and Helvetica Neue by the Press & Letterfoundry of Michael & Winifred Bixler. It is printed on 100% cotton Hahnemühle Photo Rag by Michael Russem at Kat Ran Press. Each book is hand-bound in quarter-leather by Mark Tomlinson featuring distinctive red Japanese crepe endsheets, red leather endbands and a unique cover construction of black and red laminated paper boards. Designed by Skolkin + Chickey, the collection is encased in an English buckram clamshell and presented in a custom-crafted walnut box suitable for display. Each handcrafted book presents some of the most defining images of each photographer\'s oeuvre. Robert Capa earned the title \"The Greatest War Photographer in the World\" after his photographs of the Spanish Civil War. The book features Capa\'s famous \"Falling Soldier\" image taken in 1936 on the Córdoba front during this conflict, as well as his World War II photograph documenting the first moments of the Americans landing on Omaha Beach. Cartier-Bresson was fascinated with painting, and particularly interested in surrealism. The prints in Magnum Founders include his playfully subversive group portrait of Valencian entertainers taken in 1933, as well as a stunning view of Muslim women on the slopes of Hari Parbal Hill, praying toward the sun rising behind the Himalayas. George Rodger\'s pictures of the London Blitz brought him to the attention of Life magazine, and from 1939 to 1945 he was one of the magazine\'s war correspondents. The book includes one of his London Blitz photographs of a young boy wearing his tin helmet with pride. The collection also features two photographs from Rodger\'s work in Africa where he spent decades documenting tribal life. Known for his compassionate treatment of his subjects, David \"Chim\" Seymour photographed children particularly well. Magnum Founders features a 1948 portrait of a young Polish orphan who was traumatized by her experiences in German concentration camps making a troubled attempt to draw a picture of her home. The book has been signed by the 55 current Magnum Photographers. There are four free standing prints that measure 14 x 16 inches and are suitable for framing. The book, case, and prints are in FINE condition.
