Text volume 14 pages, signed by both Author and Artist. Text in German. Etchings unbound, signed and numbered by Artist. Caroline Saltzwedel, born in England, has lived in Hamburg since 1995 as a graphic artist and painter. She studied German at the Universities of Durham, Oxford and Bonn, and printed graphics at the Ruskin School of Fine Art, Oxford. In 1998 she founded the Hirundo Press for artists' books in small editions; her works are in numerous public and private collections including the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, the British Library, the Bodleian Library, Stanford University, and the Widener Library (Harvard) among many others. Caroline's works are often paired with original, new works of poetry or are based on mythological figures - this work, Daidalos, allows you to trace the path of Daedalus and Icarus on their legendary flight from Crete to Sicily. For this edition, Caroline has presented seven three-colour etchings and one small etching. The seven larger etchings are single sheets printed on Rives 'Moulin du Gue'. The smaller etching, also three-colour, is loosely laid into the front of the text volume. All etchings are signed, titled and numbered XIII/XX in pencil by Caroline. ***DESCRIPTION: This work is comprised of, first, the poems by Keven Perryman, in German, softbound and hand-sewn, with an original woodcut on the wrapper; loosely laid in at the front is the small (image approximately 4" by 6" on paper approximately 8" by 11.5") etching guarded by tissue; folio size (text pages approximately 12.5" tall), unpaginated with 8 leaves, text Van Dijck Antiqua, both Author and Artist have signed the Colophon page, the book is numbered "XIII"; the book fits into a pocket mounted onto the left-hand side of the box. The second component of this work are seven full-page, stunning, three-colour etchings by the Artist, introduced by a single leaf, folded once, which serves as title and Colophon pages to the etchings; the Colophon page and each of the seven etchings are numbered "XIII/XX" and signed by the Artist, each etching is also titled by her, all in pencil. The images are approximately 7.5" by 9.75" on Moulin de Gue paper that is approximately 11.25" by 15", and are loosely laid into the right-hand side of the box. Of the softbound book itself, 160 copies were produced; of this deluxe version, with the etchings and laid into a dark blue linen-bound case, only 20 copies were produced. ***CONDITION: All components are fine, as new; all paper is clean and crisp, the colours on the images deep and true, the box without fault. ***PROVENANCE: We acquired this work directly from Caroline herself during Codex 2017 held in Richmond, California. ***POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply, please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Engravings. Piraeus & Ports of the Mediterranean Sea.

[Athens, Eurodimention L.T.D.] for Hellenic Republic Ministry of Mercantile Marine, [2000]. Large folio, original bronze colour hot-stamped folder, pp. [16, English text with illustrations], [12, Greek text with illustrations], 84 colour-printed or tinted views and maps on 55 loose plates; folder with a few repaired tears; otherwise fine; preserved in a custom-made cloth drop-back box with morocco lettering-piece on spine. An extremely rare publication celebrating the Greek shipping industry, depicting Piraeus and other ports around the Mediterranean, which have been Greek trading posts for the last 2500 years. Apart from the eponymous port depicted on some 15 plates there are views of Kerkyra, Patras, Galaxidi, Crete, Thessaloniki, Sinope, the Black Sea, La Valetta, Venice, Gibraltar, Tangiers etc, in short all the relevant places connected by Greek trade. We assume the rarity of this item is due to this being a private publication for people involved in the shipping industry, with very few copies deposited at Greek libraries.

        Away WITH: Prospectus

Granary Books 2000 - Printed by master printer Ruth Lingen. Her copy, letter "D," from a total edition of 52. Signed on the colophon by the author and illustrator. Of his collaboration with Robert Kushner, poet and playwright Ed Friedman said, "Bob read Away a lot. Fairly early on, he decided that it didn't make sense to illustrate the text. He kept telling me that he liked how 'slippery' the writing was. I think what he meant was that individual pieces have the feeling of narrative—a center or location with points of interest—but the specifics shift around and fly off in many different directions. Illustration, even if possible, would tend to lock down meanings that were better left transient. What Bob has done is create a number of images which correspond to some of Away's recurring imagery. Stars, water, foliage, etc. are printed around and beneath the text in varying combinations and in different colors. With the writing, the printed images create a coherent and shifting visual milieu." Kushner is a painter noted for founding the "Pattern and Decoration" movement; for the prose poems in Away, he contributed delicate line drawings and textured washes of color, beautifully rendered by master printer Ruth Lingen. When will the book be done, pp.84-85Book designed and letterpress printed, including the cloth covers, by Ruth Lingen; cloth over boards bound dos rapporté by Judith Ivry. Edition of 50 copies signed by Friedman and Kushner, of which 17 were hors commerce and 35 were for sale. 53p. 25.2cm x 29.6cm. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Archive]: Kerista Commune

San Francisco 2000 - A collection of 62 pamphlets, journals, periodicals, and other related ephemera from the Kerista Commune produced between 1976 and 2006. All items are about fine with only modest age toning to the tabloid periodicals as typically found. The Kerista Commune was a long-lived utopian polyfidelity commune that operated in the San Francisco Bay Area. The inspiration for the commune was first envisioned by John P. "Jud" Presmont in New York in the late 1950s but not realized until 1971 in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood with help from "Even" Eve Furchgott and growing to approximately 30 regular members by the end of the decade. The group's defining ideal was polyfidelity, a practice in which members married into families of up to 18 (evenly split between men and women) and exchanged sexual partners on a rotating basis. These closed units were polyamorous only within their marriage unit, hence the "-fidelity." The group worshiped (in a tongue-in-cheek way) the goddess Kerista, an Afro-wearing Earth Mother often pictured in its publications. Among contemporary personalities they later came close to worshiping Joan Jett, referring to her as their "Matron Saint." She was said to represent all that is hedonistically wholesome in life, and a model of "non-manhating feminism and empowerment."The material in this collection presents the ideals and philosophy of the community through handbooks and periodicals as well as brochures and pamphlets. In an issue of Utopia 2, Even Eve, said, "if you had to sum up what we're trying to do in one sentence, you could say that we want to make the world safe for rock n' roll." Discussed throughout are ways to make better decisions, raise children, and deal with mental health issues, with paranoia a subject that comes up frequently. In two different pieces the "88 Basic Standards" of the commune are spelled out which include: "social tolerance," "keeping it together at parties," "colorful, Earthy, explicit language is OK," and "no one can insult me without my own consent," among others. The later writings of Brother Jud attempt to recruit new members to his waning experiment through a series of handouts that read like a master class in unintelligible lingo writing. The group held open parties and actively distributed leaflets and newsletters as a way to raise awareness of its alternative social and sexual ideals throughout the Bay Area. The commune became well-known in the area attracting attention with an article in Psychology Today, and appearances on The Phil Donahue Show, and 20/20. Members used numerous names for their projects, such as the Egalitarian Futurist's Alliance, Purple Submarine, The Storefront University, Kerista Philanthropic Collective Settlement, Kerista Consciousness Church, and Performing Arts Social Society (which succeeded at the unlikely feat of getting the Small Business Administration to sponsor a series of small business seminars organized by a sex commune). The commune was fast to grasp the importance of technology and among its business endeavors was a highly successful Macintosh computer distributorship, Abacus, Inc., that grossed upward of $25 million a year. They often referred to themselves as a "business driven peace corps." The company was created as a way of raising funds for the commune, and the Node and RockHead newspapers in this archive include much about this effort. A flyer by Brother Jud, included here, issued just after the commune's breakup, attributes the dissolution to greed inspired by the commercial success of this venture. Even Eve told a different story in an issue of Community Journal: "Bottom line, some of us decided it was time to make Jud answerable to the same standards everyone else was expected to live by - and play as an equal. Given that demand, he decided to leave . first his polyfidelitous family, then the commune as a whole." After the spilt Brother Jud went on to create The World Academy of Keristan Education, the entity behind much of the pos

L. Bd. V, S. 50) fügt er in lateinischer Sprache hinzu. - Insgesamt gut erhalten. Partiell wenige Fleckchen.

(WEINBERGER, KARLHEINZ). Weinberg, Karlheinz, Thomas Meyer & Martin Jaggi. Pietro Mattioli & Ulrich Binder, Editors. KARLHEINZ WEINBERGER: PHOTOS 1954-1995. Zurich, SWITZERLAND: Museum fur Gestaltung, Zurich, Andreas Zust Verlag & Scalo, 2000. First Edition. 4to. Pictorial Boards. Photography Monograph. Near Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. 232pp, profusely illustratied in b&w and color. Text in German and English. Designed by Hanna Kohler. With a biography, exhibition history and bibliography. "For decades the work of Swiss photographer Karlheinz Weinberger was shrouded in obscurity. In the 1950s he published numerous homoerotic photographs under the pseudonym "Jim" in Der Kreis (The Circle) - the legendary international gay magazine that featured highly sophisticated photographs by, among others, George Platt Lynes and Herbert List. Weinberger was one of the first queer photographers to show his often working-class models posing in their everyday surroundings. For Weinberger, eroticism was always grounded in the quotidian - a revolutionary and courageous approach back in the period. In the late fifties Weinberger started to develop an obsessive interest in the nascent biker culture and its proud and self-confident celebration of the body, embarking on a longtime study of their lifestyle. In many ways, Weinberger's photographs will remind viewers of Kenneth Anger's cult classic "Scorpio Rising". Weinberger's photographs are a unique document both of pre-Stonewall gay culture and postwar youth culture and its cycles. His erotic and provocative photographs are imbued with a mischievous sense of humor that makes them as vibrant and vital today as they were when they were first taken". This substantive hardboound catalogue published in conjunction with a 2000 retrospective held at Zurich's Museum fur Gestaltung remains the most comprehensive survey of Karlheinz Weinberger's eroticized documentation of post-war, transgressive youth culture in Northern Europe. A most handsome example of this uncommin item showing a very sight bump to the lower foredge corner of the textblock.
