Jimmy JOHNSON
Watertown, MA: Condition: The first three issues are stapled newsprint zines, saddle stitched; wrap around covers were used from issue number 4 on and full color, saddle stitched, wrap around covers on superior paper stock were used from issue 6 until the end of the run with number 18 - the final 146-page issue being perfect bound, all near fine. First Editions. Stapled quartos. Forced Exposure was an independent music magazine founded by Jimmy Johnson and Katie "The Kleening Lady" Goldman. It was printed on cheap newsprint with plain design and filled with corrosive, humorous writing. While there were articles and reviews of various counterculture figures in literature (Charles Bukowski, William S. Burroughs, Philip K. Dick) and film (Richard Kern, Nick Zedd), the primary focus was independent, punk, and obscure music. The list of contributors and interviewees reads like a who's who of underground music from the time: Steve Albini, Mission of Burma, Sonic Youth, Lydia Lunch, etc. The last issue of the magazine, #18, was released in 1993. 1993. Limited edition. All pages in mint condition. Cover shows slight wear (see close up) White remains one of our personal favorites, if not the favorite, because it was the most focused and, some say, the most elegant issue. The challenge: How do we print a publication using little to no ink? The solution: Artwork was either embossed, printed with varnish (our interpretation of "invisible" ink), or, as in the case of Ruben Toledo's illustrations, hand cut from tissue paper in a small village in China. We used braille on the cover and on many of the inside pages, leading the New York Times to call White "the magazine for touching." We liked to think of it as quite possibly the first fashion magazine for the blind. True to the all-white theme, Greg Foley's feather design for the cover was embossed rather than printed. It gave us great pleasure to walk by the Rizzoli Bookstore windows and see what appeared at a glance to be a wall of pure, blank books. [Attributes: First Edition]

Coelho, Paulo
Harper Collins, San Francisco, 1993. First edition in English of Coelho's classic work, which has been translated into over 70 languages. Octavo, original half cloth. Boldly signed by Paulo Coelho on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Michele Wetherbee. Translated by Alan R. Clarke. Paulo Coelho wrote The Alchemist in only two weeks in 1987. He explained he was able to write at this pace because the story was "already written in [his] soul." The book's main theme is about finding one's destiny. It tells the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain he journeys to the markets of Tangiers and across the Egyptian desert to a fateful encounter with the alchemist. The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories have done, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, above all, following our dreams. Every few decades a book is published that changes the lives of its readers forever. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

1993. Bill Brandt The Assemblages The Assemblages. Photographs by Bill Brandt. Preface by Adam Lowe. Kyoto Shoin, Kyoto, 1993. Unpaged. Folio. First edition. Stiff illustrated wrappers in photo-illustrated dust jacket. 31 full page color plus 26 b&w photographic plates. 10.25 x 14.25 inches. Text in English and Japanese. Uncommon. Better known as a documentarian, Bill Brandt was also a latent Surrealist (though a bit milder than Dali or Bunuel). "The three-dimensional assemblages which [he] made in the 1960s and 1970s continued his exploration of the borderland between the internal and the external. Although composed of fragments of reality - starfish, skulls, feathers, driftwood, bark, sea-weed, broken glass, bird wings, shells and rope - they are, paradoxically, the least naturalistic of all his work. The components are no longer simply what they were, but have been made unfamiliar by their arrangement: they have metamorphosed into the limbs and bones of fantastic animals, elements of bizarre dreamscapes, lines and shapes in Miro-esque patterns of hieroglyphics. Some, like the evil sprite created from a dried fish perched in a thicket of driftwood, are figurative. Others, such as the pattern of brittle-stars, have a striking formal beauty. Most resist explanation, though many suggest dream imagery." A gorgeous and very hard to find book! FitzGerald & Co., Vincent. Feingold, Michael.
New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Company, 1993. First Edition, one of 50 copies only, each signed and numbered by Feingold and Turner, all on Rives BFK paper. Page size: 10-7/8 x 8". Bound by Zahra Partovi: handmade paper with original etching over boards, printed on both sides, accordion style binding housed in a custom-made box by BookLab. The etchings, photogravures from noted photographer, Judith Turner's extraordinary photographs, were editioned by Peter Pettengill at Wingate Studio from plates by Jon Goodman. The text was printed by Dan Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress in Monotype Univers, with calligraphy by Jerry Kelly. Michael Feingold's Words are "songs" from the end of the world, where there are no more people, only empty landscapes. Alien visitors come to Earth and hear these "songs" without people in the barren landscape and try to understand what humans had done to themselves. This powerful and moving book has been nominated for the prestigious Brenden Gill Award given by the Municipal Arts Society of New York City. This is Mr. Feingold's first published book of poetry and as such is an important literary first edition in its own right. Fine.

FitzGerald & Co., Vincent. Turner, Judith.
New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Co., 1993. Portfolio of etchings, one of 25 copies, each signed and numbered by the artist Judith Turner on the reverse, all on BFK Rives paper and paper from Paul Wong, Dieu Donne Papermill. Page size: 30 inches by 15 inches; 6 leaves. Bound: loose in green paper portfolio with the title in silver gilt on front panel by BookLab. The titlepage printing was letterpress by Daniel Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress with calligraphy by Jerry Kelly. Marjorie Van Dyke and Vincent FitzGerald accomplished the printing of the etchings. Twenty-four photographic images by noted architectural photographer Judith Turner were selected by the artist and laid out in horizontally on five rectangular sheets of paper. They were photoetched and produced images with softer lines than photogravure. The artist has noted that this process helps conceal the deterioration of the sculptures. The etchings were printed with black ink and then using chine colle color was added by adhering thin sheets of colored tissue paper onto the heavier, larger sheets of paper. The effect is totally original and beautiful. The images float along the sheet of paper with the color calling attention to different aspects of these monumental pieces that are so essential to Western art.

[Sherwin Beach Press] Bogira, Steve; Mike Tappin, photographer
Chicago: Sherwin Beach Press, 1993. Hardcover. Number 54 of 200 copies. This powerful and poignant book, written in 1983, and first published in the Chicago Reader, is the story of people living, or trying to live, on General Assistance, a now-discontinued Illinois program that was the last resort of those who did not qualify for other more 'generous' forms of welfare. Each person developed a personal strategy to circumvent the system and get by on the state allotment of $144 a month. Many turned to Marillac House, a settlement house on the West Side of Chicago, for emergency food and clothing. Author Bogira does a remarkable job of getting his subjects to tell their own stories. The book also contains four portraits by photographer Mike Tappin. The pictures reinforce the sense of dignity felt in the subjects' words. Selected as one of 48 books exhibited in 'Dressing the Text' at the Art Museum of Santa Cruz County. Also selected as one of 44 books exhibited in the book design section of Felice Feliciano in Verona, Italy. Designed by Bob McCamant, hand set in Century Expanded by Jennifer Hughes and printed on Johannot paper by Jennifer Hughes and Martha Chiplis. The photographs were printed in duotone lithography by Rohner Printing of Chicago. Bound in grey soft cover paper wrappers. Signed by the designer. In fine condition. 24 pages, 12 1/2 x 9 1/4 inches. PRI/062615. Fine.
