DAVE MARTIN: AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHY OF THE MALE NUDE, 1940-1970, VOLUME 3 (WITH "JIM WARREN 1953" ORIGINAL PRINT)

Berlin, Germany: Janssen Publishers, 2001. First Edition. First Printing.. Softcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Berlin, Germany: Janssen Publishers, 2001. Softcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 150 pages. Rare Dave Martin collectible set. A copy of "Dave Martin: American Photography of the Male Nude, 1940-1970" with signed original silver-gelatin print of "Jim Warren 1953". The book is the third volume in the now-legendary Janssen Publishers Series. An elegant production by Janssen: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial softcovers with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Dave Martin. He has contributed a literate and concise essay, "A Brief History of The Male Nude In The USA", which appears as an Afterword in this book only. Printed on pristine-white archival stock paper in Berlin, Germany to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents an overview of the pioneering work of Dave Martin, who was active for three decades, between the 1950's and 1970's. By common consensus, his best work was done during his first decade, when he set up shop in San Francisco and somehow persuaded the athletes at nearby Stanford University to pose au naturel for him. Today, Stanford owns the single largest collection of Dave Martin's work (about 2600 prints in all) , a proud and important part of its Permanent Photography Collection. The All-American look that remains pervasive to this day (and enjoys universal status as the emblem of male beauty and desirability) is due in large part to the efforts of pioneers like Lon of New York. Deeply influenced by the latter, Dave Martin sought to capture this look from the more casual, relaxed, and informal West Coast perspective, a brilliant counterpoint to Lon's Classically-inspired nudes, which capture the cosmopolitan East Coast and its Old World, European elegance. That he would have the cream of the crop, Stanford University athletes, as his models remains one of the major coups in the history of male nude photography. "Jim Warren 1953": Original silver-gelatin print by Dave Martin, who produced his own prints, a practice that most contemporary photographers now largely consign to highly specialized print developers. The print measures 10 X 8 inches and shows what is probably Dave Martin's single most handsome discovery, the Stanford athlete Jim Warren, in one of his most beautiful poses. The print is encased in its own protective plastic sheet. Jim Warren appears in Martin's book and is one of Dave Martin's most avidly collected subject/models. He anticipates by more than thirty years the All-American supermodels of Bruce Weber, Herb Ritts, and Greg Gorman. This is the genuine article, a collectible, not just memorabilia, set for Dave Martin and male nude photography collectors. This copy of "Dave Martin: American Photography of The Male Nude" comes with an original silver-gelatin print of "Jim Warren 1953", which is very prominently and beautifully titled and signed in pencil on verso by Dave Martin. Jim Warren is his real name, and he was an athlete at Stanford University. His portrait is one of the most stunningly beautiful male nudes we have ever seen. This is the only such set available online and has no flaws, pristine beauties. A rare signed set thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white plates, 1 original print. One of the finest American photographers of the male nude of the 20th century. A flawless collectible set. (SEE ALSO LON OF NEW YORK TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3925443673.

LOUISE BOURGEOIS: THE INSOMNIA DRAWINGS - COMPLETE IN TWO VOLUMES (SPECIAL EDITION)

(BOURGEOIS, LOUISE). Bourgeois, Louise, Marie-Laure Bernadac & Elisabeth Bronfen. LOUISE BOURGEOIS: THE INSOMNIA DRAWINGS - COMPLETE IN TWO VOLUMES (SPECIAL EDITION). Zurich, SWITZERLAND & New York: DAROS, Peter Blum Edition & Scalo, 2001. First Edition 1/1500 Deluxe. 4to. Linen Over Boards, Slipcased. Artist Monographs. Fine/No Jackets - As Issued.. 438 + 132pp, 445 color illustrations. Text in English and French. "Insomnia has been a lifetime companion of Louise Bourgeois' night hours. Between November 1994 and June 1995, she committed to paper whatever thoughts, memories, and images surfaced during her long sleepless nights. The resulting two hundred and twenty drawings are the quintessence of all the impulses, sources, and motifs that inspire her work. The Insomnia Drawings show the artist's mind at work: drawings and sketches alternate with poems and aphorisms in both French and English, interspersed with notes referring to the business of everyday life. The series is a unique mirror of an extraordinary woman's life and work: beautiful, disquieting, passionate, inquiring, and imbued with a quirky sense of humor. The first volume contains facsimiles of both the recto and verso of the drawings. The second volume provides the reader with valuable background information on this complex and exhilaratingly beautiful work of art". A most handsome copy (#529/1500) of this massive set still in the publisher's shrinkwrap of the elegantly produced special edition bound in debossed, silkscreened Japanese linen over boards limited to one thousand, five hundred numbered copies showing some tiny creases to a few corners of its printed cardboard slipcase. The Cosmic * Sidereal * Galactic Abecedarium of the Universe & Other Tangential Star Ephemera

San Diego: False Bay Editions, 2001. Stiff Boards. Fine. Stiff Boards. Copy C of 26 lettered copies. This gorgeous alphabet book captures the wonder and joy of the cosmos through words, pictures, and various imaginative and inventive visual constructions throughout the book. There are windows, foldouts, items that pull out, cutouts, a flexagon, and many others. In their colophon, the authors say: "This ABC book of the universe was created from March to November, 2011. During this period Jim's mother Agnes died and took her place among the stars. Sibyl's husband Al had successful open-heart surgery, and then the September 11th tragedy occurred. Throughout it all the stars remained our constant as we created visuals with photopolymer plates, wood type, monoprinting, digital imaging, and a zinc intaglio plate for the cover." These visuals illustrate and adorn each letter, for which five words are given relating to the universe. Some of the text describes the discoveries by such figures as Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler. There are also quotes from luminaries such as Shakespeare, Walt Whitman, Oscar Wilde, Eudora Welty, and Lord Byron. The text was printed on a Vandercook Universal I letterpress using Venus and Clarendon types on Somerset Book, Fabriano Rosapina Bianco, and Rives BFK papers. Bound in heavy black and white paper stock with astral designs. The rear flap slides into a red paper square on cover to close. About 8 x 8 inches. A magical book in fine condition. KARIN APOLLONIA MULLER: ANGELS IN FALL

Hamburg, Germany: Kruse Verlag, 2001. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Hamburg, Germany: Kruse Verlag, 2001. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 112 pages. The photographer's breakthrough debut collection. One of the greatest photography books of our time. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with the Reissued Edition. The latter has a different ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Karin Apollonia Muller: Oversize-volume format in wide oblong shape. Glossy pictorial hard boards with green titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Karin Apollonia Muller. Text by Rodney Sappington. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Hamburg, Germany to absolutely the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents one of the most powerful photographic debuts of our time, a sequence of images of Los Angeles by an artist who is an outsider and therefore acutely sees what insiders (which every Angeleno is, one way or another) are too close for comfort to see: "A world where the synthetic and the global have overtaken the natural and the local, where the landscape has become a mercurial web of living dreams. Her images are both immediately real and eerily distant depictions of the vertiginous changes unraveling our everyday lives. She captures an era in which economic change is written on the streets, on human bodies, and on every form of the environment. A moving visual document of the world's most bewildering and most beguiling city" (Rodney Sappington). Born in 1963 in Heidelberg, Karin Apollonia Muller studied at the Folkwang School Essen. She has worked, taught, and travelled in her native Germany, Italy, and China. She works in color, deploying a pure, understated, and nuanced palette that is the antithesis of Andreas Gursky's saturated (and equally compelling) colors. It works beautifully for Los Angeles, whose blur and haze, the "smog" we identify with the city, are captured beautifully without rendering the work topical. Environmentalists claim her as one of them, but whatever her personal opinion may be about the environment, Muller is an artist, not an activist. Her work is in the Permanent Collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the George Eastman House, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum, among others. European (and of course, American) artists are endlessly fascinated by Los Angeles in a way that they are not by much-more-picturesque San Francisco. The great Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni once commented that San Francisco was "charming", that is to say, not his kind of city, but found Los Angeles "mesmerizing", making it the setting of his apocalyptic "Zabriskie Point", one of the greatest films of the 20th century. Karin Apollonia Muller is his kindred spirit, and her book is nothing less than a masterpiece. A "must-have" title for Karin Apollonia Muller collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Karin Apollonia Muller. This is an Import title and is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only signed copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 44 color plates. Karin Apollonia Muller's "Angels In Fall" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the most brilliant living photographers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER KARIN APOLLONIA MULLER TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3934923097.

San Francisco, CA: Fraenkel Gallery/Distributed Art Publishers, 2001. Hardcover. Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 96 pages. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of Lee Friedlander's finest achievements. Limited Edition of 2000 copies. The edition sold out shortly after publication and is now rare. A brilliant production by Lee Friedlander and Catherine Mills: Oversize-volume format. Glossy pictorial hard boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Lee Friedlander. Introductory Essay by the late great Walker Evans. The piece was written by Evans in 1963 after he saw the photographs, and appears in published form for the very first time. Separations by Thomas Palmer. Printed in duotone on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by Meridian Printing Company in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in a Limited Edition format, Lee Friedlander's "The Little Screens". "A revered and influential body of early work by Lee Friedlander, it has never before been brought together in its entirety. The book's title refers to the television screens housed in motel rooms and other nondescript rooms of anonymous character spread throughout the country during the 1960's. Each screen vividly transmits images of popular culture icons, political figures, and celebrities of the time. The environments are iconographic ghost-rooms filled with bland furniture-rooms, rooms that could be, and are, anywhere and everywhere. Weaves a narrative of a peripatetic photographer moving through the landscape of 1960's America, and the melancholy, yet sometimes comic, quality of life lived on the road. Provides a look at the 1960's, as so many people saw it: Beamed into their televisions and flickering across their living rooms" (Publisher's blurb). Friedlander's evocations of harmless, small-town banality and creeping menace at the same time prefigure the work of the film director David Lynch, notably "Blue Velvet" (1986), as well as Nan Goldin's eerie images of empty motel rooms. An absolute "must-have" title for Lee Friedlander collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the front free endpaper by Lee Friedlander. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Although it is a Limited Edition, Friedlander did not sign most copies of the book. This title is a modern photography classic. This is one of very few signed copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Copies available online command as much as $1200. A rare signed copy thus. 34 duotone plates. Lee Friedlander's "The American Monument" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in both "The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of The Twentieth Century" and "The Photobook". One of the greatest living photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER LEE FRIEDLANDER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1881337111.

        Tracht

New York: Lehmann Maupin, 2001. First Edition. Hardcover.. Fine/Fine. 4to. 64pp. Cream cloth in card slipcase. 76 colour plates with 2 gatefolds. First and only edition of 500 signed and numbered copies. More images available on request. Wonderful book in perfect condition. From Lehmann Maupin: "The only photographer ever given exclusive access to all the contestants of a Miss World¨ event, Teller spent eight hours in one evening taking brutally intimate head shots of all 88 contestants. Shot away from the stage and removed from the spotlights, the contestants--with caked on makeup, unwavering smiles, and bright eyes--start to appear interchangeable, like a carnival of culturally diverse Barbie dolls requiring lapel pins to indicate country of origin. Tracht is German for "costume," as in folkloric dress. Tracht is Teller's take on the dressing, the commodification beauty takes when pushed, much like the rest of fashion, to the extreme. The end effect of the ruthlessly efficient globalization of image manufacturing makes appearance artificial and style generic; what is left, then, but to extract its mesmerizing effect in the form of a sumptuously attractive artist's book, where one can truly revel in the mysteries of a world where Miss Israel looks more Californian than Miss USA, who in turn looks more Mittel European than Miss Estonia, who looks more Gaelic than Miss Ireland, who looks more Moorish thanÉ.Yet throughout, one cannot avoid noticing a certainÉsameness to these visages. Tracht deftly captures the costume of institutional modern beauty, and it is a thing to behold. Smartly sequenced by the acclaimed British design team Miles Murray Sorrell (FUEL), Tracht will leave you awash in beauty-world hyperbole. A perfect 10." THE STANLEY KUBRICK ARCHIVES - THE FIRST EDITION WITH INTERVIEW CD + "2001" FILMSTRIP

(KUBRICK, STANLEY). Castle, Alison, Jan Harlan & Christiane Kubrick. Alison Castle, Editor. THE STANLEY KUBRICK ARCHIVES - THE FIRST EDITION WITH INTERVIEW CD + "2001" FILMSTRIP. Koln, GERMANY: Benedikt Taschen Verlag, 2005. First Edition. Oblong Folio. Debossed Boards. Film Monograph. Fine./No Jacket - As Issued. 544pp, profusely illustrated in b&w and color. With an Audio CD. "The making of this book has been something of an odyssey: two years of traveling through time and space to the heart of Stanley Kubrick's universe, where I not only had the unprecedented privilege of having access to his archives, but also the invaluable guidance of those who were closest to him. Endeavoring to uncover each and every artifact that could cast light upon Kubrick's creative process, I scoured the archives, gathering the most illuminating items, from bits of paper covered with hurriedly scribbled notes to photographs taken by Kubrick on the sets of his films. Hunched over hundreds upon hundreds of contact sheets with my loupe, I was able to select images that had never been printed before, let alone seen; rifling through screenplay drafts I found references to scenes that were never filmed, and among the photos I found images of sequences that were abandoned; reading Kubrick's notes and letters, I discovered not only clues to his thought processes but also his curious love affair with various types of stationery, typewriters, and pens. Searching through the often chaotic mountains of material was an exhilarating experience: each and every "discovery" was like a minor miracle, a defining moment, an epiphany. Part two of this book features the result of this gleaning: an eclectic collection of material that represents the nuts and bolts of Kubrick's creative history. To help guide readers through the expedition is a selection of articles and essays by noted Kubrick scholars as well as a generous selection of material "from the horse's mouth" (i.e. Kubrick letters, essays, and interviews), refuting the popular misconception that Kubrick was a recluse who didn't or wouldn't talk about his work". This is Taschen's lavishly illustrated history of Kubrick's oeuvre from "Fear and Desire" through "Eyes Wide Shut" - the most comprehensive survey of the late, great director's work to date. A most handsome copy of the lavish, oversized 2005 first printing complete with audio CD and twelve frame filmstrip snipped from Kubrick's own 70mm print of "2001: A Space Odyssey" (that appears only in this edition) in the publisher's printed shipping carton, as issued. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its size and weight - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. 3-8228-2284-1 Inventory Number: 021956&

RICHARD AVEDON: MADE IN FRANCE - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER

(AVEDON, RICHARD). Thurman, Judith.. RICHARD AVEDON: MADE IN FRANCE - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER. Signed by the Photographer. San Francisco: Fraenkel Gallery , 2001. First Edition 1/5000. Folio. Pictorial Boards. Photography Monograph. Very Good/No Jacket - As Issued. 56pp, 40 quadratone illustrations. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. This strikingly beautiful monograph stands as an important rediscovery of a small but elegant body of work in the career of one of the world's best-known photographers. The Richard Avedon images presented here, many for the first time, were made in Paris for "Harper's Bazaar" during the 1950s. What is particularly notable about this presentation is that the images have been reproduced to the exact scale of the engraver's prints made for Avedon by the master printer Andre Gremola, and are uncropped, on their original mounts (with all of the artist's notations on both front and back). They provide a remarkable portrait of the working methods of one of the most influential fashion photographers in history. This oversized book, measuring 12 x 15", has been printed without compromise using quadratone plates throughout. Produced in a very small print run, this sold out only a few months following its publication, and has become highly sought after. An internally most handsome copy (cited on page 221 of "From Fair to Fine: 20th Century Photography Books That Matter" and page 122 of "From Fair to Fine 3") BOLDLY SIGNED "Avedon ." in black marker on the rear colophon showing some light overall wear along with a few scrapes to the rear cover.
