Blocker, Mare
Center for Book Arts, 2001. Limited to an edition of 50 signed and numbered copies. Istoriato is an Italian narrative style of pottery decoration which uses the pottery body solely as support for a purely pictorial effect. Originating about 1500 in Faenza, Italy, paintings comparable in seriousness to Italian Renaissance easel paintings were applied to Maiolica ware. The subjects, biblical, historical, and mythological scenes, are executed with a realism (including the use of perspective) quite unlike any previous pottery decoration. Although violating aesthetic rules in their subordination of shape to decoration, such wares remain works of great skill, as well as beauty. During her Sally R. Bishop residency at the Center, Mare Blocker explored how the design of this pottery changed with the invention of the printing press. Multiple color linoeleum blocks and type were printed on Magnani Pescia. Produced at the Center for Book Arts, each boxed set also includes a unique plate decorated in the style of Maiolica pottery.

Berger, Sidney E.
Bird & Bull Press, 2001. Edition limited 170 copies, this the bookbinder Greg Campbell's copy, Campbell-Logan Bindery, and out-of-series; pp. 197, [7]; illustrations, facsimiles, photos, and samples tipped in; original quarter morocco, leather spine label, Japanese cloth over boards, cover stamped in gilt; prospectus laid in. In a cloth covered clamshell box with leather spine label. Fine. The gilt Japanese titling on the upper cover has been stamped upside down. Sid Berger called us a day or two after we'd catalogued this book and gave us the story. The entire edition was bound with the Japanese text on the cover upside down. When Morris received the book he was, shall we say, disturbed, and sent the entire edition back to Campbell-Logan where the book was stripped of its cloth cover and the error corrected. Berger tells me that only 3 of the edition still have the original binding with the upside down text: his, Henry Morris's, and this copy from the chastened binder. The first 4-volume set of Tindale's Handmade Papers of Japan is one of the finest books on Japanese papermaking published. This edition expands the text and includes a number of full page illustrations, color photographs, and 7 paper samples tipped in. Forty-Four A66.

Neil Shaver began his Yellow Barn Press in Council Bluffs, Iowa in the 1960s, but it wasn't until 1979, after having studied printing with Harry Duncan, that the press produced its first book. Throughout the eighties and nineties, the press continued to publish titles noted for their quality of design and high craftsmanship in production, in particular, books of poetry and books about book or books about printing such as the successful Elbert Hubbard: William Morris's Greatest Imitator, American Iron Hand Presses, and John DePol: A Celebration. Included are a history and comments by Neil Shaver. Original prospectus laid in. [Attributes: First Edition]

Stoppard, Tom; Ketcham, Diana (Introduction); Matthews, William
The Arion Press, 2001. Matthews, William. Limited Edition. Hardcover. No. 268 of 426 copies, oblong quarto size, 131 pp., signed by Tom Stoppard and William Matthews. Fine. Sir Tom Stoppard (born Tomas Straussler, 1937), playwright and screenwriter, has received an Academy Award (for Shakespeare in Love) and four Tony Awards. This play, first performed in London in 1993, "interweaves elements of the murder mystery with bedroom farce"; it "begins in 1809 in the schoolroom of Sidley Park, the seat of the Coverly family, where Lord and Lady Croom are entertaining a set of poets and intellectuals that includes the historical figure Lord Byron. Episodes alternate in Sidley Park between 1809-1812 and the present, nearly two centuries later, among the Croom descendants". William Matthews (b. 1949) is among the foremost American artists in watercolour; his illustrations for this work show the reader the larger setting for the play, exterior to the stage set. They are inserted two at the front and two at the back of the book, with the unusual and imaginative design allowing the book to be displayed with all four illustrations on view at once and pages from the dialogue open as well. ___DESCRIPTION: Full green ribbed silk, paper labels on the front and spine with green lettering, watercolour illustrations bound in at front and rear as referred to above, title page in green and black; oblong quarto size (11" by 14"), pagination: [i] ii-xvi [1] 2-114 [1 colophon], one of 426 copies, this number 268, signed by Tom Stoppard and William Matthews on the colophon.
