A scientific analysis of the deadly wreck of the Yukon River Steamer Florence S. in Alaska

Fine content Autograph Manuscript Signed "James. P Kimball," four pages, 8.25" x 12.5", titled "Wreck of the Florence S." Offered together with a letterpress copy of the same manuscript. Some toning, marginal wear and minor tears. Kimball authors his own account of the ship's capsizing in the Yukon River in July 1900 that resulted in the deaths of three passengers. Kimball who was in Alaska at the time working on a survey, offers an analysis of the disaster from an engineering standpoint: "Total destruction was wrought in an instant but too sharp a turn in an 8-mile current with a boat so loaded down that her guards were half under water. Crates of furniture on the hurricane [sic] deck doubtless added to her instability, which was obvious to all the passengers. A few moments of listing first to one side - then to the other - gave the last warning of her instability. With a final and decisive list to the starboard followed by a lurch, the cargo was spilled and the boat capsized. The top-hamper, which was without hog-frame, was torn completely from the iron hull, and more than half submerged, port side up. The hull, hanging on one guard along the port side for a moment or two, filled and grounded, the upper works then being wrenched apart with a second convulsion that threatened to engulf everything. Thus liberated, however, they swept down stream at the full speed of the current with the starboard side of the deck house hinging to the rest and spreading out partially submerged. When the Steamboat went over one of the crew dove into the river and swam ashore, looking out for himself alone, though a powerful swimmer. He was quickly followed by the engineer who swam ashore with the cabin boy. Another lad, the steward, was also pitched overboard and immediately drowned. Two women, mother and daughter, leaped overboard, following two men by whom they were held up for a while Ã?" Kimball's manuscript is accompanied by clippings of newspaper articles describing the wreck, the arrest of Captain Sydney Barrington who was charged with manslaughter. (Kimball described Barrington in his mansucript as "a Canadian pilot making his first trip") Surprisingly the court acquitted Barrington. However, Kimball maintained his contention that the wreck was due to "mishandling at the wheelÃ?" James Kimball (1836 - 1913) was born in Salem Massachusetts. He first studied at Harvard and subsequently at several institutions in Germany including the Georg-August-Universitâ?°t in GË?ttingen. He became a professor of Chemistry and Economic Geology at Cornell in he 1850s. His work was interrupted by the Civil War, where he served on the staff of Gen. Irvin McDowell and was present at Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Toward the end of the war, he left the army to work private mining engineer in New York, taking the position of President of the Everett Iron Company. After some time working for the United States Geological survey, he served as Director of the United States Mint from 1885 to 1889. Following his work at the mint, he continued as a private consulting geologist to western mining and railroad interests.

A Dialogue With Solitude [SIGNED AND NUMBERED, WITH ORIGINAL PRINT ALSO SIGNED AND NUMBERED BY THE AUTHOR]

Lumiere Press, Toronto 2000 - 1/100. Folio. Unpaginated. Original photo-illustrated dust-jacket over grey cloth with black lettering on spine. Photographic title page signed and numbered by Dave Heath. Book housed in publisher's clamshell box with title label pasted on spine. Box containing an original dust-grained photogravure also signed and numbered by Dave Heath, and printed on Lana Gravure Paper. The original print is encased in its own maroon paper portfolio with silver titles on the cover. "Originally published in 1965, "A Dialogue with Solitude" has long been out-of-print and highly sought-after by collectors. In 1961, Dave Heath assembled the photographs that he had been making throughout the fifties into a poetic sequence. The original plan for a book, as he envisioned it, would be a large format, akin to LIFE magazine. When the book was eventually published, in 1965, it was reduced in size. Nevertheless, "A Dialogue With Solitude" was a landmark in photography - it quickly went out-of-print and for the last thirty years has been highly sought by collectors. The new Lumiere Press edition is the rebirth of a classic. Using the maquette from 1961, and the set of master prints, the book has been restored to the format of Heath's original design. The 82 images were printed in Berlin in the Novatone(r) process - an exceptional offset technique that preserved the photographs' brilliant tonal scale. The binding cloth and endpapers duplicate the original binding. In every way this book is the fulfillment of the artist's creative aspirations. To mark the new edition, a thoughtful perspective was provided in a brief contribution by Robert Frank." (From the publisher). One of 100 numbered copies signed by Dave Heath, of which this is No. 58. Custom slipcase and mylar. Slipcase and mylar in very good, clamshell box, dust-jacket, binding, interior, folio, and original print in fine condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Strange Case of the Composer and His Judge

Bloomsbury, 2010. 1st. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed by Author. Fine in Fine unread DW. SIGNED to title page. Synopsis: It was New Year's Day, 2000. Hunters on their way home through a forest in the Jura stumble upon a half-circle of dead bodies lying in the freshly fallen snow. A nearby holiday chalet contains the debris of a seemingly ordinary Christmas: champagne, decorations, presents for the dead children. The hunters are questioned and sent away. As they descend the mountain, a large dark car rises past them in the gloom. The woman within barely acknowledges their presence. The Judge, Dominique Carpentier, is in charge of the investigation. Commissaire Andre Schweigen is waiting for her. They have encountered this suicide sect before. In the chalet they find a strange leather-bound book, written in mysterious code, containing maps of the stars. The book of the Faith leads them to the Composer, Friedrich Grosz, who is connected to every one of the dead. Surely he must be implicated in the Faith? And so the pursuit begins. Carpentier, Schweigen and the Judge's idiosyncratic assistant Gaelle, are drawn into a world of complex family ties, ancient cosmic beliefs and seductive, disturbing music. Carpentier, known as the sect hunter, prides herself on her ability to expose frauds and charlatans. She also likes to win. Has she met her match in the Composer? Hurtling breathlessly through the vineyards of Southern France to the gabled houses of Lubeck, through cathedrals, opera houses, museums and the cobbled streets of an Alpine village, this ferocious new novel from the acclaimed author of "Hallucinating Foucault" is a metaphysical mystery of astonishing verve and power.
