Autograph Letter Signed, 2 pp on one 8vo sheet of "The Century Association" stationery, New York City, Feb. 9, 1966

He writes to Leon Edel, Henry James biographer. "May I intrude upon your scholarship if it extends to Henry James senior. I want to use a quotation which F. O. Matthiessen gives partially on p. 13 of 'The James Family' and I have no idea where to find it. Matthiessen writes, 'probably James best-known remark is that "to a right-minded man" a crowded horse-car is "the nearest approach to heaven upon earth"...." Evans explains he seeks the exact quotation noting that, "F. O. M. does not give a hint of his source...knowing your erudition I do hope you may have in mind...do not take down any books yourself for my quest. I'll do that..." He signs in full, "Walker Evans." Evans found the actual quote and used it in his photographic portraits of New York City riders titled, "Many Are Called." The correct quote reads: "To a right-minded man, a crowded Cambridge horse car is the nearest approach to heaven upon earth." [Walker Evans, "A Penitent Spy," Rathbone, 2000]

Oldmixon received considerable help from residents of the colonies: in this first edition there is much relating to Pennsylvania, apparently derived from personal communication with William Penn, which was deleted from the later editions. Provenance: Stickers from Dr. Winslow Lewis (1799-1875) of Boston, a representative to the General Court and an Overseer of Harvard. A very good set, boards rubbed with one small split; small stickers on each front cover and front paste down, browning to corners; Vol. I has damp marking to upper part of title and first few leaves of introduction; Vol. II worming to corners of free front endpapers and first blank, faint damp marking along top edge, tear to one map through blank area, a few minor nicks to edges of a two other maps.

        Angels & Demons

New York: Pocket Books. F/F. 2000. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. 0671027352 . Stated 1st hardcover printing with full number line, printed in May, 2000. This book meets all 5 first edition/1st printing points, it has no remainder mark, and it is a review copy with the 'coming May 2000 Simon & Schuster/Pocket Books' advertising cardboard tag laid in. SIGNED by the author on the title page. The book is fine: straight, very clean including its page edges, tightly bound, and it has no previous owner marks. It does have tiny crush-marks to the upper spine hinge ends and the rest of the upper spine edge cloth is a tad less stiff because of them. To be 'really' picky, when the book was put together, an extremely narrow (varies from 1/16" to about 1/8" wide) 1-3/4" length of paper was not glued down flat to the underlying board at the middle of the lower portion of the front pastedown. There's nothing wrong with the pastedown paper or the board; appears the glue just didn't get spread evenly enough. The dustjacket is also Fine - price intact, clean, crisp and unfaded with no damage. The first Robert Langdon mystery and the author's 2nd book. This time the Illuminatti is involved in a battle between science and religion. A much smaller printing than The Da Vinci Code as Dan Brown wasn't yet a well-known author - thus scarce signed 'and' without a remainder mark. Basis for the 2009 movie of the same name. ; 9-1/2" x 6-1/4"; 430 pages; Signed by Author .

A Dialogue With Solitude [SIGNED AND NUMBERED, WITH ORIGINAL PRINT ALSO SIGNED AND NUMBERED BY THE AUTHOR]

Lumiere Press, Toronto 2000 - 1/100. Folio. Unpaginated. Original photo-illustrated dust-jacket over grey cloth with black lettering on spine. Photographic title page signed and numbered by Dave Heath. Book housed in publisher's clamshell box with title label pasted on spine. Box containing an original dust-grained photogravure also signed and numbered by Dave Heath, and printed on Lana Gravure Paper. The original print is encased in its own maroon paper portfolio with silver titles on the cover. "Originally published in 1965, "A Dialogue with Solitude" has long been out-of-print and highly sought-after by collectors. In 1961, Dave Heath assembled the photographs that he had been making throughout the fifties into a poetic sequence. The original plan for a book, as he envisioned it, would be a large format, akin to LIFE magazine. When the book was eventually published, in 1965, it was reduced in size. Nevertheless, "A Dialogue With Solitude" was a landmark in photography - it quickly went out-of-print and for the last thirty years has been highly sought by collectors. The new Lumiere Press edition is the rebirth of a classic. Using the maquette from 1961, and the set of master prints, the book has been restored to the format of Heath's original design. The 82 images were printed in Berlin in the Novatone(r) process - an exceptional offset technique that preserved the photographs' brilliant tonal scale. The binding cloth and endpapers duplicate the original binding. In every way this book is the fulfillment of the artist's creative aspirations. To mark the new edition, a thoughtful perspective was provided in a brief contribution by Robert Frank." (From the publisher). One of 100 numbered copies signed by Dave Heath, of which this is No. 58. Custom slipcase and mylar. Slipcase and mylar in very good, clamshell box, dust-jacket, binding, interior, folio, and original print in fine condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Strange Case of the Composer and His Judge

Bloomsbury, 2010. 1st. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed by Author. Fine in Fine unread DW. SIGNED to title page. Synopsis: It was New Year's Day, 2000. Hunters on their way home through a forest in the Jura stumble upon a half-circle of dead bodies lying in the freshly fallen snow. A nearby holiday chalet contains the debris of a seemingly ordinary Christmas: champagne, decorations, presents for the dead children. The hunters are questioned and sent away. As they descend the mountain, a large dark car rises past them in the gloom. The woman within barely acknowledges their presence. The Judge, Dominique Carpentier, is in charge of the investigation. Commissaire Andre Schweigen is waiting for her. They have encountered this suicide sect before. In the chalet they find a strange leather-bound book, written in mysterious code, containing maps of the stars. The book of the Faith leads them to the Composer, Friedrich Grosz, who is connected to every one of the dead. Surely he must be implicated in the Faith? And so the pursuit begins. Carpentier, Schweigen and the Judge's idiosyncratic assistant Gaelle, are drawn into a world of complex family ties, ancient cosmic beliefs and seductive, disturbing music. Carpentier, known as the sect hunter, prides herself on her ability to expose frauds and charlatans. She also likes to win. Has she met her match in the Composer? Hurtling breathlessly through the vineyards of Southern France to the gabled houses of Lubeck, through cathedrals, opera houses, museums and the cobbled streets of an Alpine village, this ferocious new novel from the acclaimed author of "Hallucinating Foucault" is a metaphysical mystery of astonishing verve and power.

        Diary

Hamburg: Kruse Verlag, 2000 Hardcover SIGNED. First edition. Fine hardcover. BOOKS SHIP THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY, WRAPPED IN PADDING, IN A BOX. 112 pages; color reproductions throughout; 9.25 x 11.25 inches. SIGNED BY DAY on the colophon page at the rear and dated in the year of publication. Corinne Day, taking off from Nan Goldin, defined the 1990s photographic fashion aesthetic defined by natural settings, available light, little or no makeup, and young and seemingly unconcerned models. Her photos of a teenage Kate Moss for The Face set the tone and started the trend though her work in the same vein later brought her into conflict with the big fashion mags. The aesthetic quickly evolved into what became known as "heroin chic." This book presents her personal work over a number of years, unflinchingly looking at the lives of herself (including her run-up to surgery for a brain tumor and recovery thereafter) and her friends, some of whom would die of drug-related causes. She died in 2010. LAID IN is her obituary from the New York Times.
