Jacob van Ruisdael: A Complete Catalogue of His Paintings, Drawings, and Etchings.

New Haven: Yale University Press, 2001. Forest green cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering on spine. Dust jacket is glossy and illustrated in color with Ruisdael's painting "Waterfall in a Hilly Wooded Landscape" on the front, and "Panorama of Amsterdam, Its Harbore, and the IJ" on the back, black lettering on the front and white lettering on the spine. Color-illustrated hardshell slip case. 788 pp. 950 BW illustrations and 250 in full color. Shipping weight is 12 pounds. Jacob van Ruisdael is the preeminent Dutch landscape painter of the seventeenth century, renowned for the wealth of closely observed naturalistic detail in his works. This beautiful book, written by one of the most distinguished scholars of Dutch art, is a catalogue raisonné of Ruisdael's landscapes: almost 700 paintings, more than 130 drawings, and 13 rare etchings. Seymour Slive demonstrates the totality of the artist's vision in all three media, offering comprehensive and perceptive entries on all catalogued works. He also presents and discusses paintings and drawings that have been wrongly attributed to Ruisdael or whose status is uncertain. In addition, Slive provides a documented chronology of Ruisdael's life based on a fresh examination of published and unpublished archival material; a chronological list of his dated works in all media; a topographical index; and concordances. In two appendices, Slive reviews the proposal that Ruisdael had a second profession as a medical doctor and discusses the copies John Constable made of Ruisdael's landscapes during the course of his lifelong passion for the master. The combination of text and lavish reproductions makes this volume both a major work of scholarship and a vivid testimony to Ruisdael's ongoing legacy. -Yale University Press. VG/VG/VG- Book is in great condition with tight binding, previous owner's name in ink inside, dj is lightly faded along spine, slip case has a small tear at bottom.

        Ten illuminated miniatures.

[Italy, end of the nineteenth century]. - Superb examples of the late-nineteenth-century medieval revival and specimens of the trade in painted miniatures imitating (innocently or not) the manuscript painting of the Middle Ages. These miniatures can been attributed to Ernesto Sprega, restorer of the Raphael frescoes in the Vatican, or another facsimilist in his circle (cf. Manuscript Illumination in the Modern Age, ed. S. Hindman et al., 2001, pp. 120-22). The borders and the frames of the miniatures are bravura imitations of ornate Italian models of the late fifteenth- or early sixteenth-century, perhaps even recalling the lavish and gaudy borders strewn with gold and brightly-coloured, fleshy foliage produced by Liberale da Verona (c. 1445-1530).Whether these are pastiches or forgeries intended to deceive unwary buyers is a question for discussion. Certainly there are numerous examples of similar creations (notably by the Spanish Forger) sold in Europe to foreign (usually American) buyers in search of authentic medieval manuscript cuttings, and it is interesting that the artist here has offset the miniatures to one side of the leaf, leaving a blank space (approximately 10mm. wide) on one vertical edge, giving the impression to the casual observer that these are singletons, taken from a book, while in fact the vellum shows no signs of having ever been bound into a volume. The subjects of the miniatures:Leaf 1: recto, Christ entering Jerusalem on a donkey; verso, Christ seated in a hilly landscape surrounded by children, one of whom sits on his lap, and another holds a lamb.Leaf 2: recto, Christ surrounded by the Apostles in a wooded landscape; verso, Christ before his followers accepting a golden ring from a richly dressed Jew and a young man (some rubbing to young man's face on verso and scratch through corner of miniature).Leaf 3: recto, The Scourging of Christ (some minor paint flaking to base of miniature); verso, St. Paul cutting off Malchus' ear in the Garden of Gethsemane.Leaf 4: recto, Christ before followers exposing his wound to Thomas; verso, the Descent from the Cross (small scratch to latter).Leaf 5: recto, bearded man with followers kneels as God appears as a bearded face in upper left-hand corner of miniature; verso, the same man standing before a medieval town gate surrounded by townspeople. 10 illuminated miniatures on 5 vellum leaves (each leaf c. 145 × 108 mm), illuminated recto and verso in penwork, colours and liquid gold. In contemporary double-sided blue and gilt glazed frames (mounts renewed). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage

Toronto, Canada: McClelland & Stewart(2001). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 323 pages. Rare Alice Munro collectible set. A fine copy of "Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage" with a rare copy of The New Yorker Magazine Millennial December 27, 1999/January 3, 2000 Issue. The former is signed by Alice Munro. One of Alice Munro's greatest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the American Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Alice Munro's "Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage". Her tenth collection of short stories. Nine luminous pieces in which "men and women are subtly revealed. Personal histories, both complex and simple, unfold in rich detail of circumstance and feeling" (Publisher's blurb). The final story, "The Bear Came Over The Mountain", first appeared in The New Yorker Magazine Millennial Holiday Issue, was subsequently turned into a very fine film (entitled "Away From Her") by Sarah Polley. To celebrate Alice Munro's Nobel Prize win, it was published by The New Yorker in its entirety again (it's a novella-length story, taking up a third of the Issue, an unmistakable sign of The New Yorker's commitment to Munro in particular and its great writer-contributors in general) for its October 21, 2013 Issue. "A stunningly precise writer who is often able to say more in 30 pages than an ordinary novelist is capable of in 300. Munro writes about what are usually called ordinary people, but her intelligence, compassion, and astonishing power of perception enable her to give their lives a remarkable dignity, indeed redemption, since she shows how much of The Extraordinary can fit into that jam-packed emptiness called The Ordinary" (Nobel Prize Citation). An absolute "must-have" set for Alice Munro collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Alice Munro. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. It comes with a rare, near-fine copy of The New Yorker Magazine Millennial Holiday Issue, in which the collection's "summing-up" story, "The Bear Came Over The Mountain", originally appeared. Throughout her long career, Munro made very few public appearances, and is a reluctant signer at best. As such, most of her books are signed on a bookplate, which are much less desirable than copies signed on either the title page or tipped-in page. This title is a classic. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Most copies available online are subsequent printings or have serious flaws. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2013. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ALICE MUNRO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0771065256.

Dave Martin: American Photography Of The Male Nude, 1940-1970, Volume 3 (with "jim Warren 1953" Original Print)

Berlin, Germany: Janssen Publishers(2001). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 150 pages. Rare Dave Martin collectible set. A pristine copy of "Dave Martin: American Photography of the Male Nude, 1940-1970" First Edition/First Printing with original vintage photographic print of "Jim Warren 1953", titled, dated, and signed by Dave Martin. The book is the third volume in the now-legendary Janssen Publishers Series. Both the book and the print are now rare. An austerely elegant production by Janssen: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial softcovers with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Dave Martin. He has contributed a literate and concise essay, "A Brief History of The Male Nude In The USA", which appears as an Afterword in this book only. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper in Berlin, Germany to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents "Dave Martin". The pioneering work of a great photographer of the male nude. Dave Martin was active for three decades, between the 1950's and 1970's. By common consensus, his best work was done during his first decade, when he set up shop in San Francisco and somehow persuaded the athletes at nearby Stanford University to pose au naturel for him. Today, Stanford owns the single largest collection of Dave Martin's work (about 2600 prints in all), a proud and important part of its Permanent Photography Collection. The All-American look that remains pervasive to this day (and enjoys universal status as the emblem of male beauty and desirability) is due in large part to the efforts of pioneers like Lon of New York. Deeply influenced by the latter, Dave Martin sought to capture this look from the more casual, relaxed, and informal West Coast perspective, a brilliant counterpoint to Lon's Classically-inspired nudes, which capture the cosmopolitan East Coast and its Old World, European charm. That he would photograph the cream of the crop, Stanford University athletes, remains one of the major coups in the history of male nude photography. "Jim Warren 1953": Original vintage photographic print by Dave Martin, who produced his own prints, a practice that most contemporary photographers now largely consign to highly specialized print developers. The print measures 10 X 8 inches. Shows what is probably Dave Martin's single most handsome discovery, the Stanford athlete Jim Warren. Encased in its own protective plastic sheet. Jim Warren appears in the book, and is one of Dave Martin's most avidly collected models. He anticipates by more than thirty years the All-American supermodels of Bruce Weber, Herb Ritts, and Greg Gorman. An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, set for Dave Martin collectors. This copy of "Dave Martin: American Photography of The Male Nude" comes with an original vintage photographic print of "Jim Warren 1953", which is very prominently and beautifully titled, dated, and signed in pencil on verso by Dave Martin. Jim Warren is his real name, and he was an athlete at Stanford University. His portrait is one of the most beautiful male nudes we have ever seen. As far as we know, this is the only set available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauties. Please note: The print is eminently suitable for framing. Copies available online of the book command between $500 and $1000. This set is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare set thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white plates, 1 original vintage photographic print. One of the finest American photographers of the male nude of the 20th century. A fine collectible set.         South African Botanical Art: Peeling back the petals (Collector's edition of 100 numbered copies, this is copy no. 1 presented to 'The Publisher' by the author)

Vlaeberg, South Africa: Fernwood Press, 2001. Limited edition.. A fine (new) copy.. Pp. (1, limitation), (5), 6-216; color frontispiece of Cyrtanthus flammosus, 131 color plates of fine botanical art. One half dark green textured morocco leather, spine with five raised bands, lettered in gilt in one compartment and with a gilt leave in another, over gray cloth boards with central gilt flower, endpapers with central embossed leaf design, in gray cloth-covered slipcase bordered in dark green morocco at the head and foot of the slipcase, 4to (300 x 230mm). The limitations page reads: Collectors' Edition. A special edition limited to 100 copies. This volume is number 1 presented to Fernwood Press (Pty) Ltd signed by the author, Marion Arnold. She comments: 'Remarkable images of plants created by the most talented of botanical artists, are housed in store rooms of botanical institutes and museums. Yet the oil paintings, etchings and watercolors of 'fine' artists - depicting the same plants - are located in art galleries. Why are plant portraits classified differently, and kept apart? Is plant imagery to do with science, or with art? Do the two 'kinds' of art ever meet? This unique and ground-breaking book metaphorically 'peels back the petals' to explore southern African plant portraiture and discovers the meanings ascribed to the genres of 'botanical art' and 'flower painting'. Well known for their botanical and art history contributions, authors Marion Arnold, Peter Goldblatt, John Manning, John Rourke and Dee Snijman examine plant portraiture in southern Africa over several centuries. They provide engrossing and sometimes unique revelations on a broad spectrum of issues, including species 'discovery', insect pollination, biological classification, specimen collection, plant naming, portraiture, and the manner and style of artistic representation. The texts are liberally illustrated by works of some of the countless travelers, botanists an artists who have so passionately and meticulously recorded South Africa's rich floral heritage.'

The Geometry Of Innocence: The Limited Slipcased Edition

Ostfildern-ruit, Germany: Hatje Cantz Publishers(2001). First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 128 pages. Collection of photographs. One of the most important art photography books of our time. Limited Slipcased Edition of 50 copies. Precedes, is superior to, and should not be confused with the regular trade edition. They have the same ISBN. The Limited Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Ken Schles: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with black titles embossed on the spine, as issued. Photographs and Manifesto/Essay by Ken Schles. The title comes from the lyrics of Bob Dylan's "Tombstone Blues". Text fragments by Franz Kafka, Ralph Ellison, Walter Lippmann, and Italo Calvino. Original 8 X 10 inch photographic print matted, framed, and laid into its own black cloth folder. Matching black cloth slipcase. Printed on thick, glossy stock paper in Germany to the highest standards. Presents Ken Schles' "The Geometry of Innocence". His ambitious second collection. There is something disturbing and uncompromising about each image, by itself and in the context of the collection's relentlessness. Schles' point is that we should not be distracted but instead be completely immersed. If "Invisible City" is almost claustrophobically inward-looking, "The Geometry of Innocence" looks outward, at the larger world, and sees both good and bad, cause for hope, and reason for despair. Schles also has a didactic purpose, articulated in his Manifesto/Essay, which is "must-reading" for anyone uncritically enamored of photography (this includes many serious photographers and critics). While his essay is critical about photography, Schles is obviously not against photography. Indeed, the latter stance would be self-defeating because even the most subversive, "anti-photographic" photograph can be easily coopted by the system to reinforce unjust social structures and feed an insatiable and corrupt mass culture. Instead, he is for a photography that somehow retains its subversive power and empowers people given the fact that "we are formed by a flawed society. Yet, however boldly or tenuously we engage our lives, we love, we hate, we struggle" (Ken Schles). An absolute "must-have" title for Ken Schles collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Slipcased Edition, indicated as such on the Back Copyright Page. It comes with an 8 X 10 inch original photographic print that is very prominently and beautifully numbered, titled, and signed in pencil on verso by the photographer: "Ken Schles The End of the World From The Geometry of Innocence 43/50". This title is a contemporary art photography classic. As far as we know, this is one of only two copies of the Limited Edition still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Please note: The other copy apparently has a major publisher's creasing flaw that is not at all present in this copy. A rare signed copy thus. 106 color, 87 duotone plates, 1 original print. One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER KEN SCHLES TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3775710116.

        Austerlitz. [Signed Copy]

Hamish Hamilton,, London: 2001 - [iv], 415pp, illustrated with photographs. Extremely fresh copy, unread and never opened beyond the prelims, signed by Sebald to the title page. In the original maroon cloth-textured binding, spine titled in gilt, bright, corners sharp, head of spine faintly blunted. In the protected unclipped pictorial dust jacket, clean and crisp: just forward of its upper joint, there is a vertical indentation (as if someone had idly run their thumbnail down it): this is visible in the photo of the jacketed book; a few edges are very slightly blunted, and there is a small pucker to the head of the lower joint. Included, should you want it, is the Waterstones 'Signed by the author' band: this has a couple of tiny scuffs to the edges. A superb copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
