A Hamady Wilde Sampler/ Salutations 1995

Mt. Horeb,WI: The Perishable Press. 2001. One of 95 signed, numbered copies, printed with hand set /reset Gill Sans type on various hand/mould made papers with a variety of hand-mixed colors. Page size: 11 x 7-7/16 inches; 124 page surfaces, 103 printed, plus tip-ins. Bound by Walter Hamady: hand-sewn in an "almost-not" binding fitted with a heavy wrapper printed with a much enlarged wiggly postal cancellation mark. Here is the long awaited ninth (9th) collaboration intermediated via a Neo-Dadaist and a Magic Realist. It appears to be a desultory chronicle with marginalia and excerpts lifted from a correspondence begun back in 1971. As a bibliographic document, it itemizes 1,159 letters to bring the reader through A.D. 2000, with heavier focus on the year 1995 for the amorphous reason of sequelization. The papers were varied to give strong page character. Includes affixations, scribblings, embossments and rubber stampings. Gill Sans is the typeface set in a varia of compositional theories with self-conscious comment by the typographer, designer and archivist. There are quite a few colors mixed ad hoc for the manual one-owner Vandercook proof press. Also there are quite a few hand-mades and mould-mades to give each page strong character. In addition, there are tip-ins, affixations, embossments and scribings seemingly caused by the untreated drinking water here in the country. The edition is 95 for obvious reasons, signed and numbered in an almost not binding. Ten gatherings hand-sewn on the big W.O. Hickok ledger frame and fitted with a folded wrapper printed with an enlarged, wiggly postal cancellation mark. Selected as one of "Fifty Books of the Year" 1996 AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Art, New York City). PP #127.

Chymista scepticus vel dubia et paradoxa chymico-physica, circa spagyricorum principa, vulgo dicta hypostatica, Prout proponi & propugnari solent à Turba Alchimistarum. Cui pars premittitur, alterius cujusdem dissertationis ad idem argumentum spectans.Rotterdam: A. Leers, 1662.

First Latin edition, one of two issues, each published one year after the first English edition (the other was published at London, no priority established), of this milestone in the history of chemistry. "His most important work [where he] set down his corpuscular theory of the constitution of matter, which finally freed chemistry from the restrictions of the Greek concept of the four elements, and was the forerunner of Dalton's atomic theory" (Sparrow). "Boyle's most celebrated book is his Sceptical Chymist ... It contains the germs of many ideas elaborated by Boyle in his later publications" (Partington II, p. 496). This Latin edition is the second edition overall; both issues are very rare: we have been unable to locate any copy of either issue in auction records. OCLC lists six copies of the Rotterdam issue and four of the London issue in the US. The first English edition, though not as rare as this Latin edition, commands a high price - the last complete copy at auction sold for $170,750 in 2001.

"The 'Sceptical Chymist' is one of the great books in the history of scientific thought, for it not only marks the transition from alchemy to modern chemistry but is a plea, couched in most modern terms, for the adoption of the experimental method. Boyle inveighed against the inaccurate terminology of the 'vulgar spagyrists' and the 'hermetick philosophers,' as he termed the alchemists who refused to define their terms ... He predicted that many more [elements] existed than had been described, but insisted that many substances, then thought to be elemental, were, in fact, chemical compounds. He set forth the modern distinction between a compound and a mixture, pointing out that a true chemical compound possessed properties entirely different from either of its constituents" (Fulton).

"The importance of Boyle's book must be sought in his combination of chemistry with physics. His corpuscular theory, and Newton's modification of it, gradually led chemists towards an atomic view of matter ... Boyle distinguished between mixtures and compounds and tried to understand the latter in terms of the simpler chemical entities from which they could be constructed. His argument was designed to lead chemists away from the pure empiricism of his predecessors and to stress the theoretical, experimental and mechanistic elements of chemical science. The Sceptical Chymist is concerned with the relations between chemical substances rather than with transmuting one metal into another or the manufacture of drugs. In this sense the book must be considered as one of the most significant milestones on the way to the chemical revolution of Lavoisier in the late eighteenth century" (PMM).

"Boyle has ben called the founder of modern chemistry, for three reasons: (1) he realized that chemistry is worthy of study for its own sake and not merely as an aid to medicine or alchemy - although he believed in the possibility of the latter; (2) he introduced a rigorous experimental method into chemistry; (3) he gave a clear definition of an element and showed by experiment that the four elements of Aristotle and the three principles of the alchemists (mercury, sulphur and salt) did not deserve to be called elements or principles at all, since none of them could be extracted from bodies" (Partington II, p. 495).

The Sceptical Chymist takes the form of a dialogue, clearly modeled on Galileo's Dialogo, involving four participants. The Aristotelian Themistius and the Paracelsian Philoponus state their positions briefly, but soon fall silent. A wide-ranging discussion ensues between the sceptical Carneades (Boyle himself) and Eleutherius, the open-minded enquirer. Carneades argues - citing many experimental examples - that the Aristotelian four-element system and the Paracelsian three-principle model give equally inadequate explanations of what happens when complex substances are attacked by fire, or by powerful solvents. He shows that these processes often generate new compounds, rather than the promised 'primitive and simple, or perfectly unmingled bodies', which remain stubbornly elusive. His second proposal is more speculative - and theologically more dangerous. Boyle believed, and hoped to prove in time, that the ultimate constituents of bodies were minute atoms, differing only in 'bulk, figure, texture and motion'. This idea was first suggested by the ancient Greek natural philosophers Leucippus and Democritus. Their successor, Epicurus, incorporated it into a godless materialistic world-view that was universally condemned by Christian theologians. Consequently, atomistic theories were suppressed for centuries. By the mid-17th century the works of the classical Greek atomists had been printed, translated and commented upon by scholars such as Pierre Gassendi, though there was still considerable hostility to them from clergy of all persuasions. But Boyle - a devout (though somewhat unorthodox) Christian who funded translations of the Gospels into many languages, including Gaelic and Turkish - saw no reason why a benign deity could not have chosen to create an atomic universe.

Dibner, Heralds 39; Grolier/Horblit 14; Norman 299; Partington II, pp. 495-8; PMM 141; Sparrow, Milestones 27 (all for the first edition in English). Gypsy Moth (Carol's Story)

North Bay, Canada:: Transformer Press,, 2001.. Edition of 10. 6.375 x 8.75"; 10 pages. Set in Humana Serif and printed on an Epson Stylus Photo RX600 printer. Canal paper (peat moss and mustard flax) made by Papeterie St-Armand. Bound in green leafy cloth with green ribbon ties at both spine and foredges so it can become a two-dimensional carousel structure. Netting covers some openings; others have insect-like bodies hanging it them. Paper title on front cover. That misfortune is often underserved and beyond our control is no surprising revelation. When the situation is compounded by supposed experts who are supposed to help, it becomes even more infuriation. This is a story of triumph over such misfortune and attendant human folly and foibles. "Gypsy Moth" is a complex story — a true story — told simply. Carol was the unwitting victim of insecticide spraying. Her health suddenly took a nosedive. Doctors were wrong, pessimistic, and dismissive. She lost her job. Nevertheless, with the help of family, friends, nature, and her own spirit, she recovered.

[Manuscript Archive]: How Crime is Killing America: A Complete Guide to Causes and Cures

[2001]. Computer generated manuscripts totaling more than 3400pp. Four manuscripts, representing two versions of the text for an unpublished book, plus a comb bound excerpt of the first chapter, a computer printed mock-up for a proposed but unpublished magazine cover and its accompanying editorial. All near fine with a few creases and tiny tears at the edges of some pages. The unpublished manuscript is written by Nathaniel Gilbert, a Connecticut journalist, editor, and public relations professional who has contributed articles to Entrepreneur and Public Relations News. We suspect that the book, a detailed analysis of modern American crime, was being seriously considered for publication in the spring and summer of 2001 before its publication was derailed by the September 11 terrorist attacks which shifted public interest away from domestic concerns such as crime. No surprise the author's subsequently published book Democracide considers the damage the war on terror has caused on several domestic issues, most notably crime prevention. Two manuscripts are free of annotations while the other two are covered with edits, we presume by the author but suspect some may be from an editor. Laid in are two letters from literary agents dated in the spring and summer of 2001 referencing the book. The cover mock-up and editorial appears to be an aborted magazine effort by Gilbert that segued into this book.An extensively researched but unrealized book that captured the state of crime in American at the dawn of the new millennium before the war on terror refocused our collective attention.Manuscripts:• 892pp. With annotation and correction throughout, in pencil on front wrap; "Y2K Edition 164,450 Words plus Notes."• 892pp. With TLS, dated May 21, 2000, from a literary agent retuning this draft and asking for the latest version.• 730pp. With annotation and correction throughout. 2001. BASKIN, Leonard. Oresteia. By Aeschylus. Translated by Ted Hughes. Three volumes. [6], 102; [6], 68; [6], 61, [3] pp. Illustrated with 47 full-page woodcuts by Baskin. Folio, bound by Claudia Cohen in half black morocco, red decorated paper over boards, red leather title labels on spines, laid into grey cloth box with black leather title labels on red paper. Northampton: The Gehenna Press, 2001. |~||~||~||~| Limited to 60 copies. This monumental book is the final work of the sculptor, painter and illustrator Leonard Baskin, completed within days of his death in June 2000. The 47 woodcuts are powerful evocations of Baskin's unique vision of the human psychological predicament. One can imagine few better texts for Baskin to illustrate than the tragedies of Aeschylus. This work also represents the final collaboration between two life-long friends, Leonard Baskin and the Poet Laureate of England, Ted Hughes. Hughes supplied a new free verse translation of Aeschylus' Agamemnon, Choephori and The Eumenides, the three plays comprising the Oresteia. The book was conceived, laid-out and illustrated by Baskin. The volumes were set in Bruce Rogers' Centaur and Arrighi types and printed on Italian handmade paper by Arthur Larsen and Dan Keleher in Hadley, Massachusetts. The colophon is signed by Baskin's widow Lisa Unger Baskin and by Ted Hughes' widow Carol Hughes. As new.

Original Science Fiction Art for The Marquis / Devil's Reign / Hell's Courtesan #2 (II of II) (Guy Davis) / (2): study and final With Burton-signed Copy of the Issue

2001 Original sepia montone paintings - 2 of them, the study and the final version, which are indeed difficult to tell apart - by the late noted science fiction / fantasy illustrator David W. Burton, who passed away on December 8th of 2011. Both executions are 9" x 12", Fine. Signed and dated, though in a different place on each of the study and the final. There are several other differences of note. Annotations on reverse in each case. Burton's painting is of Guy Davis' offbeat comic book hero, The Marquis, and was the painted study for the pin-up in the back of the 2002 issue, The Marquis / Devil's Reign / Hell's Courtesan #2 II of II (Oni Press, Ltd., 2002) - and is appreciated, and depicted, front and center on Guy Davis' The Marquis webpage . A copy of this issue is included, flat signed by David Burton at his pin-up page and in as new condition as far as my comic-grading experience can tell. See scans (note that the paintings are slightly larger than my scanner). Unframed. Among Burton's other work are his "The World of Barsoom" (hailed by both Danton Burroughs - Edgar Rice Burrough's grandson - and Al Williamson as the best graphic expression of the Barsoomian stories in many years); Mike Hoffman's "Lost Worlds of Science Fiction and Fantasy", #3; "Gladiator", a Phillip Wylie sci-fi novel; an illustration for Robert E. Howard's story, "Almuric", done for Robert E. Howard, Two Gun Raconteur; #8 ; "A Princess of Mars" for the ERBMania site; Love's Golden Embrace (a Charlene Leonard novel); and three Paul O. Williams Pelbar Cycle novels, those being The Breaking of Northwall, The Ends of the Circle, and The Dome in the Forest. l-art

        The Handmade Papers of Japan

2001. TINDALE, Thomas. The Handmade Papers of Japan. Four volumes, either stitch-bound Japanese style or contained in a folding Chitsu case with ivory clasps; plus envelope of Fibers. Folio, 342 x 280 mm, housed in the original publisher's folding box with ivory clasps. Rutland, Vermont: Tuttle, 1952. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition, a superb copy of the classic work on Japanese papermaking, now very rare. Although 250 copies of this book were planned, as few as 150 actually may have been produced. According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, "The Handmade Papers of Japan is one of the finest studies on Japanese paper; it is replete with specimens, including old and rare papers from the eighth and ninth centuries." Volume I, "The Handmade Papers of Japan," provides the history and description of Japanese papermaking and is accompanied by an envelope containing five different papermaking fibers. Volume II, "Seki Collection," contains 187 specimens from the Nara period (710-93) to the present day. Volume III, "Contemporary Collection," presents 139 full-page specimens and descriptions of modern papers from twenty districts of Japan. Volume IV, "Watermarks," includes twenty pictorial light-and-shade watermarked papers. "The Handmade Papers of Japan" is bound in a Japanese-style binding with hand-stenciled book covers and folding box. The author, an American, was employed as an advisor to the Japanese Civil Service immediately after the end of World War II. In the compilation of the present volumes he was assisted by Yoshikuni Seki, the celebrated Japanese papermaking scholar. Together they worked with the major Japanese papermakers to create the most comprehensive book ever published on Japan's celebrated papermakers and papermaking villages. The foreword was written by Dard Hunter, the world's foremost expert on handmade papers. The book traces the history of paper making in Japan, listing the various papermaking villages, their handmade paper makers, methods, and the materials used. The work contains actual samples of ancient Japanese papers, as well as a collection of 20 especially executed watermarked papers. The eight endpaper stencil illustrations showing the process of hand-made paper making and book covers were all designed and made especially for this book by Keisuke Serizawa, the widely acclaimed Japanese Folk-art artist. This work is considered by many the finest all-around book on paper scholarship. See: Sidney E. Berger's biographical note on Tindale in: The Handmade Papers of Japan: A Biographical Sketch of its Author and an Account of the Genesis and Production of the Book (Bird and Bull Press, 2001).
