Drawings from the Drawer: Digressions and distances, experiments and follies. Eight Drawings, sold individually

Colfax, WA. 2001. Each drawing, 13 x 10 inches, on Arches paper. There are 8 separate drawings, each with its own cryptic message of cartographic, mathematic and celestial symbols and the artist's invented script. Drawn with ink, graphite and watercolor with some foil stamping; these drawings capture the skyline of dreams; the twilight of imagination. & The artist explains: "As my books progress, there is a certain amount of research and play that goes on. There is a delicate set of balances that make up each book and often the success of the finished product is owed to the early workup drawings. There are also some drawings that are done in tandem with the book as amplification of ideas or departures that might simply fit with the design or trajectory of the ideography. Here are my "drawings from the drawer" that contain these mixed messages.& Often the paper is treated with a size solution or primed with a colorant to mimic the earlier paper preparations. The drawing and painting materials are standard and traditional but occasionally there will be departures into more contemporary pigments and mordants."& For book artist Timothy C. Ely, what is revealed is as important as what is concealed. Using a variety of traditional methods for his books and prints, Ely's narratives are often written in an imaginary language. His books are owned by the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution, the Museum of Modern Art, Harvard University, the University of Iowa, Columbia University and others.& & Ely 1& Like a chart of new worlds, imaginary places, with its colorful details in hues of purple, blue, rose and orange, this drawing provides an entrée in to the unknown-a glimpse of creation? Notations in Ely's invented script.& & Ely 2& Caught in motion, what secrets does this polygon keep? Rose wash with details in black, red and yellow. Notations in Ely's invented script.& & & Ely 3& What mysteries lie in this polygon of cloudy gray? Gray-rose wash with details in blue. Notations in Ely's invented script.& & & Ely 4& Diagrams seem to chart the energy of this polygon. Gray-rose wash with details in yellow, red, black and rose. Notations in Ely's invented script.& & & Ely 5& Will the scrap of Ely's invented script in this drawing serve as a Rosetta stone? Shades of gray with highlights in red green and yellow.& & & Ely 6& The book, protected by spheres, perhaps it contains the cipher to Ely's invented script. Shades of gray and rose, with yellow, green, blue and red highlights; some foil stamping.& & & Ely 7& Celestial projections from another dimension, this drawing seems to chart the constellations of another universe. A striking rainbow ribbon and metallic ink dramatize the picture. In shades of gray with details in red, green, yellow and purple; foil stamping and metallic ink.& & & Ely 8& What are the stories found within these constellations? Subtle shades of gray with blue highlights and Ely's invented script in white, red and blue; foil stamping.
See an Image.
The Tempest

Canton, NY: Caliban Press, 2001. 95 of 125 copies. The Tempest is generally thought to be Shakespeare's last play and is now considered one of his greatest. This beautiful edition was designed, printed, and bound by Mark McMurray at his Caliban Press, which was established by him in 1985. An announcement for the book states that this edition was inspired by a variety of sources, including the First Folio, the Bread & Puppet Theater of Vermont, John Coltrane's Ole, the film Black Orpheus, and Prospero's library. The text is taken chiefly from the First Folio edition of Shakespeare's works published in 1623. Except for the eight songs, the spelling has been modernized. The book is bound in handmade lavender paper covers with a purple morocco spine. A circle has been cut into the front cover and the title is printed underneath on light green paper. The book is printed using seven handmade and mould made papers from several different makers of handmade paper. The type is 14 point Dante, a type that was designed by Giovanni Marderstaag and first released in 1954. There are striking images found within this edition taken from a variety of found and historical sources including relief prints, collage, pochoir, and a volvelle. There is also a linocut by wood engraver Greg Lago. The book is housed in a handmade blue paper portfolio. The spine has a white title label, and the front cover has an image also used in the text. 119 pages. PRI/121010.

        Rembrandt's Self

Vincent FitzGerald & Co. New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Co.. [ND but 2001]. Portfolio of five etchings by Susan Weil, signed by Weil on the colophon in pencil and initialed by her with the print number in pencil on each print. Printed on Japanese Gampi paper, chine colle, on Hahnemuhle Copper paper by Peter Pettengill at Wingate Studio. The etchings are taken from re-strikes of the Rembrandt Self-Portrait etchings purchased by Susan Weil while studying art in Paris at the Academie Julien in the 1940's. For this suite, she has cut up the etchings and collaged them to achieve the images herein. The images were made from photogravue plates made by Jon Goodman. Ms. Weil has been experimenting with the use of images made from blueprint paper since 1951 when she and her (then) husband, Robert Rauschenberg, were working at Black Mountain College. Her use of collage has dated from this time as well. She has, obviously, has made these mediums her own. See an Image.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. 'Hero' envelope Hogwart's Acceptance Letter

USA, Warner Bros. 2001., 2001. A fine production-used original prop created for the 2001 Warner Brothers film. These envelopes were used in the memorable scene when Harry receives dozens of invitations through owl-post. This is one of the fully finished envelopes containing the actual Hogwarts invitation, addressed to Harry Potter and secured with a real wax seal. The majority of these envelopes bore printed seals in order to be be light enough to fly around the room, an effect created via off-screen blowing equipment. The present version is far less common and was created for close-up filming purposes- these originals are known in to movie prop world as 'hero' envelopes, not to be confused with the more commonly found simpler versions which were machine-cut to resemble a letter but cannot be opened. If held to the light, 'hero' envelopes clearly display the folded mail inside. Sold with a teaser poster/window card, which illustrates a Hogwarts envelope. Ex-PropMasters, Kent, England.

Center for Book Arts (New York: Center for Book Arts. 2001). 11" x 11", Round shaped, case bound concertina, with printed navy Iris cloth on both the book covers and lidded clamshell box. n.p.. Limited to an edition of 50 signed and numbered copies. Istoriato is an Italian narrative style of pottery decoration which uses the pottery body solely as support for a purely pictorial effect. Originating about 1500 in Faenza, Italy, paintings comparable in seriousness to Italian Renaissance easel paintings were applied to Maiolica ware. The subjects, biblical, historical, and mythological scenes, are executed with a realism (including the use of perspective) quite unlike any previous pottery decoration. Although violating aesthetic rules in their subordination of shape to decoration, such wares remain works of great skill, as well as beauty. During her Sally R. Bishop residency at the Center, Mare Blocker explored how the design of this pottery changed with the invention of the printing press. Multiple color linoeleum blocks and type were printed on Magnani Pescia. Produced at the Center for Book Arts, each boxed set also includes a unique plate decorated in the style of Maiolica pottery. .

Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 128 pages. Collection of photographs. One of the most important art photography books of our time. Limited Slipcased Edition of 50 copies, each of which comes with a numbered, titled, and signed original silver-gelatin print. Superior to and should not be confused with the regular hardcover trade edition, which was published simultaneously with it. They have the same ISBN. A brilliant production by Ken Schles: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with black titles embossed on the spine, as issued. Photographs and Manifesto/Essay by Ken Schles. The title comes from the lyrics of Bob Dylan's "Tombstone Blues". Text fragments by Franz Kafka, Ralph Ellison, Walter Lippmann, and Italo Calvino. 8 X 10 inch silver-gelatin print matted, framed, and laid into its own black cloth folder. Matching black cloth slipcase. Printed on thick glossy stock paper in Germany to the very highest standards. Presents, after a long hiatus, Ken Schles' ambitious second collection. There is something disturbing and uncompromising about each image, by itself and in the context of the collection's sheer relentlessness. Schles' point is that we should not be distracted but be completely immersed. He also has a didactic purpose, which he articulates in his essay, "must-reading" for anyone uncritically enamored of photography (this includes many serious photographers and critics). While his essay is critical about photography, Schles is not against photography. Indeed, the latter stance would be self-defeating because even the most tendentiously biting "anti-photographic" art photograph can be coopted by the system to reinforce unjust social structures and feed an insatiable and corrupt mass culture. Instead, he is for a photography that somehow retains its subversive power and strengthens people given the fact that "we are formed by a flawed society. Yet, however boldly or tenuously we engage our lives, we love, we hate, we struggle" (Ken Schles). A "must-have" title for Ken Schles and art photography collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Slipcased Edition, indicated as such on the Back Copyright Page. It comes with an 8 X 10 inch original silver-gelatin print that is very prominently and beautifully numbered, titled, and signed in pencil on verso by the photographer: "Ken Schles The End of the World From The Geometry of Innocence 43/50". This edition is now highly collectible. This is one of only two copies still available online and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. The other copy apparently has a major publisher's creasing flaw that is not present in this copy. A very rare signed copy thus. 106 color, 87 duotone plates, 1 original print. One of the most brilliant living photographers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER KEN SCHLES TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3775710116.

Electra by Ruben R. Lapolla, the edition was supervised by Samuel Cesar Palui and Ernesto Lowenstein. These two companion volumes are extremely beautiful and evocative of the creation and deliverance stories. These books were featured in an exhibition at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design - "Sacred Text / Contemporary Form: Spiritual Traditions in the Digital Age."& Ediciones Dos Amigos, probably the finest letterpress publisher working in Latin America today, comes out of the long tradition of the English private press movement and the French Livre d'Artiste. Combining original prints from contemporary Argentinian artists with texts from the Holy Bible enables the publishers to, as Decherd Turner wrote in an essay on this press, "project an explosive vitality. The text and art have such energy that one would never think "imperial" or "democrat" for "Dos Amigos" books have far too much power ever to be encompassed by such terms. Boundaries fall away, the books reach out to evoke the whole range of human emotions."
See an Image.
EMH Arts Eagle Gallery [London, England]: EMH Arts [Eagle Gallery]. 2001. One of 15 copies all on Velin Arches paper, each signed by the artist, Julia Farrer. Page size: 23-7/16 inches x 4-13/16 inches; 14 leaves printed and cut out. Bound: hand-sewn leporello style in original drab boards, housed in white linen sleeve and slipcase, all by Charles Gledhill, fine. Illustrated with original intaglio prints (hand-colored drypoints) by Julia Farrer, who also editioned the prints. The book has an architectural, pierced structure where a folded geometric image reflects and counterpoints a single poem. The text is printed letter press by Phil Abel at Hand & Eye Letterpress. Judith Thurman and Julia Farrer have collaborated to produce this homage to the memory of their friend, Kate Griffin. A visually stunning production from this collaboration of author and artist. Judith Thurman is the author of well- received biographies of Colette (SECRETS OF THE FLESH) and Isak Dinesen, as well as contributions to "The New Yorker" magazine. Julia Farrer, born in London in 1950, attended The Slade School from 1968-1972 and was a Harkness Fellow at the University of New Mexico and New York from 1974- 1976. Her work is held in many important collections, including the Arts Council of Great Britain, the Ashmoleon Museum of Oxford University, the Yale Center for British Art, the Tate Gallery, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her recent work explores transformations of geometric compositions from two into three dimensions, across the different media of painting, monoprinting, unique and small run artist’s books.
