Contemporary half calf, gold-tooled spine (Henry Young & Sons, Liverpool).

      Garrick, "Indian Ocean, post-exploration", in: Speake, Literature of travel and exploration (2003), pp. 608-610; Hogg, African slave trade 3302. First edition of a very detailed and well-illustrated account of a British naval campaign to suppress the East African slave trade in the years 1868 to 1870, published only eight years after the end of the United States' Civil War and the abolition of slavery there. Slavery was not outlawed in the Ottoman Empire (which at the time of publication included Egypt and what is now Iraq) until 1882 and in Iran and most of the Gulf States not until the 20th century. The book was written by Captain Philip Howard Colomb (1831-1899), Commander of the HMS Dryad from 1868 to 1870, who lead the campaign. He operated primarily in and around the Gulf, Oman and Zanzibar, and captured seven slave ships during those two years. The illustrations show the Dryad and some of the slave ships, individual and group portraits of slaves encountered during the campaign and views of ports where slave trading occurred.With bookplate and some occasional underscoring in pencil. The folding map foxed, otherwise a very good copy. Binding only slightly rubbed along the extremities. An essential primary source for any study of the slave trade, especially in the Gulf region.

This book, designed by Giovanni Bianco, accompanied Klein and Madonna's collaborative exhibition installation X-STaTIC PRO=CeSS which included photography from the photoshoot in W Magazine and seven video segments. The installation ran from 28 March to 3 May 2003 in New York gallery, Deitch Projects. The title of the exhibition is from the song "X-Static Process" on Madonna's 2003 album American Life. One is the statement of "First Edition" on the copyright page with the full print line of "10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1". The second is found on the inside of the front flap of the dustjacket. In the center is printed the original price in the middle of the flap : "U.S. $24.95/Canada $37.95". The book also contains the misspelling of "skitoma" on page 243.The book is a full 9 1/2 inches tall (not to be confused with the book club edition which measures 8 1/2 inches tall). The lettering on the dustjacket is raised. The only shortcoming of this book is a very slight lean to the spine (so slight, we would not even normally mention it for other books). There is very light rubbing along the edges of the dustjacket from normal storage. An excellent copy of this very hard to find signed true edition. Additional photographs are available upon request. "Following the restorartion and publishing of Meryn Peake's illustrations to Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Libanus Press, Peake's family approached the Press with the suggestion that we should produce a companion volume of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. After the first publications of his illustrations, Peake had hope to sell the drawings: he reworked them and colour-washed the papers. None were sold and one was lost. The drawings have been scanned and restored by the Press using the techniques developed with the Alice drawings. The background tints of the original vary. The drawings are printed letterpress to crisply replicate them at the size of the original artwork on a uniform tint to reveal the full effect Peake had in mind with his final reworkings." " Among the treasures of the rich collection of manuscripts at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris is a codex of 168 folios (arabe 5847) with 101 illustrations containing the complete text of what is called al-Maqamat al-Haririyah in a decorated cartouche awkwardly located on the upper part of the first folio. The manuscript is sometimes known as the Schefer Maqamat, because it was given to the Bibliotheque Nationale by the Orientalist scholar Charles Schefer, who probably acquired it somewhere in the Ottoman Empire, where he had spent many years Dozens of manuscripts of Hariri’s Maqamat have been preserved from his own time.Of all the manuscripts with pictures containing Al-Hariri’s great work, (this copy) towers above all others for the quality and variety of its illustrations. It was completed in C. E. 1237 (A. In this way, marbling was elevated to a high art. Ever since its fifteenth-century beginnings, artists in Turkey (and around the world) have experimented with marbling in order to create increasingly complex designs, which are works of art in their own right. Barutcugil has developed his own technique for creating flowers within his marbled patterns, inspired by his wife, Füsun Hanim. In this lovely example, four tulips in lavender and violet bloom against a marbled background in shades of green, pink, blue, and violet. The marbling transitions from delicate washes of green to bolder, defined lines which evoke mountains and sky. Barutcgil's limitless creativity and passion for this traditional art is clear in his work. The paper has been mounted onto a stiff cardboard backing. Measures 18 by 9 inches. Though the pulps are mostly forgotten today, more than a thousand different pulp titles were printed, and over 50,000 individual issues appeared. The most popular pulps were published weekly and oftentimes sold over 500,000 copies per issue. Literally thousands of hardcover books reprinted pulp stories and hundreds of movies were based on pulp fiction. --The pulp field died in the early 1950's, with only a few titles lasting to the later years of that decade. Most genre literature, ranging from westerns to mysteries to science fiction, had already made the jump to digests, slick magazines, or paperback. What didn't survive were mid-length works, novelets and short novels, the bread and butter of pulp magazines, stories too long to be considered a short and too short to be published as a novel. And with them disappeared most series stories featuring continued characters. There was no room in the world of paperback originals for the pulp heroes who filled the pages of Argosy, Adventure, Dime Detective, Wild West Weekly and many other fine magazines. This first set of two volumes reprints the entire Peter the Brazen series by George F. Worts, occasionally writing under his own name and also under the pen name, Loring Brent. There were two series of Peter the Brazen stories written. The first appeared in Argosy in 1919-1920, while the second series appeared in the same magazine from 1930-1935. The second series of adventures is considered by many pulp fans as perhaps the greatest action series ever to be published in the pulps. In particular, the three stories detailing Peter's battles with the Chinese mastermind, the Blue Scorpion, are pulp adventures at their finest. Written by George F. Worts, one of the finest adventure writers of the 20th century, these stories are just as exciting and entertaining as they were when first published. --George F. Worts was an extremely popular pulp magazine writer known not only for this series but also for his Singapore Sammy stories and Gillian Hazeltine mystery novels. Worts, who was born in Ohio on March 6, 1892 was a successful author, businessman and editor. When he was still a young man, he worked as a ship's radio operator much like his character, Peter the Brazen.
