Kuthan's Menagerie Completed

Vancouver: Heavenly Monkey. Fine+. 2003. Limited Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Printed on Golden Hind paper, a laid sheet, one side only and folded. Reid explains this both helped solve a problem with see-through and bulk up the book (which consists of 13 sheets forming 26 pages, from half title to colophon). The pages were printed landscape, and the sheets bound along the open edge. A cornerstone in Fine Press history in exceptionally Fine condition; Kuthan's Menagerie of Interesting Zoo Animals was published in 1960 from the private press of Robert and Felicity Reid (under the imprint Nevermore Press). It has since become famous in the history of fine printing in Canada, not just for Kuthan's exquisite multi-color linocuts of animals, but also for the fact that only 60 of the edition's 130 copies were ever bound; the balance remained in the bindery, eventually forgotten but luckily, not lost. The unbound copies were purchased from the original binder's estate by Vancouver booksellers Stephen Lunsford and William Hoffer, in the late '80s; all of the 50 complete copies remaining have been issued through Heavenly Monkey. Rather than attempt to recreate the original binding, the remaining copies were issued in the livre d'artiste manner, loose, with a new wrap and custom-made clamshell box. No further copies of Kuthan's Menagerie exist; the 50 copies issued in 2003 through Heavenly Monkey complete the edition .

        TRYING TO DANCE

As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. Unpaginated. Artist Book. One of the most beautiful photography books of our time. Limited Edition of 2000 copies. The book is now very rare. A brilliant production by J. H. Engstrom, Patric Leo, and Gosta Flemming: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with full-page photographic reproduction pasted in front and metallic-silver titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by J. H. Engstrom. Except for the credits and a brief text excerpt by Engstrom that is printed on the back cover, there is no text. Printed on pristine-white thick coated stock paper in Stockholm, Sweden to the very highest standards. This copy comes in a specially handmade gray cloth slipcase. Without DJ, as issued. Presents one of the landmark photographic projects of our time. "A non-linear juxtaposition of views of Engstrom's everyday surroundings, ranging from self-portraits and nudes to landscapes and interiors. The book does not offer the viewer an overall narrative that would subsume the meaning of the single image. It is a visual stream-of-consciousness monologue, an ongoing succession of moments that retain an importance of their own, fragments of relentlessly passing time. The impression of looking at memories, rather than documentary images, is heightened by the variety of the photographs" (Martin Jaeggi). "A masterpiece of enigma and indeterminacy. In the vanguard of a new genre that depicts a veiled, oblique, almost novelistic view of modern life, especially modern relationships" (Martin Parr and Gerry Badger). "I can only make photographs of what I feel, of what results from my encounters with people. In this regard, my work is completely subjective. At the same time, I am interested in objectivity, in the fact that since you take photographs, you always deal with reality. And in this respect, I am not interested in subjectivity. It's a paradox" (J. H. Engstrom). It is a paradox unique to photography and to Engstrom's "pull-of-a-dream" images. An absolute "must-have" title for J. H. Engstrom and contemporary photography book collectors. This title is now very highly collectible. This is one very few copies still available online, is beautifully encased in a custom-made cloth slipcase, and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. A very rare copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white and color plates. "Trying To Dance" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the most brilliant living photographers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER J. H. ENGSTROM TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 9197418269.

        Somewhere Else

[New York. 2003]. One of 20 copies, each signed in pencil by the author / artist and hand- numbered on the colophon, all on Magnagni Pescia cream paper. Page size: 10-5/8 x 7-5/8"; 20pp. Bound: loose folios in original putty-colored Twinrocker rustler handmade paper wrappers printed in black; housed in salmon-colored cloth clamshell box by Claudia Cohen. Printed letterpress in Garamond light in 18pt. at The Grenfell Press in New York by the artist / author. Each page is double-spread with the text going across both pages enfolded by the abstract images. The images are original lino cuts for the gray and woodcuts for the black, editioned by the author with the assistance of Leslie Miller at The Grenfell Press. This is a beautiful book with the black images floating on top of the gray lino cuts, giving a depth to the page that is completely unexpected. The poem leads the viewer / reader to reflect on what is really seen, light distortion, and ultimately what is real. The letterpress text and original graphic art lead the viewer / reader to the same reflection. This is a fascinating confluence of word and image - deceptively simple and elegant.

Study of Two Pears / Etude de deux poires. A Poem by Wallace Stevens with a translation into French by Bernard Noel and mezzotints by Judith Rothchild

Verdigris Press Octon, France: Verdigris Press. 2003. One of 44 copies from a total issue of 50, all on Hahnemuhle paper, each copy signed in pencil by the artist, Judith Rothchild, and the printer, Mark Lintott, and hand-numbered in pencil; the 6 deluxe copies with an original copper plate and housed in custom-made clamshell box by Mark Lintott. 20pp; page size: 11 x 11-13/16". Bound: leporello loose in original wrappers that are green, brown, and gold screen-printed paper by Judith Rothchild, the title printed in dark green in French and English on the front and in dark brown on the brown spine, housed in publisher's slipcase of the same screen-printed paper by Rothchild.Judith Rothchild's mezzotints are extraordinarily beautiful with 9 separate plates (including title page) of single and double pears. There are pears blind engraved on the white spaces of the pages. The text is hand-set letterpress and was printed on an 1867 Albion press by Mark Lintott with Wallace Stevens' English verse in black and Bernard Noel's French translation following it in brown. Judith Rothchild's affinity for objects from the natural world - pomegranates, figs, grapevines - is confirmed in this splendid edition of Wallace Stevens' verse. It is about as lovely a book as I've seen - the velvety mezzotints infusing a mystery and wonder for the miracle of this fruit so taken for granted. Rothchild's sculptural pears are indeed what Stevens' meant when he wrote, "Opusculum paedagogum. / The pears are not viols, / Nudes or bottles. They resemble nothing else." See an Image.

6 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS BY CARROLL in The Henry Benyon Crichton Photograph Album of 54 photographs.

This album of 54 early photographs includes six that are definitely known to be by Carroll, three that are "most probably" by Carroll and five that are "possibly" by Carroll - this according to Edward Wakeling (co-author of 'Lewis Carroll Photographer') who prepared a report on this album in 2003. FULL DETAILS & PHOTOGRAPHIC FILES CAN BE SENT ON REQUEST. * The six confirmed Carroll photographs are: 1) Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), assisted self portrait, taken on 2 June 1857 taken in the Deanery garden, Christ Church, image number 235. "Carroll was assisted in this self portrait by Lorina Liddell. He noted in his Journal for 2nd June 1857: "To try the lens, I took a picture of myself for which Ina took off the cap, and of course considered it all her doing!"" Taylor and Wakeling, p.177. This example has been trimmed to make a head-and-shoulders image. There are four other known original images of this photograph. 2) Osborne Gordon (1813-1883), MA Christ Church, taken by Carroll on either 3 or 4 July 1860, image number 595. "Gordon was Senior Censor, Reader in Greek and Rhetoric at Christ Church. There are two other known original images of this photograph. 3) Edward Stokes (1823-1863), MA Christ Church, taken by Carroll in June 1857, image number 217. There are three other known original images of this photograph.4) Thomas Jones Prout (1823-1909), MA Christ Church, taken by Carroll in June 1857, image number 238. There are three other known original images of this photograph:5) Thomas Vere Bayne (1829-1908), MA Christ Church, taken by Carroll during the spring of 1857, image number 181. Bayne was a lifelong friend of Carroll's. There are three other known original images of this photograph. 6) Charles Carr Clerke (1799-1877), DD Christ Church, taken by Carroll during the spring of 1857, image number 180. Clerke was Sub-Dean at Christ Church (1852) and chaplain to the Bishop of Winchester 1869-73. There is one other known original image of this photograph. * Because Carroll often printed very few copies of his photographs and his own records inexact, firm authentification of some photographs through comparison with another known example is impossible. However, the following photographs in the Crichton album would appear to Wakeling to be comparable with known Carroll photographs. In his opinion, they are most probably by Carroll: 1. Christ Church Tom Quad, with figures by Tom Gate, 224 x 176mm. 2. View across Christ Church Tom Quad looking towards the North Range, 171 x 225mm. 3. Portrait of Acland, 182 x 138mm. There are 5 further photographs - all portraits - that use a sitter's chair that also has featured in known Carroll photographs, and therefore could also possibly be by Carroll. FULL DETAILS AND IMAGES OF ALL THE 54 PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE ALBUM WILL BE SENT ON REQUEST.
