Stellar's Sea Cow Hydrodamalis gigas. Original artwork from A Gap in Nature.

2000 -2001. - Acrylic on canvas, 5 panels, 2000 x 8750mm, framed, signed and dated by artist. Last Record: 1768. Distribution: Prehistorically, around the Rim of the North Pacific, from Japan to at least Monterey Bay, California; Historically, Bering and Copper Islands, Commander Group, Western Bering Sea. With the exception of the great whales, Steller's sea cow was the biggest mammal to survive to modern times. The largest specimens, probably females, could reach over eight metres in length and weigh ten tonnes. Before about 13,000 years ago it was a common and widespread species throughout the coastal regions of the North Pacific. Hunting by Indians and other indigenous people, however, exterminated it and other ice-age giants such as mammoth from the mainland coasts. By two thousand years ago it survived only around the uninhabited Commander Islands in the Bering Sea. A relative of the dugong, it had a thick, bark-like and uneven skin. Its forelimbs were reduced, having no hand bones. They were curiously bent and were covered on the inside with bristles. Its body was itself an island to smaller creatures such as the barnacles that crusted its sides, while certain fish and seabirds used it as a convenient resting place. Some of its inhabitants, including several species of crustaceans that burrowed deep into its skin, forcing it to ooze a thin serum, were found nowhere else. All that we know of Steller's sea cow as a living animal comes from the writings of Georg Steller, the naturalist on the Bering Expedition. The expedition had been sent from St Petersburg to explore the far east, but was shipwrecked on the then unknown Commander Islands in 1741. When the shipwrecked expeditioners discovered the great creatures they were quite numerous in the shallow bays and inlets. Steller wrote that: these animals live in herds together in the sea, males and females usually going with one another, pushing the offspring before them all around the shore. These animals are busy with nothing but their food. The back and half the belly are constantly seen outside the water, and they munch along just like land animals with a slow, steady movement forward. With their feet they scrape the seaweed from the rocks, and they masticate incessantly. When the tide recedes, they go from the shore .but with the rising tide they go back again to the beach, often so close that we could reach and hit them with poles. They are not in the least afraid of human beings .they have an extraordinary love for one another, which extends so far that when one of them was cut into, all the others were intent on rescuing it and keeping it from being pulled ashore by closing a circle around it. Others tried to overturn the yawl. Some placed themselves on the rope or tried to draw the harpoon out of its body, in which indeed they were successful several times. We also observed that a male two days in a row came to its dead female on the shore and inquired about its condition .They play the Venus game in June .The female flees-slowly-ahead of the male with constant detours .But when [she] tires of this mock fight and the vain enticements, she lies on her back, and the male completes intercourse in the human way. Winter was evidently a tough time for these giants. Steller observed that they become so emaciated that not only the ridge of their backbone but every rib showed. The total population on the Commander Islands probably did not exceed one or two thousand individ-uals. They were hunted for food, oil and skins, and were extinct within twenty-seven years of their discovery. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Robert E. Howard & Weird Tales # 1: Howard in the Eyrie - The Conan Years / 2 Alternate Booklet Proofs

Memphis, TN: Dennis McHaney, 2001 Memphis, TN: Dennis McHaney, 2001. Two alternate booklet proofs, the latter of which, after the editing shown within it, became the boooklet Howard in the Eyrie - The Conan Years [Part I of Robert E. Howard and Weird Tales]. 12mo, 20 pp. & 16 pp. including covers. Fine, except for red ink editing marks. Robert E. Howard and Weird Tales # 1 was a booklet done for The Robert E. Howard United Press Association in 1991. It was the first of four booklets done for the Howard amateur press association which formed some of the basis for the book Robert E. Howard: World's Greatest Pulpster . Even though these booklets were only done for a very small audience, the publisher always printed out a proof copy on which corrections and notes were made in red pen. These were not "proof editions" of multiple copies, but were single copies for one person to proofread. Usually, very few actual layout changes were made after these proofs were done, and there was generally only one proof. For this publication, though, after the first proof was done, the basic format changed, interior color was dropped, and a plan to include all of Howard's Weird Tales poetry and make this a six issue series was abandoned and it was decided to limit it to four issues. A second proof was produced, further changes were made to the copy (scribbled in red ink] and that was what was used for the finished version. Both of those proof copies are in this listing. They are unique, one-of-a-kind items. There were very few changes made to the second version other than the corrections notated in red ink, but the first layout is drastically different. Available scans allow a comparison of a couple of pages of those layouts; in the scans, the first version is on top, the final version on the bottom. The first version of the layout no longer exists - the changes that comprised the second version were done to those original computer files, so this really is a one-of-a-kind Howard item. The second proof version is only 16 pages. The first proof is 20 pages and has something else not in the finished version - there are seven of Howard's Weird Tales poems included as well. They are: "Dead Man's Hate," "The Harp of Alfred," "Easter Island," "The Gates of Nineveh," "The Riders of Babylon," "Moon Mockery," and "The Moor Ghost." Both proofs are in excellent condition, but they have been lightly handled, and editorial notes and corrections are made throughout both in red ink. The first proof version has interior pages printed on 20 lb. white stock, and there is a little bit of printer bleed-through on some of the color images (visible in scans). The second version is printed on the same, heavier stock used on the finished product. James Van Hise called this series of booklets "instant collector's items." That may certainly be the case with the first proof version, with the inclusion of those Howard poems. When the material for these booklets later appeared in book form, it won the prestigious Cimmerian Award. Unique as a Howard & Weird Tales collectible duo. L103

The book\'s title refers to the television screens housed in motel rooms and other nondescript rooms of anonymous character spread throughout the country during the 1960s. Each screen vividly transmits images of popular culture icons, political figures, or minor celebrities of the times. The environments are iconographic ghost-filled rooms filled with bland furniture -- rooms without personality, rooms that could be, and are, anywhere and everywhere. The Little Screens and their environments weave a narrative of a peripatetic photographer moving through the landscape of 1960s America, and the melancholy, yet sometimes comic quality of life lived on the road. They provide a look at the 1960s as so many people saw it: beamed into their living rooms. The book\'s preface was written by the legendary Walker Evans after he saw the photographs in 1963.\" Containing 34 duotone photographs and measuring 10 x 10 inches, the book is bound in photographically illustrated laminated paper covered boards with a crystallogranpic dual-image tipped into the television screen portion of the cover photograph. The book (no dust jacket as issued) is housed in a green Plexiglass slipcase. The book has been boldly signed and numbered (82 of 100) by Lee Friedlander opposite the first page. The book is in FINE condition with just a hint of wear from the book sliding in and out of the slipcase. The condition of the Plexiglass slipcase is FINE- with very minor surface wear.

        Limestone (Limited First Edition)

Paris: Editions de La Martiniere, 2001. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine. This is a first edition, first printing of Koudelka\'s critically acclaimed photobook Limestone published by Editions de La Martiniere, Paris in 2001 with a limitation of 500 copies this being number 59. The British Journal of Photography stated, \"Koudelka is the most potent and powerful photographer alive today. His black-and-white photographs are so highly charged, so strong in their visual impact, and so haunted that they defy description\". Parr & Badger in \"The Photobook: A History\" commenting on Limestone wrote, \"This powerfully original photographer offers 36 evocative photogravures, the work of two years spent photographing limestone quarries in the United States and Europe. It is a large, handsome production, which features the photographer\'s panoramas presented in a long, continuous accordion fold . Here, Koudelka gives full reign to these tendencies to make brooding pictures that emphasize the quarrying of limestone not as rape, but as a noble and civilizing act.\" Jean-Pierre Berghmans in his introduction writes, \"Josef Koudelka has opened my eyes to the beauty of these landscapes. Nature is far stronger than any of us. His work is a moving account of nature\'s infinite capacity for asserting itself.\" Containing 36 spectacular black-and-white accordion fold panoramas printed in gravure on heavy coated stock that measure approximately 7.5 x 22.5 inches (each reproduction is the length of two folded pages), the book is bound in gray paper covered boards with gray endpapers and housed in a corrugated cardboard clamshell case that measures approximately 10 x 13 inches. The book is in FINE condition and the cardboard case is in FINE- condition with minimal wear. Cited in The Photobook: A History by Parr & Badger.

MYSTICISM: INITIATION AND DREAM. Deluxe Full Leather Edition

California: Three Hands Press [Xoanon]., 2012.. First Edition, First Printing. Full Leather. Fine. First Edition. Octavo, bound in full brown goat leather, gilt titles on spine panel, design in blind on upper cover. 56 pp. One of 111 hand-numbered copies. Issued as Three Hands Press Occult Monograph No. 1. A fine copy of a beautiful book. ¶ Written as an undergraduate at SOAS University of London in 2001, 'Mysticism: Initiation and Dream' would foreshadow the concerns of Andrew Chumbley's later doctoral research on the transcendental nature of the magical dream. In the course of the exposition, the concepts of the Initiatic Dream are traced to furthest antiquity, epitomized by the participatory nature of the Mystic within the Oneiric Realm. The axiomata of Dream Reification and Rarefaction are introduced as defining processes of this twilight pilgrimage, both of a gnostic and illuminative character. At the time of his matriculation, Chumbley had already established a solid reputation as an occult author and practitioner of widely varying spiritual disciplines. His highly-acclaimed books Azoëtia (1992) and Qutub (1995) arose not only from the solid foundation of magical practice and theory, but also from a highly complex mystical dream-praxis, perfected for many years. Though forming the core of his coursework, 'Mysticism' - together with the bulk of his SOAS essays - were written in a transcendent dialogist style altogether in concord with the body of his occult work. Drawing upon sources as diverse as the dream-vision of the Christian saints, Sufic oneiric texts, and Bonpo termas, Chumbley here presents an arcane cartography of the dream as the eternal vessel for the perichoresis of matter and spirit.

Reflections on New South Wales. Translated by Thomas Cullity

Sydney: Hordern House, 2001. Large quarto, 310 x 225 mm, xxxii + 670 pp., with a portrait, twenty maps and illustrations and eight colour plates; in mint condition in the original quarter vellum and glazed boards. De luxe edition, limited to twenty-eight copies. One of just twenty-eight copies of the special issue on large paper. The original publication sold out in a few days; this de luxe version was prepared in a large quarto format, in a specially commissioned binding by Newbold and Collins. It too sold out rapidly. Publishers sometimes create special issues of their books re-imposed on especially large paper with wide margins. For this special issue using the large proof sheets prepared for the work the bindery retained the largest possible margins, making the page format 310 x 225 mm (as against the standard edition at 245 x 177 mm). The colour plates remain at their actual printed page size, as was usually the case with such issues of colour-plate books in the nineteenth century. The binding is a traditional quarter binding using English vellum for the spine, which is lettered in gilt, and old green glazed linen from a vintage bolt of cloth in store for the sides. The vellum used was supplied by the English firm which still supplies vellum and parchment to the British Houses of Parliament for official documents. This, along with the regular issue, represents the only edition in English of Freycinet's comprehensive examination of early New South Wales, one of the most important historical texts to deal with Australian settlement, and especially with the city of Sydney. The original text appeared as chapters 29 to 40 of the 'Historique' section of Freycinet's Voyage autour du monde. It was the late Thomas Cullity, with the help of Katharine Pratt and Jen and Bernice Pasquier, who took on the formidable task of making this sometimes very complex text readily accessible to the English-speaking reader. Originally published in an edition limited to just 300 copies, this even more limited de luxe version appeared a little later. Reflections on New South Wales provides a unique insight into the first fifty years of the colony's development. 'We have tried to demonstrate how a vast country that only recently was wild and almost empty, had passed from its primitive barbaric state to that degree of brilliant prosperity that makes it today the wonder of Europe' wrote Freycinet, one of the most articulate and exacting explorers ever to visit colonial Australia. His two visits to the colony, in 1802 and 1819, afforded him a unique opportunity to examine in detail the first English settlers and their interaction with the indigenous people, the complexities of the first legal system established in New South Wales, the health and welfare establishments, and the first educational facilities. With a finely-tuned and cultivated eye he observed the towns and their buildings, and recorded in detail the social and literary development of the colonial city. Freycinet's text was compiled from direct observations, ideas or comments by Freycinet himself as well as by his travelling companions in the Uranie voyage - Quoy, the chief surgeon, the naturalist Gaimard, and the artists Arago and Pellion - and from information attributed to conversations and correspondence with the leading citizens in the colony - Lachlan and Elizabeth Macquarie, John Macarthur, and Judge Barron Field, to name just a few.

Sydney: Hordern House, 2001. Quarto, with a portrait, twenty maps and illustrations and eight colour plates; a fine copy in the original green cloth, paper label on front cover. The first publication in English of Freycinet's account of NSW. The only edition in English of Freycinet's comprehensive examination of early New South Wales, one of the most important historical texts to deal with Australian settlement, and especially with the city of Sydney. THE VOICES OF MARRAKESH A RECORD OF A VISIT

San Francisco: The Arion Press, 2001.. Quarto. Cloth and pictorial boards. Fine, in stiff paper folded sleeve with etched labels. First printing in this format. Translated from the German by J.A. Underwood. Illustrated with six full-page etchings by William T. Wiley, and reproductions of 29 photographs by Karl Bissinger, taken in 1949 while on assignment for FLAIR magazine. One of 350 numbered copies (of 376) designed by Andrew Hoyem, signed by the photographer and artist (in the margin of their final image in the book). "The Voices of Marrakesh became a classic of literary travel writing and redefined the genre. Canetti provides no historical overview of the city or the country. His description of places and things is vivid, yet economical to the point of minimalism. The events Canetti describes could have taken place 100 years ago or yesterday or tomorrow" - Publisher.
