Les dessins de François Boucher

Scala - Paris 2003. 1 Volume/1. Fine Condition. Original mixed media work incorporating watercolor, pen and ink and sixty of the artists pen nibs embedded in a splash of clear liquid adhesive. Dated by the artist 13 Oct. 2003. Executed by the artist for a fundraising auction for Ruminator Books, formerly The Hungry Mind, of St. Paul, Minnesota. The auction was kind of a last minute affair that was hastily promoted and the piece didn't meet its reserve and Ruminator subsequently closed its doors after a long and successful run as one of the countrys most prominent independent bookstores. The piece measures 24 x 30 inches (60.96 x 76.20 cm.) framed to 33.5 x 40.5 inches (85.09 x 102.87 cm.). Spectacular.

(SZABO, JOSEPH). Szabo, Joseph. Introduction by Cameron Crowe. JOSEPH SZABO: TEENAGE - DELUXE BOXED EDITION WITH A SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH. Signed by the Photographer - with a b&w Photograph. Los Angeles: Greybull Press, 2003. First Edition 1/50 Deluxe. Square 4to. Pictorial Boards, Boxed. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. np (168pp), profusely illustrated in b&w. Designed by Lorraine Wild. Joseph Szabo's seldom-seen first book "Almost Grown" has become a photographic cult classic. An inspiration for the look of Sofia Coppola's "The Virgin Suicides", its matter-of-fact snaps of seventies Long Island teenagers captured at school and the beach are keenly telling of that time in our lives when social acceptance and what clothes we wore meant nearly everything. In "Teenage", his first anthology of work since 1978, here again are the students of Malverne High School (where Szabo taught photography from 1972 to 1999) along with a charming introduction by director Cameron Crowe, whose teens of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" occupied a fictional, yet parallel universe. The photographer's intimacy with these kids is uncanny - he still seems like a fly on the wall even when his subjects are staring straight into the lens. A pristine copy of the deluxe edition limited to fifty copies only housed in a printed pictorial clamshell box along with the black and white photograph "Night Owls on Broadway" SIGNED AND NUMBERED 44/50 by Joseph Szabo on the recto in ink, as issued. New York City, NY: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2003. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2003. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 126 pages. The author's book-length essay on subject and last book. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Susan Sontag's last book, a brilliant and provocative meditation on war photography. A sequel-of-sorts to her classic, "On Photography" (1977), Sontag revisits some of the very same issues she raised in her earlier book and subjects them to renewed, closer scrutiny. A relatively short book, it is very intense and passionate, but ranges nimbly across a breadth of cultural and intellectual references. She re-evaluates what photography can do to create awareness, arouse indignation and sympathy, and make people act on the basis of photographs (rather than narrative accounts) of other people's suffering. Her key reference points are Virginia Woolf's classic book, "Three Guineas", and her own book. Virginia Woolf famously argued that men and women can never have a meeting of minds about the subject of war because men make war, women do not. Sontag eviscerates Woolf's thesis and then, without missing a beat, turns to her own book and eviscerates many of its positions too, for being insensitive, incomplete, and in many respects, simply wrong-headed. Her tough-minded re-evaluation of Woolf and her own book is something both critics and admirers of Susan Sontag have come to expect from her. She was the intellectual par excellence, who never hesitated to re-examine her positions, ask questions, and change her mind. Were it not for her formidable intellect, her agonizing self-examination would be merely interesting. A "must-have" title for Susan Sontag collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Susan Sontag. This title is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Most copies available online have major flaws or are subsequent printings. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the MacArthur Genius Grant, the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1977 for "On Photography", the National Book Award in 2000 for "In America", and the Jerusalem Prize in 2001. Shimon Peres, in awarding the Jerusalem Prize, described Sontag as "one of the world's finest writers and greatest minds". One of the most influential and important American writer-intellectuals of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER SUSAN SONTAG TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0374248583.
