Quicksilver (The Baroque Cycle, Vol. 1)+Rare Bonuses!

William Morrow 2003 - This first volume of Neal Stephenson's epic "Baroque Cycle" is in near-flawless condition. The dust jacket has some minor scuffing and some slight bumps at the foot of the spine. It's protected in a Brodart cover, which was removed to take the photos accompanying this listing. The book itself is unread, clean, bright, and tight. It, like all the Stephenson books from Morrow, are beautiful examples of the bookmaker's art. The book is SIGNED by Neal on the title page, and dated 4 days after publication. But wait, as the commercials say--that's not all! As a free bonus, this special package also includes the limited edition advance reading copy (ARC) of the book--#337 of 435 printed. It's in white wrappers, also unread, and aside for some slight bumping, similarly clean and bright. The ARC is also SIGNED and dated 27 September 2003, 4 days post-pub. As a final perk, we'll also throw in the publisher's printed broadside, sent to booksellers in July of 2003 to announce the cycle. This is incredibly rare, especially in this condition. It briefly describes the three books of the series, and is SIGNED by Neal. Additional photos are available upon request. Check our store for other Neal Stephenson goodies, including other rarities.         Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Signed First Edition)

London: Bloomsbury, 2003. First edition. Fine/Fine. A Fine copy of book five in the Harry Potter series in like dust jacket. Book and jacket pristine except for one small nick to the base of the dust jacket spine (increasingly scarce in this condition). Signed by the author directly on the title page. With bookmark from the June 21, 2003 release laid in, along with bookplate sticker, do not disturb sign and progress stickers (also from the release). Harry returns to a decidedly different Hogwarts experience after Dumbledore is replaced by Dolores Umbridge as the headmaster of Hogwarts. Umbridge refuses to train the students in magic useful in defending against the dark arts, so Harry and his cohorts form "Dumbledore's Army" in an attempt to prepare for battle. The training proves useful when Voldemort lures Harry to a secluded location and a skirmish ensues that claims the life of Sirius Black, ending the book on a darker note than some of the previous works. Fine in Fine dust jacket.

Seven Pillars of Wisdom: a triumph, the complete 1922 'Oxford' text, limited one-volume edition, one of 180 issued thus in quarter Nigerian goatskin, an out-of-series "Press Copy" acquired directly from the publisher

Salisbury, England: Castle Hill Press, 2003. Quarter goatskin. This is the finely bound, first one-volume limited edition of the full 1922 'Oxford' text from Castle Hill Press, the premier editors and fine press publishers of material by and about T. E. Lawrence, founded by Lawrence's official biographer, Jeremy Wilson (1944-2017).  Of 1,225 total copies, the publisher issued just 180 thus, in quarter Nigerian goatskin, bound by The Fine Bindery and featuring raised spine bands, blind rule compartments and transitions, cloth sides, top edge gilt, ribbon place marker, brown endpapers with adjacent illustrated maps, and head and tail bands, and issued in a rigid, cloth slipcase. This out-of-series copy is hand-marked "Press Copy" by the publisher on the title page verso limitation.  We acquired this copy - one of only 2 designated thus - in flawless, as-new condition directly from Jeremy Wilson. This beautiful first one-volume edition not only features text that was “re-checked against copies of the two source documents” leading to “a number of small improvements” but also a scholarly index by Hazel K. Bell (which won the Weatley Medal, Britain's major indexing award), as well as 16 pages of black-and-white photographs taken by Lawrence and others during the Arab Revolt. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is the story of T. E. Lawrence's (1888-1935) remarkable odyssey as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia."  This time defined Lawrence with indelible experience and celebrity, which he would spend the rest of his famously short life struggling to reconcile and reject, to recount and repress.  Lawrence famously resisted publication of his masterwork for the general public during his lifetime. The saga is remarkable. He nearly completed a massive first draft in 1919, only to famously lose it when his briefcase was mislaid at a train station. This first draft was never recovered. At a fever pitch, Lawrence wrote a new 400,000 word draft in 1920. This punishing burst of writing was followed by an equally brutal process of editing by Lawrence. In 1922, a 335,000 word version was carefully circulated to select friends and literary critics - the famous "Oxford Text". George Bernard Shaw called it "a masterpiece". Nonetheless, Lawrence was unready to see it distributed to the public. Finally, in 1926, a further edited 250,000 word "Subscribers' Edition" was produced by Lawrence - but fewer than 200 copies were made, each lavishly and uniquely bound. The process cost Lawrence far more than he made in subscriptions. To recover the loss, Lawrence finally authorized an edition for the general public - but one even further abridged and entitled "Revolt in the Desert". It was only in the summer of 1935, in the weeks following Lawrence's death, that the text of the Subscribers' Edition was finally published for circulation to the general public. However, the fuller "Oxford Text" - a third longer than the shortened text which became so famous - would not be republished until 1997.  Castle Hill took this text from Lawrence's original manuscript in the Bodleian Library and Lawrence's annotated proof copy of the 1922 Oxford Times printing.  Castle Hill Press first published a three-volume limited edition of 752 sets of the Oxford Text, followed by this one-volume limited edition in 2003.  Bibliographic reference: O'Brien A034a.

        Color

Bensalem, Pennsylvania: Ataraxia Studio, 2003. Paperback original. Afterword by Jock Sturges. Autographed and dated with locale by Jock Sturges. From the art book collection of Canadian writer Greg Gatenby who told Greg that this was a rare title because few were sold. Few were sold because he was angry with the publisher who had chosen to crop every image in the book (a fact unknown to Sturges until his author's copies arived in the mail), and because the publisher went bankrupt not long after the book was published, and the unsold copies disappeared, probably pulped. The unauthorized cropping thus explains Jock's handwritten note, on my copy, beneath the photo of Pauline: "Pauline actually does have a derriere!" Rare. Interesting wth the handwritten note. Bumped corner, otherwise a fine copy. . Signed. Softcover. Very Good.

Original collage design for an advertisement for Carlton & United Breweries Ltd, Melbourne

Original collage of carefully cut-out coloured papers, 595 x 397 mm, titled lower centre 'Carlton & United Breweries Ltd / Melbourne Victoria Australia', signed in pencil lower right 'Dennis Ogden 83'. A stunning modernist design, of two young men enjoying a beverage on St Kilda Pier, Melbourne, with the historic kiosk (sadly now burnt down in 2003) in the background. While created in the eighties, through the use of a vintage font and modernist style, the advertisement has a distinctly forties feel to it. Ogden was a prominent commercial advertising designer active in Melbourne from the 70s - 90s.

Stuttgart: Thieme Georg Verlag, Auflage: 1 (2003). Auflage: 1 (2003). Hardcover . 27,4 x 20 x 4,8 cm. Orthopädie und Traumatologie Erwin G.         One Hundred Years of Solitude

New York: Harper Collins, 2003. First edition of the re-issue of the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original half cloth. Translated from the Spanish by Gregory Rabassa. Signed by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and signed by the translator, Gregory Rabassa on the title page, who has added the classic quote from this novel, "Lost in the solitude of his immense power, he began to lose direction. Gregory Rabassa." Fine in a fine dust jacket. A unique example. "One Hundred Years of Solitude chronicles the life of Macondo, a fictional town based in part of Garcia Marquez's hometown of Aracataca, Columbia, and seven generations of the founding family, the Buendias. He creates a complex world with characters and events that display the full range of human experience. For the reader, the pleasure of the novel derives from its fast-paced narrative, humor, vivid characters, and fantasy elements. In this 'magic realism', the author combines imaginative flights of fancy with social realism to give us images of levitating priests, flying carpets, a four-year-long rainstorm, and a young woman ascending to heaven while folding sheets" (NYPL Books of the Century 31).

Small 1mo broadside (42.5 x 29.5 cm). With the woodcut Medici coat of arms of Pope Leo X (47 x 40 mm), paragraph marks (2 sizes) and a Maltese cross (1 size) to mark days when indulgences were available for all sins and for the release of the soul from purgatory respectively. Set in two columns in a rotunda gothic type, with the first line of the title in a larger rotunda and the rest of the title, other headings and note at the foot in a textura gothic type. Attached with 2 paper hinges to a modern paperboard.

N.R. Miedema, Rompilgerfürer in Spätmittelalter und Früher Neuzeit: die "Indulgentiae ecclesiarium urbis Romae" (deutsch/niederländisch) (2003), n4 (pp. 66-67) & section 3.3 (Die "Stationes cum indulgentiis", pp. 203-222): the present copy; Nijhoff & Kronenberg 4179 (abbreviated in the addenda 018): the present copy. The only recorded copy of the only surviving Dutch-language broadside published before ca. 1590 concerning indulgences: a calendar indicating the days throughout the year when indulgences of various kinds could be "earned", presumably by making payments to the Church, either at the seven "station churches" in Rome or at churches elsewhere. The calendar begins on Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent), which, during Leo X's reign (1513-1521), fell in the period 12 February to 7 March, and ends with the third Sunday in Advent, which would fall in the period 11 to 17 December. The two columns have 96 entries, most for a specific day but some for periods. The last entry (following the third Sunday of Advent) notes that there are many more indulgences available, too numerous to mention, confirmed by many Popes, including Sylvester, Gregory, Pelagius and Paschal. Many of the entries are associated with the veneration of a saint at a station (presumably on the saint's feast day) and they name the day of the week, the saint to whom the station was devoted, and the length of time for which the sins would be absolved (ranging from 3000 to 28,000 years!). A three-line note running across the foot of the broadside states that any Christians can earn these indulgences at any time in their lives after making devotions in the church where they pray, and that Pope Leo X has granted privileges and letters of indulgence for the benefit of the rebuilding of Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome. The present calendar was probably published ca. 1516 and Martin Luther protested against Leo X's sale of indulgences for this rebuilding, one of the most important points in his 95 theses, published in 1517, which symbolized the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. No printed letter of indulgence in Dutch is known to survive, and the present printed broadside in Dutch concerning indulgences is the only one known to survive from before ca. 1590. A similar broadside in German probably appeared shortly after the present Dutch one. Indulgences, and broadsides concerning them, were ephemera that inevitably survived only in very small numbers, and such items in the Dutch language probably circulated in lower levels of society than Latin ones, reducing their chances of survival still further. The official status of the Protestant Church in the Dutch Republic from the late 16th-century, moreover, discouraged people from keeping such tokens of Catholicism. Though the Dutch Republic was the most tolerant nation of its day, where many Catholics practiced their religion without serious interference, the Dutch Calvinist factions continued campaigns against Catholics and occasionally got the upper hand.Formerly folded horizontally and vertically, with a small tear between the two columns where the folds cross and a few minor spots, but otherwise in very good condition and wholly untrimmed. A unique document providing valuable information about the Dutch use of indulgences on the eve of the Protestant Reformation.

This is the finely bound, first one-volume limited edition of the full 1922 'Oxford' text from Castle Hill Press, the premier editors and fine press publishers of material by and about T.E. Lawrence, founded by Lawrence's official biographer, Jeremy Wilson (1944-2017).  Of 1,225 total copies, the publisher issued just 180 thus, in quarter Nigerian goatskin, bound by The Fine Bindery and featuring raised spine bands, blind rule compartments and transitions, cloth sides, top edge gilt, ribbon place marker, brown endpapers with adjacent illustrated maps, and head and tail bands and issued in a rigid, cloth slipcase. This out-of-series copy is hand-marked "Press Copy" by the publisher on the title page verso limitation.  We acquired this copy in flawless, as-new condition directly from Jeremy Wilson. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is the story of T.E. Bibliographic reference: see O'Brien A034a.

        Efsun Çiçegi (Enchanting Beauty Flowers).

(Istanbul): Ebristan Yayinlari, 2003. Original marbled paper by the premier marbling artist in Turkey, Hikmet Barutçugil. Signed and dated by the artist. Ebru, or marbling, is one of the oldest arts in Turkey. In addition to being used in book binding and design, it was often used as a background for calligraphy. In this way, marbling was elevated to a high art. Ever since its fifteenth-century beginnings, artists in Turkey (and around the world) have experimented with marbling in order to create increasingly complex designs, which are works of art in their own right. Barutcugil has developed his own technique for creating flowers within his marbled patterns, inspired by his wife, Füsun Hanim. In this lovely example, four tulips in lavender and violet bloom against a marbled background in shades of green, pink, blue, and violet. The marbling transitions from delicate washes of green to bolder, defined lines which evoke mountains and sky. Barutcgil's limitless creativity and passion for this traditional art is clear in his work. The paper has been mounted onto a stiff cardboard backing. Measures 18 by 9 inches. A very fine example of Turkish marbling, which is offered with "Efsun Cicergi," Barutcugil's fully illustrated text on Efsun Flowers.
