Kingdom of Fear

NY: Simon & Schuster. (2003). Nonfiction; essays and memoirs. Subtitled "Loathsome Secrets of a Star-Crossed Child in the Final Days of the American Century." Signed by Thompson on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket, with a flyer announcing the signing laid in. Thompson did a very small number of signings in his career: he was too volatile a personality. At this signing the ground rules were that he would only sign copies of this book, not his earlier ones, and when someone brought him a first edition of Hell's Angels and asked him to sign it he reportedly threw the book across the room. . First Edition. Hardcover.

FAC ET SPERA : Joannes Maire, Publisher, Printer and Bookseller in Leiden, 1603-1657 : A Bibliography of his Publications

't Goy: Hes & De Graaf. 2003. 9061942292 . Orig. cloth binding. 792 pp. Ills. (Bibliotheca Bibliographica Neerlandica, 39). With CD-Rom containing the images of the title-pages. From the publisher : During the seventeenth century, Holland s Golden Age, printing and publishing became a flourishing industry. In Leiden, where the presence of a university contributed to that success, Joannes Maire built up, in the course of more than fifty years, a list of at least 527 titles, especially in the fields of medicine, theology and classical philology. Although he is nowadays chiefly remembered as the original publisher of René Descartes's Discours de la methode (1637), his contemporaries knew him better from his numerous editions of works of Desiderius Erasmus. Maire's cooperation in his earlier years as a publisher with the Raphelengii and Thomas Erpenius, professor of Oriental languages in Leiden, and the availability of his books at the fairs of Frankfurt and Leipzig spread his name rapidly in academic circles. Dr. Breugelmans's book has several interesting elements. It is the first one to pay attention to a single Leiden printer/publisher on such a large scale. Extensive bibliographical descriptions of Maire s books form the greater part of this publication and the inclusion of their title-pages on a CD-ROM is a novelty too. An introduction, giving substantial information on Maire and his authors and on other aspects of his list, such as the phenomenon of parallel editions , supplies valuable further information on the working methods of a printer of that period. The inventory of Maire's estate proved to be an important source for his contacts with his colleagues, among them the Officina Plantiniana in Antwerp. .

        Kuthan's Menagerie Completed

Vancouver: Heavenly Monkey. Fine+. 2003. Limited Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Printed on Golden Hind paper, a laid sheet, one side only and folded. Reid explains this both helped solve a problem with see-through and bulk up the book (which consists of 13 sheets forming 26 pages, from half title to colophon). The pages were printed landscape, and the sheets bound along the open edge. A cornerstone in Fine Press history in exceptionally Fine condition; Kuthan's Menagerie of Interesting Zoo Animals was published in 1960 from the private press of Robert and Felicity Reid (under the imprint Nevermore Press). It has since become famous in the history of fine printing in Canada, not just for Kuthan's exquisite multi-color linocuts of animals, but also for the fact that only 60 of the edition's 130 copies were ever bound; the balance remained in the bindery, eventually forgotten but luckily, not lost. The unbound copies were purchased from the original binder's estate by Vancouver booksellers Stephen Lunsford and William Hoffer, in the late '80s; all of the 50 complete copies remaining have been issued through Heavenly Monkey. Rather than attempt to recreate the original binding, the remaining copies were issued in the livre d'artiste manner, loose, with a new wrap and custom-made clamshell box. No further copies of Kuthan's Menagerie exist; the 50 copies issued in 2003 through Heavenly Monkey complete the edition .

        TRYING TO DANCE

Stockholm, Sweden: Journal Stockholm, 2003. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Stockholm, Sweden: Journal Stockholm, 2003. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. Unpaginated. Artist Book. One of the most beautiful photography books of our time. Limited Edition of 2000 copies. The book is now very rare. A brilliant production by J. H. Engstrom, Patric Leo, and Gosta Flemming: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with full-page photographic reproduction pasted in front and metallic-silver titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by J. H. Engstrom. Except for the credits and a brief text excerpt by Engstrom that is printed on the back cover, there is no text. Printed on pristine-white thick coated stock paper in Stockholm, Sweden to the very highest standards. This copy comes in a specially handmade gray cloth slipcase. Without DJ, as issued. Presents one of the landmark photographic projects of our time. "A non-linear juxtaposition of views of Engstrom's everyday surroundings, ranging from self-portraits and nudes to landscapes and interiors. The book does not offer the viewer an overall narrative that would subsume the meaning of the single image. It is a visual stream-of-consciousness monologue, an ongoing succession of moments that retain an importance of their own, fragments of relentlessly passing time. The impression of looking at memories, rather than documentary images, is heightened by the variety of the photographs" (Martin Jaeggi). "A masterpiece of enigma and indeterminacy. In the vanguard of a new genre that depicts a veiled, oblique, almost novelistic view of modern life, especially modern relationships" (Martin Parr and Gerry Badger). "I can only make photographs of what I feel, of what results from my encounters with people. In this regard, my work is completely subjective. At the same time, I am interested in objectivity, in the fact that since you take photographs, you always deal with reality. And in this respect, I am not interested in subjectivity. It's a paradox" (J. H. Engstrom). It is a paradox unique to photography and to Engstrom's "pull-of-a-dream" images. An absolute "must-have" title for J. H. Engstrom and contemporary photography book collectors. This title is now very highly collectible. This is one very few copies still available online, is beautifully encased in a custom-made cloth slipcase, and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. A very rare copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white and color plates. "Trying To Dance" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the most brilliant living photographers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER J. H. ENGSTROM TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 9197418269.
