The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time [Signed, with Trial Jacket, Postcards, T-Shirt, and Mobile]

London: Jonathan Cape. 2003. Winner of both the Whitbread Award and the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize, The Curious Incident was released simultaneously in an edition for adults (by Jonathan Cape) and for children (by David Fickling). This copy, which is signed by Haddon, is the adult edition, in both the issued dust jacket and an unused trial dust jacket (white, with the poodle photo on both front and back, and only the Ian McEwan blurb, here on the back rather than the front panel). Together with two copies of the Fickling jacket; a "Curious?" promotional T-shirt (blue, with stabbed dog graphic); a hanging cardboard mobile with five Volkswagens (2 red, 1 blue, 1 black, 1 yellow, therefore signifying neither a Good Day nor a Black Day); a 4-page promotional flyer (with the McEwan blurb); and a set of five Fickling promotional postcards with Volkswagens of varying colors and featuring either a quote from the book, from the publisher, or from Ian McEwan, Arthur Golden, or Oliver Sacks. Curious Incident was adapted to both film and stage, winning an Olivier Award for Best New Play. An interesting collection comprising the book itself; a number of ephemeral promotional pieces, mostly of a playful nature; and unreleased publisher's production material, all of it giving a sense of the life that the book itself took on upon publication and in its subsequent incarnations. All items fine. . First Edition. Hardcover.

THE NO. 1 LADIES' DETECTIVE AGENCY (signed 1st) Number one ladies detective agency

Polygon, Edinburgh 2003 - Polygon, 2003, Edinburgh, 8vo, 213 pages. VG+/VG+ 1st edition 1st printing, Polygon 2003. SIGNED by Alexander McCall Smith directly to title page without inscription. Signed in person in NJ in 2010. When I presented this book to Alexander McCall Smith to sign, he advised that this edition is quite rare as it was printed in error as Polygon did not own the right to publish the hardcover, only the paperback and as a result, only a small amount of copies were printed. This copy is UNREAD. Tight and clean. The only thing keeping this copy from grading fine is a touch of shelfwear that has rubbed the brown color off some of the corner tips and around edges of spine at foot and crown. Crown of backstrip lightly pushed. DJ is bright and attractive. 2 small surface scuffs on rear dj panel near upper right corner where it looks like someone fingernailed the jacked in an effort to remove a small price sticker as there is a faint outline still there. not very obtrusive as the scuff actually mixes in to the light whitish/baby blue color on rear of dj. Most minor shelfwear to upper edge. While it appears there is a tiny, tiny chip on the crown of DJ backstrip, it is actually just rolled, as all paper is still there. Please keep in mind, this is very, very small. Flaws are overstated. This copy is much nicer than it sounds! DJ is printed without any price. There is a barcode on the rear. The story takes places in the Republic of Botswana. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Included with the book is an original matted silver gelatin print of Muhammad Ali that is hand-numbered and signed in the lower margin by Neil Leifer. One of the world's greatest sports photographers, he has photographed 15 Olympic Games, 4 soccer World Cups, 15 Kentucky Derbies, countless World Series games, the first 10 Super Bowls and every important heavyweight title fight since Floyd Patterson beat Ingemar Johansson to regain the title in 1960. But Neil Leifer has also shot some of the most exceptional portraits of celebrities and sport stars ever, from presidents to Hollywood actors to Olympic champions. Leifer became a professional photographer while still in his teens. Using the skills he'd learned in the mid-50s on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, at the Henry Street Settlement's photo workshop, he quickly moved from being picture editor at his high-school paper to working as a freelancer for major national magazines, eventually working for nearly all of them, including The Saturday Evening Post, Look, Life, Newsweek, Time, and most often, Sports Illustrated. During various parts of his career, Leifer has been a staff photographer at Sports Illustrated and Time, and a contributing photographer at Life. He now devotes most of his time to producing and directing films. This is his 10th book and the first to be devoted to a wide range of his portraits." Measuring approximately 12.875 x 11.125 inches and containing 60 plates printed on heavy stock fine paper, the book is bound in black colored cloth covered boards.         SAM TAYLOR-WOOD: THE PASSION CYCLE

Vienna, Austria: BAWAG Foundation, 2003. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Vienna, Austria: BAWAG Foundation, 2003. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. Unpaginated. Exhibition catalog, presented as an Artist Book. One of the most beautiful erotic art photography books of our time. The first and only edition. Published in a tiny print run as a hardcover original only. There is no ISBN. The book is now rare. A brilliant production by Sam Taylor-Wood and FUEL: Oversize-volume format. Red cloth boards with black titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Sam Taylor-Wood. Afterword by Hripsime Visser. Japanese art-inspired decorative endpapers. Printed on thick uncoated stock paper in Vienna, Austria to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name held at the BAWAG Foundation Vienna from September 19 through November 30, 2003. Presents a suite of color photographs of a couple having sex. The images are presented as postcard-size "souvenirs". Arranged in a non-linear, anti-narrative order, Sam Taylor-Wood makes us view the images randomly rather than sequentially, in keeping with the "collecting" aspect of the project. Now, the one thing about sex, whether routine or extreme, is that it always happens in a narrative-like, beginning/middle/end sequence: Pre-coitus, coitus, post-coitus. And while every photograph is discrete, photography books make narrative possible, that is, a sequence that yields a storyline (as in the work of Robert Frank or Nan Goldin). Artist/photographer/film-maker Sam Taylor-Wood&#39;s approach in "The Passion Cycle" is about photography&#39;s fundamentally opposite possibility: The photograph as a sensory experience, as a performance, and as a cycle that comes full circle (rather than a story that has a beginning, middle, and end). After all, most people still look at photographs randomly, going from this image and that. "Inspired by shunga, which depict sexuality in a frank and unvarnished manner, the small format of the images refers to the voyeuristic relation that the collector has with shunga prints, comparable to that of the late 19th-century European collector of erotic photographs" (Hripsime Visser). The point of collecting is the same as looking at photographs: One does it in no particular order. Sam Taylor-Wood explores her fascination with sex further, this time for a huge global audience: She will direct the film adaptation of "Fifty Shades of Grey" (2014), for which she has hand-picked Jamie Dornan, an impeccable choice, in his breakthrough role as the eponymous hero. An absolute "must-have" title for Sam Taylor-Wood collectors. <b><i>This title is an erotic photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Exhibition Catalog/Artist Book available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare copy thus. </b></i> 25 color plates. One of the most brilliant living artist/photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER SAM TAYLOR-WOOD TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). .

        The Essential John Nash

Princeton: Princeton University Press, 2003. First edition of this volume that brings together Nash&#39;s most well-known papers. Octavo, original black cloth. Signed by John Nash on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. When John Nash was awarded the Nobel prize in economics in 1994, many people were surprised to learn that he was alive and well. Since then, Sylvia Nasar&#39;s celebrated biography A Beautiful Mind, has revealed the man. The Essential John Nash reveals his work--in his own words. This book presents, for the first time, the full range of Nash&#39;s diverse contributions not only to game theory, for which he received the Nobel, but to pure mathematics--from Riemannian geometry and partial differential equations--in which he commands even greater acclaim among academics. Included are nine of Nash&#39;s most influential papers, most of them written over the decade beginning in 1949. "Why are we so intrigued by the story of John Nash? We are curious to understand a person who proves theorems we are unable to fathom. We imagine the voices from another world he has heard. We ask where he was for 30 years during which he walked among us but wasn&#39;t here. We are frightened and we are attracted by this combination of &#39;crazy&#39; and &#39;genius&#39;, an invitation for visiting the edge of our own minds." (Ariel Rubinstein)

The paper over boards front panel has a geometric art deco design in dark gray, green and blue with ivory for an accent. From 1981 through 2001, Koontz used &#39;dark&#39; poetry quotes, from a supposed mysterious book of this name as epigraphs at the beginnings - and occasionally at part divisions - of many of his books. It snowballed on him and began to take over a large part of his and his assistants&#39; lives, due to all the requests from fans for information about or a copy of the book. In this now-realized book, Koontz starts with 8 tickle-your-funny-bone chapters of musings on the why&#39;s and wherefor&#39;s of how The Book Of Counted Sorrows came to be imagined, then published, and how the publication will hopefully make his life halfway sane again. Actually, the poems &#39;are&#39; quite good, though they are &#39;not&#39; funny, nor intended to be. ; 9-1/4" x 6-1/8"; 71 pages .

The Book Of Counted Sorrows Signed #d Limited Edition in slipcase, #141 of 1,250 copies

New York: Charnel House. F/NONE. 2003. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. 0927389177 . SIGNED and numbered by the author on the limitation page, this being copy #141 of 1,250 signed limited edition copies. Fine as new (unread) book in Fine as new black cloth (matches the cloth on the book) publisher-i ssued slipcase, with no faults or damage to either. Issued without dustjacket. The book has a black cloth spine with gilt printing, a plain matching black cloth back panel, and a black silk ribbon placemarker. Actually, the poems &#39;are&#39; quite good, though they are &#39;not&#39; funny, nor intended to be. ; 9-1/4" x 6-1/8"; 71 pages; Signed by Author .

        East Broadway Breakdown

Berlin: Holzwarth Publications, 2003. Fine in white wrappers, black dust jacket, card enclosure.. Deluxe Edition. Quarto in special box. Number 101 of 160 copies issued with an original black and white photograph, 4 X 6 inches, SIGNED, stamped, and dated. The book itself is neither signed nor numbered, but bears the publisher&#39;s "special edition" stamp, and is housed in a drop back cardboard box created for this edition, as issued. Each photograph in the deluxe edition corresponds to a different page in the book, so no copy is the same. Furthermore, the original photographic portfolio of East Broadway Breakdown was executed in an edition of only four copies, so these books likely provide the only opportunity to acquire an original Christopher Wool photograph. East Broadway Breakdown is Wool&#39;s mid-90s paean to the Lower East Side, and certainly ranks as one of the greatest New York photobooks of all-time, despite its relative obscurity. That Wool&#39;s photography has been almost completely overshadowed by his painting only adds to the the mystique of these relentlessly romantic images, hidden behind the bleak and grainy nightscape of a still rundown New York. No American photographer better exemplifies the greatness of the Japanese ideal than Christopher Wool; it has gone largely unnoticed that Wool is the natural heir to the Provoke school - the American Moriyama.
