Samuel Pepys; Robert Latham & William Matthews (editors)
London: The Folio Society, 2003. Hardcover. Very Good. Marvelous special Folio Society limited edition of Pepys' Diaries. A 'New and Complete Transcription' edited by Latham and Matthews with further contributing editors. Contains the complete diary from 1660 to 1669 in nine volumes with a diary index and a diary companion. Pepys' Diary was written in shorthand and occasionally, when further privacy was required, a melange of Spanish, French and Italian and thus not meant for immediate public consumption. Accordingly it provides an unfettered insight into his private life and the social mores of the 17th century. Pepys was also assiduous chronicler of his age, recording the restoration of Charles II, The Anglo-Dutch War, the Plague of 1665 and the Great Fire of London. This is the definitive edition of an astonishingly valuable historical and social document. This edition is limited to 1000 sets, of which this is number 342. Small 8vo. (225x150mm) Bound in quarter Nigerian Morocco leather with marbled boards. All edges gilt. This set would most likely have been issued in a wooden presentation case which is now missing. Occasional very light shelfwear and marking/creasing to leather. But contents uniformly crisp and pristine. A very pleasing set. Very good+

FitzGerald & Co., Vincent. Rumi, Jalaluddin Mohammad.
New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Company, 2003. Artist's book, signed, limited edition, one of 35 copies, each copy consisting of 7 plates of Depp Glass, each plate with a laser etch of the English translation of the verse of thirteenth-century Sufi philosopher and poet, Rumi. There is, as well, a laser etch of the original Persian verse. Laser etching accomplished by Laser Edge Designs. Each plate of glass is 6-1/2 x 9-1/2 inches. The concept and design for this book sculpture is by Kelly Driscoll. The type for the English translation is Diotima. The calligraphy is by Jerry Kelly. The printed colophon is by Wild Carrot Letterpress. Housed in a pale sea-green suede box with fall-down sides and held together by magnets imbedded in the box sides. This is an extraordinarily beautiful book with the laser etch on each tablet visible through to the bottom from the top. The subtlety of the designs created by this assemblage is breathtaking, and the play of light through the glass captivating. Of course, the idea of a pre-codex text being made available in a contemporary pre-codex form seems miraculously simple; rather it is simply miraculous. Known for publishing the finest of contemporary artist's books, Vincent FitzGerald & Co., has once again created a thing of intriguing beauty.

Verdigris Press. Stevens, Wallace.
Octon, France: Verdigris Press, 2003. One of 44 copies from a total issue of 50, all on Hahnemuhle paper, each copy signed in pencil by the artist, Judith Rothchild, and the printer, Mark Lintott, and hand-numbered in pencil; the 6 deluxe copies with an original copper plate and housed in custom-made clamshell box by Mark Lintott. 20pp; page size: 11 x 11-13/16". Bound: leporello loose in original wrappers that are green, brown, and gold screen-printed paper by Judith Rothchild, the title printed in dark green in French and English on the front and in dark brown on the brown spine, housed in publisher's slipcase of the same screen-printed paper by Rothchild. Judith Rothchild's mezzotints are extraordinarily beautiful with 9 separate plates (including title page) of single and double pears. There are pears blind engraved on the white spaces of the pages. The text is hand-set letterpress and was printed on an 1867 Albion press by Mark Lintott with Wallace Stevens' English verse in black and Bernard Noel's French translation following it in brown. Judith Rothchild's affinity for objects from the natural world - pomegranates, figs, grapevines - is confirmed in this splendid edition of Wallace Stevens' verse. It is about as lovely a book as I've seen - the velvety mezzotints infusing a mystery and wonder for the miracle of this fruit so taken for granted. Rothchild's sculptural pears are indeed what Stevens' meant when he wrote, "Opusculum paedagogum. / The pears are not viols, / Nudes or bottles. They resemble nothing else."

Limited edition: 1984 / 4000 numbered copiesSize: 18" x 10" x 3"Subject: Art, Fashion & Photography Object: Gold metal box with loose printed arts in pony skinPublished in 2003VISIONAIRE #33 TOUCH FENDIArtist and longtime Visionaire contributor Francois Berthoud outdid himself when he interpreted twenty of our favorite new looks from the fall/winter 2000-2001 collections, which were all about excess and sensory overload. Elements such as pop-ups and cutouts represented a journey back to our roots, but whereas in the past we could only afford to use one or two of these techniques in an entire issue, this time each page received multiple treatments. Flocking, foil stamping, sculpt-embossing, and honeycomb extension gave the feeling in print of fur over metallic lace over sequins over a dress with leather appliques over patterned stockings. Our collaborator Fendi's tactile ready-to-wear collection that season was a key source of inspiration. The unbound illustrations were wrapped in a wearable pony-skin cache-col and housed in a brushed-gold metal box. Highlights include designs by John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Viktor and Rolf, Junya Watanabe, and Helmut Lang.Visionaire Publishing, LLC was co-founded by Stephen Gan, Cecilia Dean, and James Kaliardos. Wallace Stevens
Octon: Verdigris Press, 2003. Condition: Fine - Signed. Number 10 of 50 copies, quarto size, [20] pp., signed by Judith Rothchild and the printer Mark Lintott. Wallace Stevens (1879-1955) was "one of America's most respected poets. He was a master stylist, employing an extraordinary vocabulary and a rigorous precision in crafting his poems. But he was also a philosopher of aesthetics, vigorously exploring the notion of poetry as the supreme fusion of the creative imagination and objective reality." (N.B., from the web site of the Poetry Foundation.) "Study of Two Pears" was first published in 1954 in The Collected Poems of Wallace Stevens, and is here translated into French by Bernard Noel. The title asserts itself as being concerned with visual arts, and each stanza tugs at the tension between reality that is observed and imaginative reality, the observer sees the pears but not as he wills, language fails to adequately describe them as they are without the use of metaphor. There might be no more appropriate poem to illustrate than this, as the speaker's desire to describe the pears without relating them to anything else is an act of reduction which ultimately expands the image by showing us the many things they do resemble. Illustrated by Rothchild's velvety, hyper-realistic mezzotints which follow the progress of the stanzas, each print gradually growing brighter, the pears illustrated from every possible angle, becoming more definite and resolved along with the poem. DESCRIPTION: Original wrappers screen-printed with a design of green, brown and orange, with the title le … [Click Below for Full Description]

Illinois, Bolingbrook. The Teitan Press, Bolingbrook, Illinois 2003. Gr.-8°. With 35 b/w photographs. xii, 416 S., 2 (w) OLwd. mit Goldprägung und OUmschlag. First Edition. - "The first documentary study of Aleister Crowley's contemporary followers in North America, told through the life of their de facto leader, Wilfred Talbot Smith (1885-1957). Smith, the unacknowledged offspring of a prominent English family, emigrated to Canada where he encountered Charles Stansfeld Jones, and through him, the works of Aleister Crowley. Although Crowley and Smith met only once, their twenty year correspondence proved to be a major link to the few and the faithful attracted to Crowley's work in the United States and Canada. Smith's spiritual life centered first on the initiatic structure of the Order of the A.·.A.·., soon complemented by the emerging fraternal and social schemes of the Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO). Smith followed Jones into a few long-forgotten movements like the Universal Brotherhood and the Psychomagian Society, but he declined membership in C.F. Russell's Choronzon Club. To promulgate the Crowleyan teachings, in 1934 Smith incorporated his own "Church of Thelema" - known to Los Angeles newspaper readers as the "Purple Cult". The following year he initiated OTO activity in Los Angeles which attracted its own cast of occult characters. Smith's life reached a strange conclusion when Crowley, taking a page from Louis Bromfield's novel "The Strange Case of Miss Annie Spragg" and combining it with a reading of Smith's natal chart, sent him off on a retreat to determine which … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mark Twain
San Francisco: Pacific Editions, 2003. Condition: Fine in a like slipcase. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall Signed by Book Designer. Limited edition of 38 copies, this being no. 35. Charles Hobson, book artist extraordinaire, has brought together a perfectly lovely tale of love by Mark Twain, personified with images of a running man and woman based on the human motion studies by Eadweard Muybridge made in 1901. Twain wrote two separate stories, "Extracts for Adam's Diary" and later "Eve's Diary", with much of the sentiment of the two for each other derived from the deep love he and his wife, Livy, shared throughout their lives. The French Door design of the binding of this book enables the reader to compare Adam's and Eve's "diaries" while the two figures race towards each other. DESCRIPTION: Made as a limited edition of 38 copies; 13 x 5 3/4 x 1 1/2 inches, 46 pages, signed by Charles Hobson on the colophon page, the pages contained within a traditional book-style binding of paper decorated with red apples and green concentric circles on a black background, black cloth spine with gilt lettering, publisher's matching slipcase covered in grey cloth with a front pastedown of a small piece of decorate paper matching the boards. The diaries have been published here in a French door style of binding with a concertina fold which allow each diary to be read as single, integral work while at the same time allowing passages from each to be easily compared; the concertina also provides a place to print the verses from Genesis that were Twain's source and, on the inside fold, the handwritin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Supreme Court of the United States; Kennedy, A
2003. Slip Opinion Signed by Justice Kennedy. Pre-US Reports Printing of a Landmark Supreme Court Civil Rights Case Signed by Justice Kennedy Supreme Court of the United States. [Kennedy, Anthony]. (Slip Opinion) Lawrence et al v. Texas. [Washington, DC: Government Printing Office, 2003]. 18, 8, 21, [1], 1 pp. Complete. Signature of Justice Kennedy to head of first page. Fold lines to corners of a few leaves, otherwise fine. $1,000. * Based on the Fourteenth Amendment's concept of substantive due process, Lawrence v. Texas is a landmark civil rights case that struck down the sodomy law in Texas and, by extension, similar laws in 13 other states, making same-sex sexual activity legal throughout the United States. Kennedy wrote the majority opinion for this case, which was joined by Justices Stevens, Souter, Ginsburg and Breyer. This decision set the stage for further reconsiderations of laws concerning homosexual rights, including the landmark case of Obergefell v. Hodges, which recognized same-sex marriage as a fundamental right under the U.S. Constitution. Bench opinions are issued by the U.S. Supreme Court immediately after the announcement of a decision. Slip opinions are issued afterwards. Often incorporating corrections, they are the first printings of a decision intended for wide dissemination and review. After that stage the revised slip opinions are added to the latest paperback volume of U.S. Reports. A year later, that volume is printed in its final, authoritative, hardcover form.

Charles Cros
Octon, France: Verdigris Press, 2003. Condition: Fine - Signed. Number 8 of 35, quarto size, [22] pp., signed by Judith Rothchild, text in French. Charles Cros (1842-1888) was a French poet and scientific inventor. His proposals and theories about color photography and the phonograph were published almost simultaneously with those of Louis Ducos du Hauron and Thomas Edison. Cros did not devotedly belong to any fixed group or school, but was friends with poets such as Verlaine and Rimbaud, and frequented the salons of both the Symbolists and the Décadents. In 1874 he published Le Fleuve, a long poem in alexandrine verse, illustrated with watercolors by Édouard Manet. His bohemian lifestyle and lifelong devotion to absinthe helped to degrade his health, and at the time of his death in 1888 most of his work remained unpublished. The four poems of Les Quatre Saisons were first published in Le Coffret de Santal in 1873, and earned the poet the Juglar Prize, one of the few points of recognition Cros received during his lifetime. Judith Rothchild's four mezzotints appropriately illustrate the emotion of the artist while also emphasizing the "season" both of nature and of the heart expressed in each poem; asparagus buds for spring, "wheat" that appears wind blown for summer, a split chestnut for autumn, and a "flame" for winter. DESCRIPTION: Original black Somerset Velvet paper wrappers silk screened by the artist in shades of green and brown, title and author blind-embossed to the spine, matching design in blind to endpapers, housed in a green paper slipcase with similar silk sc … [Click Below for Full Description]
