The original of this outstanding work, which is in the library of Topkapi Palace Museum in Istanbul, contains 137 brilliantly-colored miniatures by Levni, the renown painter to the court of Ahmed III (r 1703-1740). The miniatures illustrate a fifteen-day festival held on the occasion of the circumcision of four of the Sultan's sons in 1720. Surname is in the long-standing Ottoman tradition of preparing specially-written and illustrated books to commemorate the festivities that took place on special occasions such as royal births, weddings, and so on. The activities included parades, musical performances, circus acts, and fireworks displays, all of which were brilliantly captured and executed by Levni in his miniatures. The text for the book was composed by Vehbi, a court poet, and appears in full in this facsimile edition. State-of-the-art reproduction and printing techniques have been employed to ensure that this facsimile edition is a faithful copy of this distinguished work. Hand bound by a master binder limited edition of 1500 copies. A second volume accompanies the facsimile edition, and consists of introductory essays by historians Dogan Kuban and Stéphane Yerasimos. Lover Beloved (From the Masnovi) Translated by Zahra Partovi with Etchings by T. Kurahara

New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Company. 2000. Signed limited edition, one of 50 copies, all on Apta Verge Royal paper by Richard de Bas, hand-numbered and signed in pencil by the artist, T. Kurahara and the translator, Zahra Partovi. Page size: 9-1/2 inches x 6- 1/2 inches; 27pp; + colophon, with four separate suites of etchings by T. Kurahara, each measuring 9-1/2 inches x 38 inches when unfolded (6 folded leaves). Each of the four suites is on paper etched on the reverse - one in gold, one in deep brown, one in lighter brown, and one in brick. These are laid into the bottom of the custom-made blue cloth clamshell box each of the inner trays lined with color-field etch in gold with brick line on brown and reddish-brown with brick line on red. The clamshell box is lettered in palladium gilt on the spine with the title. The book is bound in blue cloth by Zahra Partovi. The binding is a long stitch technique using only one piece of thread - a periwinkle blue, visible on the spine in five different lengths on top and bottom with title stamped in palladium gilt on front panel. There are four original etchings in the bound book as well as the suite. Again, these are color field etchings and the artists has interpreted this part of the MASNOVI by the times of day at which the tale is set: early morning, mid-day, dusk and evening with corresponding colors - moving from light pink to inky blue-lavenders. The text has been printed letterpress by Daniel Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress in Aldus by Hermann Zapf in black and in light gray for the Persian calligraphy by Zahra Partovi (from polymer plates). The two color printing is a masterpiece in itself with the moving English translation by Ms. Partovi above and below each line of Persian in gray of Ms. Partovi's Persian calligraphy. The title page is printed in red and black with the blue thread exposed and knotted in the gutter of the title page. Jerry Kelly has accomplished the calligraphy on the title page. The etchings were editioned at D2 Press by the artist. The moving text cannot be summarized but must be experienced - preferably in the profoundly beautiful setting of this book. It is an aesthetic experience to savor.

        La Peste

Paris: Gallimard. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine/Fine. FIRST EDITION, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY CAMUS; one of 2000 copies of Alfa Navarre. Dubarle was a prominent critic who wrote several studies of Camus's work. "When The Plague was first published in 1947, the majority of French critics greeted it as an allegorical presentation, not only of la condition humaine in general, but also of the particular experience of the German occupation... Yet it would be an extremely limiting interpretation to see in The Plague only the description of a single historical experience. The struggle against plague and occupation are part of a wider struggle, not only against the physical evil inherent in the world, but also against the evil which men, by their blindness and indifference as well as by their cruelty, do to one another" (Philip Thody). La Peste, Camus's second novel, is perhaps his most effective demonstration of two of the central themes of his work, namely personal morality and the "man in revolt". Paris: Gallimard, 1947. Octavo, original wrappers; glassine; custom box. Book slightly cocked with a little bit of toning to spine; pages a little toned (as usual). An extremely well-preserved copy in original wrappers. Rare inscribed.

        ABECEDA [Alphabet]

Prague: J. Otto. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS, one of 2000 copies printed, of one of the most important and influential books of European modernism. Illustrated with 25 black and white photomontages. "The 1926 book Alphabet (Abeceda) is a landmark achievement in European modernism. Its frequent reproduction in exhibition catalogues and scholarly articles has made it a key symbol of Devetsil (1920-ca. 1931), the Czech artists' collective within whose ranks the book was conceived, and its importance is increasingly measured in international terms as well. The book consists of a series of rhymed quatrains by Devetsil poet Vitezslav Nezval, titled and ordered according to the letters of the Latin alphabet. Facing each set of verses is a Constructivist photomontage layout by Karel Teige, a painter turned typographer who was also Devetsil's spokesperson and leading theorist. Teige developed his graphic design around photographs of dancer and choreographer Milada (Milca) Mayerova, a recent affiliate of the group, who had performed a stage version of "Alphabet" to accompany a recitation of the poem at a theatrical evening in Nezval's honor in April 1926... The project to create a new alphabet epitomizes the proselytizing attitude of avant-gardists in various fields in the years after World War I. From Dada poetry to Constructivist architecture and design, from calls to overhaul theater to revolutions in literary theory, a panoply of experiments took the alphabet as their model or target and disclosed the potency of this elementary linguistic structure as a trope for creative renewal and social revolution. With its large print, childlike verses, and an instructional sequence that matches a single letter in text and image on every page spread, Alphabet presents itself as the class reader for that internationally sponsored course in universal reeducation." (Matthew S. Witkovsky, "Staging language: Milca Mayerova and the Czech book Alphabet"). "An important landmark of the Czech Avant-Garde and ... one of the first conceptual artists' books"; an "important book which attempted to challenge both conventional artistic hierarchies and class distinctions with an art that could be equally embraced by a professor or a street cleaner" (The Photobook). ABECEDA [Alphabet]. Design by Karel Teige. Photographs by Karel Paspa. Prague: J. Otto, 1926. Quarto (298 x 232mm), original printed wrappers. Wrappers lightly soiled, minute archival repairs at head and tail of spine. An exceptionally good copy, particularly rare in this condition.

The 1971 Lustrum Press first edition is cited on page 260 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I", pages 272-73 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", page 25 of "From Fair to Fine: 20th Century Photography Books That Matter", and pages 208-09 of "The Book of 101 Books". (PARKE, TRENT) (AUTIO, NARELLE). Drewe, Robert. THE SEVENTH WAVE (PHOTOGRAPHS OF AUSTRALIAN BEACHES). Kirribilli, AUSTRALIA: Hot Chilli Press, 2000. First Edition. Oblong 4to. Pictorial Self Wrappers. Photography Monograph. Near Fine. 128pp, profusely illustrated in duotone. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "The Seventh Wave" is Trent Parke and Narelle Autio's striking collaborative portrait of their fellow native Australians' collective beach consciousness at the fin de siecle. The husband and wife photographers each specialize in underwater work, and the grainy yet beautifully reproduced black and white images here emanate as much from beneath the waves as from the sand. Their subjects teem at the water's edge and amidst the breakers in a near- weightless ballet that seeks freedom amidst the claustrophobia of a national pastime. Arion uses the letterpress equipment of the famed Grabhorn Press, type cast and composed on the premises, and an in-house book bindery--in conjunction with 21st century digital technology--to produce works crafted in the finest tradition of the private press movement. In the illuminated version we are offering here, this vast, handsomely produced work of scripture is among a handful of the most impressive and notable private press books to be issued in recent decades. Created by Arion Press founder and publisher Andrew Hoyem and his crew of eight craftsmen, and printed and bound by hand at the press' San Francisco workshop, this may be the last Bible to be printed by letterpress from metal type. Hoyem, who apprenticed at the Grabhorn Press, founded Arion in 1974 to continue the tradition of fine private press printing, and his output of 88 works has included a number of highlights, such as the 1979 folio edition of Melville's "Moby Dick" illustrated with 100 woodcuts by Barry Moser and the 2002 printing of "Paradise Lost" with accompanying portfolio of illustrations by William Blake. In 1989, he acquired Mackenzie & Harris, the oldest and largest surviving metal type foundry in the United States, and this division of Arion produced the 16-point Romulus type used in our Bible, a face described in the prospectus as characterized by "graceful lines and clarity of character recognition." The red initial letters at the beginning of each book of the Bible were created by noted Adobe font designer Sumner Stone, and our copy is one of the specials in which the letters were embellished with abstract geometrical designs resembling panes in a stained glass window, all colored by hand and illuminated with burnished gold by Arion artists. In preparing this opus, Hoyem studied three of the great folio Bibles: the 1532 Latin Bible of Robert Estienne, John Baskerville's English Bible of 1763, and the Oxford Lectern Bible, designed by Bruce Rogers and published in 1935. Arion's is the only fine press lectern bible to be produced since the Rogers work, and it carries a great tradition of grand printed Bibles as well as fine typography and bookmaking into the 21st century.

Faksimile - Buch der Welt . Die sächsische Weltchronik. Faksimile und Kommentarband ( 2 Bde.).

4°, (31 x 22,5 cm) 330 originalgetreu faks. Seitenm 500 farb. Miniaturen., Faksimile: Ganzleder- Rindslederbd. m. 2 Messingschliessen. Kommentarband in OHLdr. Mit beiliegendem Wegweiserheft (30 S.)., Tadell. VERGRIFFEN! Exempl. 23 von 980 arab. Num. Exemplaren.
