        The Luck of the Bodkins

298 pages. Small octavo (7 1/2" x 5 1/4") issued in green cloth with dark green lettering to cover and spine. (First's January 2003 pg 45) First American edition. The Luck of the Bodkins first published in the United Kingdom on October 11, 1935 by Herbert Jenkins, and in the United States on January 3, 1936 by Little, Brown and Company. The two editions are significantly different, though the plot remains the same. The novel was serialised in Passing Show magazine (UK) from 21 September to 23 November 1935, and this version was published as the UK edition. For its US magazine appearance, in the Red Book, between August 1935 and January 1936, Wodehouse re-wrote the story, reducing its length, and this became the US book edition. The story concerns the complicated love life of amiable young Drone Monty Bodkin, the nephew of Sir Gregory Parsloe-Parsloe, who had previously appeared in Heavy Weather (1933), when he was employed as the latest in the long line of Lord Emsworth's secretaries. The plot of The Luck of the Bodkins continues into Pearls, Girls and Monty Bodkin (1972), in which Monty, the object of his affections, hockey-playing Gertrude Butterwick, and movie-mogul Ivor Llewellyn all return.Condition:Some light foxing to fore edge pages, points lightly rubbed.       Limited Editions Club. Fine with no dust jacket. 2003. First Edition. Hardcover. 14 x 18.5"; A Tribute to Cavafy: A Selection of Poems with Photogravures by Duane Michals and Translations by Edmund Keeley & Philip Sherrard. Limited edition of this collection of poetry by the Greek poet Cavafy, signed by American photographer Duane Michals on the limitation page. This is number 228 of 300. This elephant folio is bound in purple cloth with slight fading. Inset black leather label with stamped white lettering on front cover. Volume is in excellent condition. This book contains Cavafy"s original Greek printed interlinearly with the English translation with the text set in rare metal types and the pages printed by hand on Arches vellum. Illustrated with photogravures by Duane Michals. This edition was designed and printed by Dan Carr & Julia Ferrari. The photogravures were made and hand printed by Jon Goodman in Florence, Massachusetts. Clamshell case with printed leather spine label and velvet lining is in fine condition. Case measures approximately 15" x 20". Club Newsletter specific to this volume is laid-in. Constantine P. Cavafy was a renowned Greek poet who lived in Alexandria and worked as a journalist and civil servant. He published 154 poems; dozens more remained incomplete or in sketch form. His most important poetry was written after his fortieth birthday. Cavafy was instrumental in the revival and recognition of Greek poetry both at home and abroad. His poems are, typically, concise but intimate evocations of real or literary figures and milieux that have played roles in Greek culture. Uncertainty about the future, sensual pleasures, the moral character and psychology of individuals, homosexuality, and a fatalistic existential nostalgia are some of the defining themes. Besides his subjects, unconventional for the time, his poems also exhibit a skilled and versatile craftsmanship, which is almost completely lost in translation. [citation needed] Cavafy was a perfectionist, obsessively refining every single line of his poetry. His mature style was a free iambic form, free in the sense that verses rarely rhyme and are usually from 10 to 17 syllables. In his poems, the presence of rhyme usually implies irony. Cavafy drew his themes from personal experience, along with a deep and wide knowledge of history, especially of the Hellenistic era. Many of his poems are pseudo-historical, or seemingly historical, or accurately, but quirkily, historical. One of Cavafy's most important works is his 1904 poem "Waiting for the Barbarians". In 1911, Cavafy wrote Ithaca, inspired by the Homeric return journey of Odysseus to his home island, as depicted in the Odyssey. The poem's theme is that enjoyment of the journey of life, and the increasing maturity of the soul as that journey continues, are all the traveler can ask for. Almost all of Konstantinos Kavafis' work was in Greek; yet, his poetry remained unrecognized in Greece until after the publication of his first anthology in 1935. He is known for his prosaic use of metaphors, his brilliant use of historical imagery, and his aesthetic perfectionism. These attributes, amongst others, have assured him an enduring place in the literary pantheon of the Western World. Translor: Edmund Keeley - Edmund Leroy Keeley is an author, translator, and Charles Barnwell Straut Professor Emeritus of English at Princeton University. He is a prize-winning novelist and a noted expert on Greek poets C. P. Cavafy, George Seferis, Odysseus Elytis and Yannis Ritsos, and on post-Second World War Greek history. , Philip Sherrard - Philip Sherrard was a British author, translator, and philosopher. His work includes important translations of Modern Greek poets, and books on Modern Greek literature and culture, metaphysics, theology, art and aesthetics. A pioneer of Modern Greek studies in England, he was influential in making major Greek poets of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries known in the English-speaking world. He was also a prolific writer on theological and philosophical themes, addressing the origins of the social and spiritual crisis he believed was occurring in the developed world, and specifically exploring modern attitudes towards the environment from a Christian perspective. ; Signed by Illustrator .

Handshake Triptych : Alice Did Not Like Shaking Hands With Either of Them First : Sketch for Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There

Los Angeles: The Artist. 2003. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. F Original Painting. S Original Painting. Fine. Colored ink and gouache original painting / drawings, signed in pencil by the artist, created Spring, 2003 for a future edition. Series of 3 sheets; individual sheet size 5 1/4 x 8 1/8 inches. The title is an attribution, a modified quotation taken from the text based on the artist's marked copy of the work, and should be considered a working title. A unique original preliminary painting / sketch to illustrate Lewis Carroll's "Through the Looking Glass", the sequel to his celebrated edition of "Alice in Wonderland", winner of the Gold Medal from the New York Society of Illustrators in 2001. McGraw's colorful and vibrant work inspires children of all ages while not avoiding some of the edgier aspects of this remarkably complex work, generally considered to be Carroll's most psychologically involved. although no date for the full edition is set, this exhibition of work clearly shows that when published it will equal his award-winning "Alice". McGraw is an illustrator and artist who has worked with such authors as Janet Lewis, W. D. Snodgrass, Gary Soto, Robert Pinsky, et al., and reinterpreted classic texts by Carroll, Berthold Brecht, John Steinbeck, among others. Carroll's "Alice" has been the subject of McGraw's fascination for years, as he considers the character to have become the archetype of innocence in Anglo-American culture. This is from his first full-scale attempt to address Carroll's sequel, "Through the Looking Glass".

        The Poetry of Chance Encounters

Minneapolis, MN: Mnemonic Press. 2003. One of 35 numbered copies, all on Rives BFK, from a total edition of 40 (35 + 5 artist proof copies). Page size: 9 inches x 6-1/8 inches; 42pp. Bound by Jill Jevne: full brown box calf, matching calf edged and gold paste paper by Claire Maziarcyzk. matching calf over boards slipcase. The book contains sixteen visual poems on multi-color fields, each imprinted with an icon in 22 karat gold. Each printed page has a total of five press runs, including a varnish over the icon and field with the impression of the gold leaf imparting an embossed effect to the icon. The basic typeface is Lydian, a stressed sans serif chosen to complement the treatment of image and type throughout the book. The selected texts include: "Alchemy of the Word" from A SEASON IN HELL by Arthur Rimbaud, "Visual Poetry: Altered Text by Helmut Lohr," "Daffadilly: A Concrete Poem" by Phillip Gallo, Excerpt from Gregg Shorthand: A light-line phonography for the million, and "Walking Poem" by Harriet Bart and David Cole, among others. Each text, or musical score, has an image, according to the artist / author, weaving weights or glass bowls or centuries old figurines of household gods or goddesses, printed in gold. The artist&#39;s statement reveals this a contemporary book of devotions, an illuminated manuscript of the surrealist games of chance. It brings together in evocative pairings of image and text, the artist&#39;s love of the written language and her passion for the found objects which have been part of the iconography of her sculpture for years. <br>See an <A HREF= >Image.</A><br>

The conscious and subconscious decisions made in editing the photographs is the real work of &#39;A Storybook Life&#39; " (Philip-Lorca DiCorcia) .         Kuthan&#39;s Menagerie Completed

Vancouver: Heavenly Monkey. Fine+. 2003. Limited Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Printed on Golden Hind paper, a laid sheet, one side only and folded. Reid explains this both helped solve a problem with see-through and bulk up the book (which consists of 13 sheets forming 26 pages, from half title to colophon). The pages were printed landscape, and the sheets bound along the open edge. A cornerstone in Fine Press history in exceptionally Fine condition; Kuthan&#39;s Menagerie of Interesting Zoo Animals was published in 1960 from the private press of Robert and Felicity Reid (under the imprint Nevermore Press). It has since become famous in the history of fine printing in Canada, not just for Kuthan&#39;s exquisite multi-color linocuts of animals, but also for the fact that only 60 of the edition&#39;s 130 copies were ever bound; the balance remained in the bindery, eventually forgotten but luckily, not lost. The unbound copies were purchased from the original binder&#39;s estate by Vancouver booksellers Stephen Lunsford and William Hoffer, in the late &#39;80s; all of the 50 complete copies remaining have been issued through Heavenly Monkey. Rather than attempt to recreate the original binding, the remaining copies were issued in the livre d&#39;artiste manner, loose, with a new wrap and custom-made clamshell box. No further copies of Kuthan&#39;s Menagerie exist; the 50 copies issued in 2003 through Heavenly Monkey complete the edition .

        Nurse Paintings

New York: Barbara Gladstone Gallery, 2003. Fine in illustrated wrappers.. First Edition. Small quarto. A unique, reinvented copy of the pulped first edition of Prince&#39;s nurse catalogue, with a SIGNED and dated DVD sticker on the front cover, and a Mad Magazine sticker covering the face of the cover nurse. The internal pages of the book have been intentionally taped together in two sections, leaving only four viewable pages. On the first of these pages Prince has written a list of 16 ailments, diseases, weapons, and unfortunate conditions: "Bad beath / Warts / Cancer / Cancors (sic) / Smelly Feet / Smart Bombs / Blitzgrieg / Pandemic / Outbreak / Ebola Virus / H-Bomb / TNT / Glock / AK-47 / Headache / Scar Tissue." The list of "plagues" is a trope which seldom appears in Prince&#39;s work; two examples on nurse paintings can been seen in the Guggenheim retrospective.

Unpaginated; 27 full-page, five-color b&w photographic plates; 14 x 15 inches. Limited to 400 trade copies. SIGNED BY GOLDBLATT and dated "10.8.07." Out of print. Particulars is a body of photographs rooted in Goldblatt&#39;s time spent as a tailor. "Of my life experiences, one that was crucial was that of working in my father&#39;s shop, where I acquired a consciousness of bodily particulars that was technical rather than subjective." The images are of just this, bodily particulars: Bejeweled hands, street-worn feet, crossed legs, and overweight knees fill the frame and surprisingly reveal a great deal about the individuals as much as a facial portrait could. Only 200 of the copies were published with dust jackets. Absolutely gorgeous production, from the dioxin- and chlorine-free paper to the hand-binding to the 5-color printing. 2004 winner of the book award at the Rencontres d&#39;Arles photography festival in France. See Parr & Badger: The Photobook, Vol II, p114-115. Standard shipping for this volume includes packaging with padding in a box, shipping, insurance and tracking within the US by Priority Mail.
