        Five Poems

[Las Vegas]: [Rainmaker Editions]. [2002]. Proof sheets, consisting of two frameable leaves, from the limited edition of this collection of five poems by Morrison with illustrations by Kara Walker. Two leaves only: the first carries the third stanza of "Eve Remembering" and is blank on the verso; the second features Walker's art work, with the title page of "The Perfect Ease of Grain" on the verso. "Proof" in pencil in bottom margin. Slight corner crease to the leaf with text; else fine. A notable collaboration between two of the most highly regarded African-American women in their respective arts -- Morrison a Nobel Prize winner in Literature and Walker a visual artist using the silhouette as a form, who was the youngest recipient ever of a MacArthur grant when she received one in 1997 at the age of 28; she was selected by Time magazine in 2007 as one of the 100 most influential figures of our time The original silhouette for one of the images in this collaboration with Morrison sold at auction for over $30,000. The edition for which this is a proof sheet was limited to 425 copies; it seems safe to assume that far fewer proofs were done -- probably a tiny handful. . First Edition.

Vues de Venise. Mezzotints by Judith Rothchild

Verdigris Press Octon, France: Verdigris Press. 2002. One of 6 copies, from a total issue of 50, (8 with an original copper plate and additional mezzotint, 6 with an additional mezzotint, this copy, 36 regular copies) all on Hahnemuhle paper, this special copy with an additional mezzotint not in the regular edition, each signed and numbered by the artist, Judith Rothchild. Page size: 8 x 10 inches; 16pp. Bound: reversible accordion-fold (leporello), covers of hand-marbled Venetian papers in red, black and gold over boards; as issued in black slipcase with Venetian paper accents, title in letterpress in black on marbled paper insert, white label on cover boards a bit ink spotted, else fine. Text in original French. This book, which is completely reversible has on one side a text on Venice by George Sand and on the other by Emile Zola, each with three Rothchild mezzotints of doorways, bridges and canals. Sand's delightful description of Venice in springtime forms a sharp contrast to Zola's grim portrayal of a decadent city in decay. Like the illustrations themselves, the texts provide a provocative study of contrasts. An extraordinarily beautiful book redolent with the eternal allure of Venice. See an Image.

        Bilboquet. Translated by John Crombie

[Paris]: Kickshaws Press. 2002. One of 220 copies of the first English edition. Hand set and hand printed in Nicolas Cochin by John Crombie who has translated the text from the original French. The title page is in black with the title in red and blue; each page is decorated with a colored ball and string, blue and pink, followed by green and pink, followed by a dark and lighter pink, the letterpress over the colorful balls and sticks and woven string tethers that snake around each page. Page size: 6-7/8 inches x 5 inches; 20 leaves. Bound by Antonio Perez-Noriega: simplified structure of red morocco, with onlays in pink suede in shape of a ball on front panel, title and author stamped in blue on onlay with blue dot in center of circle, blind-stamped line attached to circle representing string (the two elements of the game, bilboquet), the English title, "Cup and Ball" stamped in blue along blind-tooled string line; rear panel with pink suede onlay floating up to top edge (string of game) affixed to "cup" of game represented with blue suede onlay surrounded by pink suede with red dot stamped in circle of blue suede, blue suede guards with onlay of tan suede circle (the ball), matching slipcase and sleeve of blue paper over boards with 1/4 red calf at spine and edges stamped in blue with auther and title separated by gold dot, original white wrappers printed in red and blue bound in, signed on inside front turn-in with blind stamp "antonio / p.n.," fine. & John Crombie tells the reader that this is a translation of a story about bilboquet, better known in the Anglo-Saxon world as &#39;cup-and-ball&#39;, which swept Europe in the sixteenth century, being played alike in royal courts and on the streets. The game&#39;s purpose is to toss the (usually wooden) ball- suitably holed, and tethered to the peg by a string - into the air and catch it either on the spike at one end or in the cup at the other. The word itself, which denotes both the game and the plaything, derives from the French "bille," a marble or ball, and "bouquer" to thrust or impale, as with the horn or a "bouc" (he-goat). Charles Cros (1842-1888), French poet, humorous writer, and inventor, performed many early experiments with color, developing an early color photo process. Surely he would have been pleased with this colorful interpretation of his short story. This is a lovely book perfectly capturing the simplicity and joy of the game.& John Crombie&#39;s Kickshaws Press usually is based in Paris and is known for publishing small, witty, and extremely elegant books. This title reinforces that reputation. <br>See an <A HREF= >Image.</A><br>

        PARIS + KLEIN

New York City, NY: Distributed Art Publishers (DAP) , 2002. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Distributed Art Publishers (DAP) , 2002. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 346 pages. Collection of photographs. One of the greatest photography books of our time. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. A brilliant production by William Klein: Oversize-volume format. Black hard boards with titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by William Klein. Afterword by Anthony Lane. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Paris, France to the very highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark exhibition in Paris in 2002. Presents William Klein&#39;s sixth and final "city" collection. The photographs by the expatriate American photographer, who is now in his 80&#39;s, represent a significant portion of a life lived in Paris. The first volume in his great Series, "Life Is Good And Good For You In New York", was also first published in Paris, and is now considered a classic. It was followed by "Rome", "Moscow", and "Tokyo" in quick succession, and upon his return to photography, "Torino &#39;90". "Paris + Klein" (the only one in which Klein added his name to the title) took much longer to produce and complete. William Klein said he wanted to do something different (but of course) and also somehow capture the city in all its rich diversity, that is, its often-overlooked earthy vitality as well as its exquisite beauty, William Klein&#39;s Paris (the city as paradox) rather than Eugene Atget&#39;s (the city as pathos). Although it would have been really odd if William Klein did not do a book on his adopted city, a collection of images on Paris has always been another challenge altogether, for him or any other photographer, because there is a whole shelf of great photography books on Paris. It is the most photographed city in the world, with images dating back to the inception of photography itself. The camera was invented there in 1839, and the French were the very first to accord photography the status of art, preceding London, New York, and Tokyo, the other great contemporary centers of photographic culture. Klein inaugurated a revolution in photography by breaking with the medium&#39;s taboos and traditions. He developed a radically new way to take pictures, perfecting his graphic design-based style by incorporating elements of black humor, social criticism, satire, reportage, cinema, literature, and poetry, thereby creating a unique look that has since been so widely copied by other artists, graphic designers, and photographers (without credit being given to its creator) it is now part of our collective photographic vocabulary. A "must-have" title for William Klein collectors. <b><i> This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in metallic-silver marker on the title page by William Klein. This title is now highly collectible. This is one of very few signed copies still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> 241 color, 91 duotone plates. "Paris + Klein" was selected by The New Yorker Magazine as The Best Photography Book of the Year 2002. William Klein&#39;s "Life Is Good And Good For You In New York: Trance Witness Revels" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER WILLIAM KLEIN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1891024698.
