Les Prélivres

Montolivet: Éditions de la Fontaine-aux-Loups, 2000. Small folio case containing twelve 12mo. books. One of 555 copies. A special twentieth-anniversary edition of the clever “pre-books” that Munari designed for children before they learn to read. The publishers explain that “In 20 years, the materials and techniques have obviously developed and changed. We have decided, therefore, for this new edition to favour the spirit of the artist rather than make slavish copies.” A pocket inside the front flap of the folio contains “Book 0,” with directions for use in English and French, and Munari’s explanation of his concept. The twelve “prélivres” are housed in individual wooden compartments. The folio is made of stiff corrugated blue paper, embossed on the front with the title and publication information. An elastic cord holds the folio closed. A fine, beautifully-designed new edition of this innovative set.

'' ************ [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Oulu, Finland: Kaleva Kustannus Oy/Esko Mannikko, 2000. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Oulu, Finland: Kaleva Kustannus Oy/Esko Mannikko, 2000. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 144 pages. Retrospective collection of color photographs. One of the greatest photography books of our time. The true First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Esko Mannikko and Petri Kuokka: Oversize-volume format in oblong shape. Maroon leatherette pictorial hard boards with photographic reproduction pasted on the cover and pale gray titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Esko Mannikko. Printed on thick uncoated stock paper in Finland to the very highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Esko Mannikko's austerely yet breathtakingly beautiful photographs of his native Finland, a dying rural Finland kept defiantly alive by Esko Mannikko's artistry. Mannikko's lifelong subject, the decline of rural Finland, that is to say, the decline of agrarian life, is off-putting, even depressing, something people say they do not want in their lives, as if it were ugly or toxic (an accusation that the American writer Annie Proulx had to endure as well). This is ironic because Mannikko's work breathes whereas most contemporary art and photography are lifeless exercises in Mannerist cleverness. Mannikko is a Classicist, a rarity in our shallow "post-modern" art world. It is important to be reminded that in a world saturated and choking with derivative images from glossy magazines, he is the real thing: A great artist. His impeccable compositional sense and formalist use of color as well as his aesthetic rigor and faultless eye are not just "world-class"; they set Mannikko apart from other living photographers, and make him an artist in a class of his own. An absolute "must-have" title for Esko Mannikko collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Esko Mannikko. This title is now highly collectible. This is one of very few signed copies of the First Edition/First Printing still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Copies of the true first (and even subsequent editions) available online command up to $800. A rare signed copy thus. 108 color plates. Esko Mannikko's "Naarashauki: The Female Pike" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest living photographers. A flawless collectible copy. He has been rediscovered within the last decade. Among a number of other shows illustrating his role in creating "Taisho chic", there was a wonderful retrospective on his lifetime of work hung at the Tokyo Museum of Modern Art in 2000. This large and lovely work reveals his debt to tradition. With a presentation letter from him to a professor acquaintance, Hiruma Masamichi, dated New Year's day, Sho^wa 40 (1965), the year Hisui died. A note on the box indicates this scroll was hung at the influential Issuikai annual exhibit. Impeccable condition in a scroll box and outer slipcase.

Included are three working samples of pages created by Ms. Moore to complement Corey Mesler's poems. The edition consisted of 176 numbered and lettered copies, each signed by the artist and poet: 100 copies in Hanemuhle Bugra paper wrappers, 50 copies in quarter-bound Japanese cloth over board with hand-coloring by the artist, Suzanne Moore, and 26 deluxe lettered copies, hand colored by Suzanne Moore and gilded, as well as a few Artist's Proof copies (this copy). The spine is smooth with the title stamped in gold gilt in a designed pattern using the letters in the title, red and black headbands, brown endpapers, signed in blind on the inside back join by Donald Glaister. The leather and pastepaper copy of the book, together with one of the 100 copies of the edition, as well as the original lettering studies in paper folio are housed together in an elaborate full red morocco clamshell box with rounded spine, the title is a repeat - only larger - of the design on the spine of the book, red box decorated with rounded fillet in silver and grey on edge of front panel, onlays of a hand-colored letterpress print by Ms. Moore covered with Mylar in broken pattern forming rectangular band at foredge, box signed in blind by Donald Glaister with his signature gold dot and dated 2011. This elaborate and beautiful morocco box is housed in a red cloth clamshell box with printed paper label, title, author, and press in black, and hand-painted design by Suzanne Moore.& The book contains 12 poems by Corey Mesler and paragrams created by Suzanne Moore to complement each of Corey Mesler's poems. Ms. Moore explains that working with a key concept from each poem, she invented letter-based designs that extend the feeling and content of each poem to where the line between visual and verbal begins to blur. Her work melds, weaves, and plays with visual and verbal messages in her lettering and painting. It is printed, engraved, and for these copies, hand colored in vivid tones with silver and gold gilt. The text was set in Monotype Fairbank Italic at the foundry of Michael and Winifred Bixler and printed letterpress by Terry Chouinard, who designed this beautiful book with Suzanne Moore. A wonderful assemblage - showing the artist working through a project.
See an Image.
